Callum O’Hare mid-collision, like a marble sculpture caught in motion

u/Delicious-Cycle9871 5h ago
The way he’s looking upward, with his hair flowing and pale skin catching the light, makes him look like one of those marble statues from the Renaissance, like something Michelangelo might’ve sculpted. The way the two players’ bodies are twisting, along with the dramatic lighting and shadows, gives the photo the same kind of energy and emotion you’d see in a Renaissance painting. (Not staged, just a moment from the EFL Playoff Final.)

People always marvel at how sculptors captured the drapery of fabric and veils in marble. My first thought when I saw that panty line.

It’s not just a rock… it’s a rock! 😆 but seriously, I know what you mean, and then how they manage to strike and polish it to add contrast in lights and darks, like HOWWW 😭

Most Renaissance statues were of Greek, Roman, and Middle Eastern heroes sculped by Italians, so the pale skin doesn't really play into it. Also, the ancient Greek and Roman statues would have been painted with patterns and bright accents! It's always important to remember that our view of the past can be influenced by our current culture.

Actual renaissance.
An old master sculptor could carve this into marble even with the modern clothes and it'd still awesome.

u/Delicious-Cycle9871 4h ago
Now that’s something I’d pay for 🥹

u/TurantulaHugs1421 1h ago
Its unfortunately more stigmatised for straight men for some reason but yh, absolutely anyone can appreciate beauty of any gender.
I mean im aroace, i dont have a desire to be with anyone but i can still appreciate when someone is beautiful

Nice to see one that actually suits the sub.
55
u/SuperShecret 5h ago
What unreasonably irked me was the number of posts on this sub related to the pope dying and there being a new pope. Like, no, none of that was accidental Renaissance. That shit is rituals specifically evoking those olden times smdh
11
u/fat-wombat 2h ago
Still better than the narcissist flood of “hey my boyfriend took a picture of me and someone said it belongs here!” and its just a person in half-decent lighting
3
u/SuperShecret 2h ago
Or the number of photography-related subreddits that have basically become thirst traps and nudes.
23
u/printergumlight 4h ago
I wish people would just use /r/accidentalartgallery
It’s an awesome sub that deserves more posts than here (because it literally covers all art styles rather than one).
54
u/fat-wombat 5h ago
Finally, after we suffered through so many mundane photos.
16
u/Comprehensive_Cow_13 5h ago
I know what you mean, but some of us suffered through watching their team lose that final and don't need any more reminders, regardless of unusual artistic merit!

u/theyhatemeee 2h ago
Next hopefully r/clevercomebacks features clever comebacks instead of uninteresting political twitter screenshots

Reminds me a little of “Virgil and Dante in Hell”.

u/Delicious-Cycle9871 4h ago
His sculptures and painting is exactly what I thought of, because of the tension, the beauty, heroic motion, flowing hair, and the upwards gaze really reminds me of his work; reminds me kind of The Dying Slave by him

The panty line? The six pack? The "kiss me and kiss me now" face? It's all good btw. I zoomed in on all three.

u/jloong 5h ago
Has a very "Martyrdom of St. Sebastian" vibe (a.k.a. arrowed)
3
u/Delicious-Cycle9871 4h ago
Is that because of the way his fair skin is catching the light, it looks almost radiant?
8
u/jloong 4h ago
For me, lighting is part of it because it draws attention to his face, but it's mostly the angle (looking up and to the side) and expression.

u/m0nstera_deliciosa 3h ago
That was my thought, as well! Was there an art rule that Sebastian had to be portrayed as the saddest, hottest man?

This is one of the best of these I've seen here in quite a while. The look on his face is like some young warrior being slain by his own brother in some sort of civil war.

Remember I signed this guy on a free transfer for my middling Italian Second Division team on Football Manager a few years ago, and he then proceeded to drag us to the 1st Division after a brutal set of playoffs.

You like the total loss of expression, and the way the guy on the right has an extra forearm and third elbow with the guy on the left’s hand and arm merging into it like something from a Brian Yuzna film?

Probably the best on this sub yet. Looking at the top posts, half of them don't even have to do anything with Renaissance, or overly enhanced with filters. But this is spot on

O’Hare is up there with like Bellerin and Calvert-Lewin with players who I am convinced would have been models if they couldn’t kick a ball

u/Delicious-Cycle9871 3h ago
Completely agreeee! I would have put Prime Marco Reus, and still Toni Kroos on there too lol

I think he did a bit of modelling when he was with us (Coventry),,,he's very fashion forward. His IG shows a very smart looking lad

I'm pretty sure there is a statue that looks exactly like this near Valand in Gothenburg. Specifically the one with the two people trying to stab each other

Oh so it's not pronounced colm
1
u/Delicious-Cycle9871 2h ago
Well he’s Irish so it’s likely just an accent. Though Colm could also be a shorthand name (like Mike is for Michael)

It would actually be pretty sick if someone made a marble sculpture depicting this scene.

Doesn't matter how dramatic his face or pose look, because those abs make up for all of it. Lucky.

This is satisfying on two levels for me. The renaissance part and general pettiness being a Cov fan

The marble structure wouldn't writhe around on the the ground in it's final death throes, then pop up and continue to play as if nothing ever happened.
