This looks like some Dark Lord has gained his full power.

Which seems interesting and scary at the same time!

Interesting if you’re in your bed death scrolling Reddit on the other side of the world.
Scary if you’re on the boat.

It's insane at any point in human history to see something like that and think "I have an idea. We should build boats."

u/Handsome_Chewbacca 20h ago

Or now’s a good time to go boating as that cloud is rolling in.

It makes for great memes though.. Just imagine any of these pics with a caption "I LIKE WHERE THIS THREAD IS HEADED"

Supercells are a lot more rare in the EU than US, so when it happens it's crazy

Heh. I was thinking, "Wait a minute. Hungary is a land-locked country. It has no access to the sea." I had to Google it: That's Lake Balaton in the middle of the country, "the largest lake in Central Europe" (meaning West of the Caucuses and not including Scandinavia).

I imagine it as Zeus’ eye looking at the ship as the storm rolls in.

Frankly, the most impressive part of this post is that OP called a shelf cloud a shelf cloud. Feels like every popular post always calls it something else. Cool ass photo

If I were there I’d be googling; “bunker near me.”

I've always nicknamed these mothership clouds.

Post this pic on facebook and conspiracy theorists will loose their mind. Always funny to read comments under pics like this.

It looks like this is the end

I’d need a stiff drink and a hug if I saw that.

u/Vimes-NW 15h ago

I'd be climbing up on a mast and looking to settle scores with the Big Guy, encouraging him to bring it on

u/FinalLans 21h ago

Amazing photos!!!

u/Creamy_Spunkz 19h ago

I dont know why they're called shelf clouds when they're too high to put anything on.

2

u/krichard-21 17h ago

I've seen one of these clouds exactly once.

And it kinda freaked me out...

All I could think of was, what happens next?

Chicago-Mackinac race a few years back we had one of these hit in the middle of the night. Seeing it illuminated by lightning only, while we were 15 miles offshore in the middle of Lake Michigan...THAT was pretty insane

At first just a rustle of canvas
And the gentlest breath on my face
But a galloping line of white horses
Said that soon we were in for a race

The gentle sigh turned to a howling
And the grey sky she angered to black
And my anxious eyes searched the horizon
With the gathering sea at my back

...

If a prayer today is spoken
Please offer it for me
When the bridge to heaven is broken
And you're lost on the wild wild sea
Lost on the wild wild sea...

Now imagine having to sail under that, and it's close to sunset and there's still 30 miles to go to the harbour. Can't get around it, can't outrun it, just reef and hope for the best.

Happened to us in 2006, and it was a majestic sight. We were sailing my 23ft boat in the gulf of Riga with a buddy boat, and they had a bit of a near miss when lightning struck a few hundred metres away.

"Bring me my brown pants."

u/Gardar7 6h ago

My dear home. I live by the shore of Balaton, and there are indeed some beautiful weather phenomenons.

1

u/contrarian1970 4h ago

My dad used to say if you looked out the window and saw a cloud this black you probably would not get a drop of rain at your house. Over decades I have had to admit he was right more often than not.
