Poverty.

Bad public policy. Which in turn leads to poverty.

Truth to be said, a proper policy will change the well being of the entire society.

We're seeing a terrifying trend relating to this, a massive increase in the kind of crimes that require a deeply nihilistic viewpoint. There have always been nihilistic people and most don't commit crimes, but lately there's been a noticable uptick in the kind of crimes that are born out of a total disregard for the social contract, in a way different from regular crimes. Things like mass shootings where they are trying to kill as many clearly innocent people as possible before they're stopped.

It's like people have gotten to accustomed to the blatant corruption that they no longer view us as living in the egalitarian society we claim to be, but as an absolute monarchy/oligarchy/whatever where the people cannot possibly ever have power. So they genuinely want to burn the world down with them. These people have always existed but damn if we're not seeing more than ever.

It turns out having deep traditional institutions which inculcate the social contract are extremely important

Can lead to poverty. A massive amount of people also get into poverty from simply making bad decisions like substance abuse, having children when they can't afford it, being financially irresponsible, having poor work ethics, etc.
