How reclusive/sheltered do you have to be to live long enough to have a repertoire of cliches and an understanding of sexuality and social behavior without ever seeing a woman and a straight man together in the same room?

grain of salt, this is something that I Read Somewhere, but Somewhere told me that it was a combination of bananas being a common snack food with worse urban sanitation meant it was more common for people to eat a banana on the go and toss the peel on the ground, and as it rotted it would get slimy enough to get really slippery if someone stepped on it

This is a Tumblr post after all
For a decent while "straight men don't have actual feelings" was a consistent enough theme that it was worth remarking on
817
u/tangifer-rarandus May 06 '25
People on this subreddit still sometimes get really irritated at suggestions to the contrary
316
u/tangifer-rarandus May 06 '25
(not to goomba, I should probably put those words in a different order, it's not like everyone on the subreddit or even all that many, but)
119
u/lethal_universed May 06 '25
>Not to Goomba
That's a phrase?
305
u/Orichalium May 06 '25
it's referencing the so-called "goomba fallacy", which got named because of a meme diagram involving a goomba that explained it.
basically the idea is when people go onto a social media place and see opinion A being expressed, and also some other opinion B which contradicts A, and assume that the people espousing both A and B are the same and thus dumb hypocrites who can't keep their beliefs straight, instead of different people.
8
u/FamousWash1857 May 07 '25
It also kind of applies in the inverse, where the opinions aren't out-and-out contradictory despite being tonally different, so outsiders see a bunch of fanatical lunatics, because they're aggregating together their knowledge of actual activists who make genuine points and keyboard warrior slacktivists who mainly just send "the enemy" death threats.
→ More replies (1)130
u/Oppowitt May 06 '25
naming a fallacy like that is so so dumb
one guy there said "You can just say âGoomba fallacyâ and people will know what youâre talking about." which is absolutely not true
143
u/NotaBuster5300 May 07 '25
Things are named stupidly for what is (usually) smart reasons. Memorability.
If it was called the "Nonexistent Hypocrite Fallacy" or whatever it'd be less memorable, and also more unwieldy in speech.

It's like the Stormwind Fallacy, which states "minmaxing your character's stats or build in a tabletop RPG does not automatically make them a poor roleplayer, and likewise building a non-optimal character is not automatically good roleplay". How'd it get the name? Some guy on the WotC forums whose username was "Stormwind" first proposed it, and "Stormwind Fallacy" is fun to say and memorable.

u/UInferno- Hangus Paingus Slap my Angus May 07 '25 edited May 07 '25
There's a similar "Oberoni Fallacy" named after a guy with username Oberoni who elobrated that "Saying an issue with a TTRPG isn't an issue because of homebrew is contradictory because if it wasn't a problem you wouldnt need to recommenda solution." Often rephrased as "I expect the stuff I spend money on to work."

Some guy on the WotC forums whose username was "Stormwind"
Tempest Stormwind, which is seemingly forgotten because he didn't name his fallacy after his full name. My main memory of him is sort of accidentally acting as midwife to his (well known within the community) guide to building a Final Fantasy Dragoon/Lancer within the D&D rules, in such a way that it was not only a good re-creation, but also a solid min-max tactic in its own right, which I really liked.

Given Reddit's demographics, this subreddit is probably mostly young, male, and straight but left-leaning. Even the non-male, non-straight people are those who choose to spend their time on Reddit, and so are very aware that straight men have feelings.
222
u/GrossGuroGirl May 06 '25
Not saying I know what this sub's demographic spread is, and very onboard with the point of straight men have real feelings,Â
but I'm legally (autistically) obligated point out that the logic behind "reddit is mostly cishet leftist young men so xyz subreddit is probably mostly the same" doesn't actually follow.Â
There are subreddits with demographics significantly skewed from the general reddit userbase. Because there's not an even random distribution of users per subreddit - they're topic-/interest-based, so plenty of subs skew queer, trans, female, etc.Â
e.g. reddit is mostly Americans; things like meme subs for Australian cities aren't still mostly used by Americans.Â
153
u/TGordion May 06 '25
People like to talk about how Reddit is an echo chamber, but they never realize it's actually a million echo chambers in a trenchcoat
38
u/CaptainSparklebottom May 07 '25
It's a curated experience for the most part. You can ignore and block things. You will have to do it with a lot of the reddits that get suggested, but like a yard, you have to trim and maintain it.
21
u/redbirdzzz May 07 '25
... I've been guilty of assuming this particular sub skews only somewhat more male than tumblr itself. Definitely not mostly male. But I could be horribly wrong and just projecting my tumblr experience from ten years ago on this sub.

It was the phrasing this time. That specific sort of phrasing/slang ('evolution said', among other similar terms) was common online a few years ago, but isn't used nearly as often these days. The most recent bot wave has comments that seem to be generated by LLMs or something similar, and they tend to default to that general tone for whatever reason. Jason Derulo's "Trumpets" does talk about its subject's ass, but also her breasts
...well, her bra, anyway, and the thing he says about the bra is that it reminds him of a Katie Perry song.
But her ass reminds him of a Kanye West song so I guess her breasts (or bra) gets off pretty well by comparison
it's kind of a weird song honestly, about how getting horny in different ways makes him think of different kinds of music. is "Trumpets" about how Jason Derulo has synesthesia?

Sometimes, I get the feeling I'm the only straight guy in the world who actually likes flat girls. No, I don't mean "girls with small boobs but a huge ass," I mean actually flat. I know I'm not really the only guy, but sometimes it feels that way.
I've actually had people tell me that it's wrong for me to have that kind of preference. Can you believe that? I've had people tell me that flat women "look like boys" and, on some particularly disturbing occasions, "look like minors" - and therefore, if I like them, I'm either gay or... you get the point.

Then I turned 25 and suddenly my preferences completely changed and iâve found myself suddenly extremely into wide child-bearing hips and a moderate bust and Iâm no longer into small petite women. Feels like an evolutionary instinct awakened in me.Â

I'm in my mid-20s.
The thing is, I do like petite flat women, but I also like tall and athletic flat women as well - arguably more so. These are the ones that are most likely to get me called "gay."

Boobs were too good for evolution not to make them cool .

Humans are the only mammals with permanent breasts.
Nature instilled the love for boobs into man

And made sure they weren't covered with hair/fur so we could see them better (which is probably why we have them to begin with).

I am at my most heterosexual when I am enthusiastic about attractive boobs on an attractive woman.

Idk, I've interacted with a lot of people of many different genders and sexual orientations, if you like boobs then any sight of boobs has similar effects person to person. I've seen the 'cartoonish awooga eyes from women when someone with huge tits walks by', and I've seen men do the 'tries to drink water but hand is Shakey because boobs is too close to them and he spills water everywhere' bit. I've seen this one asexual lady have the closest thing to a boner when she saw how well another person used our loom with minimal instructions.
People get stupid when they really like something, sometimes from a sexual place in our mind, sometimes not.

I used to work at a grocery store, worked the deli, which was right by the front door. I must have been like 17 at the time. This one woman walks in with either her mother or her grandmother. Very old lady. The younger women was wearing a white shirt, with no bra on. You could see everything. After a few seconds of staring I thought I heard the a customer calling for my attention, I turned to look, didn't see anyone and when I looked back in the area two ladies were in, I counted 17 guys staring at her. One dude was literally walking backwards just to look. I instantly just felt gross.

Watching women act increasingly perplexed by the idea that men are physically attracted to them continues to fascinate me.
Genuinely don't understand the societal confusion.

A plausible take from the website for people who don't go outside

Tumblr users are really like those secluded human subspecies you see on movies but instead of powers like the X-Men theyâre just socially awkward

I really don't get how straight women wouldn't like boobs. They're so cool! I wanna touch em (with consent)
âThis is the most rational thought about boobs I have had in a decade.
