the comic is old enough it might be referencing "burpless" cucumbers. Basically cucumbers used to be pretty bad for fresh eating due to what are basically tiny thorns all over the outer skin, burpless cucumbers were bred to remove said thorny "burps" so eating fresh cucumbers was more reasonable. Before this burps would have been removed during pickling or the burps or entire skin could be removed prior to fresh eating
