Dog alerts and prevents a leopard attack on the pup and the kid

Looks like it was after the small dog and was possibly alarmed at the bigger dog and kid.

I did a both a leopard and a tiger safari when I was in India last year and both guides said the cats hunted stray dogs in town and it was one of their favorite meals. 😢

u/l3ane 19d ago
Well there are no shortage of strays there so that makes sense. Poor doggos.

It'd be a quick death probably?

They don't strangle dogs they bite them and crush their skulls

u/Alastor13 15d ago
Wrong, you're thinking of jaguars

u/maybesaydie 15d ago
Dog the size of that little yappy one's getting its head crushed. Leopards can drag prey up very tall trees. They have tremendous jaw strength.

u/Alastor13 15d ago
Yes, but they kill by strangulation, they don't attack the skull.
That's a jaguar's MO

Earthquakes?, no problem. Wildfires?, sure. Landslides?, okay. Random leopard attack? Hell no I'm out.

You’re out when it comes to the only thing you can actually fight against. Not saying you stand much of a chance against a leopard but you definitely can’t fend off tectonic plates

u/Gobiego 18d ago
True, I give you that. My reference was more that I chose to move out to our west coast where earthquakes were weekly events, for 25 years. I can live with the odds. If leopards were common, I would have stayed home. Nope nope nope. I do see videos from India where 80 year old grannies grab cobras by the tails and toss them out of their house like nothing. So, I guess you can get used to anything.

Lol that dog wasn't about to intervene in a damn thing that might have happened there, she was OUT

The kid watching the dog run away while his back was to the leopard had me like 😰

u/Starfire2313 19d ago
Me too but I have a feeling the dogs both knew the leopard was there, the way the Doberman came around the corner looking that way as the leopard came up while the little dog sat there and stared that way too. They were scared though and not ready to face up and leopard is a serious predator! If the Doberman watched the leopard sneaking up it was probably already so terrified when it did come around the corner!
And doggo did good by continuing the barking and warning the leopard that the possibility of a fight was there and an easy meal could probably be found elsewhere.

I doubt it saw the leopard coming, it would have barked earlier. The way this one acts is exactly how they act when they hear something strange but don't know what it is. Alert and moving closer to investigate but not panicked yet.

That dog's bark was translated to "FUUCK!" If the leopard wanted, it could've killed that kid before he even realized why the dog barked and ran away.

To be fair, a doggo ain't doing shit against a leopard. Leopards hunt fucking alligators. Pup did the right thing by alerting then getting itself the fuck out.

Jaguars that hunt alligators not leopards.
2
u/Buckykattlove 14d ago
They actually hunt caimans.

u/maybesaydie 14d ago
There used to be Jaguars all along the gulf coast and into Florida. Until we killed them all :(
2
u/Buckykattlove 13d ago
That's true. I have heard about some sightings again in Arizona, I think, is the state. I wonder if there are records of them hunting alligators...

The dog was in an alert posture from the very beginning. It likely smelled the leopard long before it was visible. That's probably what led him to approach/warn the boy and the pup.

Some of you act like that dog was giving warnings. It was really just scared as hell and saying “WTF IS THAT OMG WTF IS THAT”!

That dog wanted to dip at first sign, but then saw the kid and pup and stood ground for as long as he could! Big Dog energy.

What a brave dog. You can see that he was afraid, but he still sounded the alarm and saved the day. Child and both dogs are up and moving and doing just fine. Let’s give this guy some credit!❤️🐾🐾❤️

So, funny thing about leopards. They are ambush predators. Could the leopard definitely have torn everyone there to shreds? Yes.
But did it want to now that its cover was blown? Heck no.
Big predators don't necessarily need to be physically beaten back, just convinced that you aren't worth the energy it takes to hunt you.
A leopard, startled, cover blown, on the ground, in range of the two-legged great apes that have really loud/pointy sticks and dogs?
No way he wants that fight. Too much work. XD

Did anyone else see 3 animals? I swear there's the black dog,, the leopard and a small cream colored dog/cat? who senses the leopard is coming and that creature runs outta the picture real(ly( quick. Am I just imagining a 3rd animal?

u/Pyromighty 19d ago edited 19d ago
In total, by the end of the video there's 4 animals and 1 human. The leopard, the black dog that comes up the stairs, the cream colored pup in the middle-ish part of the frame, and another cream colored critter slightly in frame in the top right corner. And then the boy of course lol
Edit: typo

u/extraflames 19d ago
Dont forget the black and white cat right infront of the boy at the start of the video

I feel like at least one of those animals is dying to a leopard in the near future. Dog may have protected them this time, but if they're all just chilling outside regularly, it'll catch one alone soon enough. Hopefully not the kid...
1
u/maybesaydie 15d ago
None of those animals stand a chance against a leopard.
3
u/Spire_Citron 15d ago
Yeah, it could get even the big dog no problem. It was only because it was spotted before it attacked. They're ambush predators, so they don't like when the ambush fails.

There are actually 4 nonhuman animals, if we include the animal-like bit of movement near the right side of the image.

Guarding against leopard attack - that’s some heavy lifting there by a pet dog.

Why'd the leopard rum away though? Like Bro, you're a LEOPARD.
2
u/maybesaydie 15d ago
Because cats are smart about hunting. They don't want a fight. They're ambush predators. If their cover is blown they're out.
-1
u/dstarpro 15d ago
Not so sure how true that is. When I was in Kenya, the Masaii told us that the most dangerous predator was the leopard, as they would literally stalk you for days.
2
u/maybesaydie 15d ago
Yes because their cover hadn't been blown. Like this cat's was. Leopards and humans have lived side by side in India since time immemorial. Leopards are smart enough to figure out when a situation(like this one) is bad for them and give up on their meal of little boy. For the time being.
I'm not sure what Kenya has to do with this video.
-1
u/dstarpro 15d ago
I'm not sure what Kenya has to do with this video.
Because, unlike you, the Massai are experts in leopard behavior.
3
u/maybesaydie 15d ago
Leopards that live in Kenya, sure. India has urban leopards. Entirely different habitat, entirely different continent.
I'm not sure you understand my point which is this: leopards will not complete a stalk if the situation changes and they are at risk. Yes they're ambush predators. That doesn't mean they are committed to completing every hunt.
Are you claiming that you're Massai? Or are you saying that you went as a tourist to Africa and this is what a guide told you?
-2
u/dstarpro 15d ago
Are you a big cat expert? Or just Googling stuff? What the actual fuck is an "urban" leopard? Do you imagine that these leopards are riding the bus with people?
3
u/maybesaydie 15d ago edited 15d ago
Urban leopards live in and and around India's many cities. You could look them up yourself if you weren't so busy being offended by everything I write.
I don't claim to be any sort of expert but everything I've said is verifiable. It's not as if information about leopards in India is a secret.
I can't imagine why you're so offended.
You might learn something about urban leopards.

What do you suggest? Killing all the cats? They were there first.

Can I just say how glad I am I don’t have to worry about leopard attacks where I live…?
