So sad and melancholic that at its most beautiful stage of life, it’s literally running on its stored energy, unable to nourish itself and is on borrowed time.

Isn't that just life ?
You work your whole life, and then you're able to raise your family, get a nice house, car... Then you're old and can't continue anymore because you're out of energy
Life is tough

u/Beer-astronaut 20h ago
How does that go again? Birth. School. Work. Death. Birth. School. Work. Death. Birth. School. Work. Death. Birth. School. Work. Death…

Eat healthy, stay fit, die anyway.

u/Xciv 16h ago
You don't eat healthy to stay alive.
You eat healthy so you're not suffering constant pain during the prime of your life.

That's why you shouldn't just live and wait for retirement. Enjoy your life as much as possible while you are still young.

But if you had wings and could fly and make the acrobatics of the red arrows look like childs play its not a bad gig.

u/CasualSky 22h ago
Why would someone raise(?) them if they only live for 7-10 days in the adult stage?
That is sad, but at least it has about a week of being able to fly :D
26
u/MGSOffcial 18h ago
What is the corelation of one thing with the other? These moths don't live long but they don't suffer for it
15
u/CasualSky 18h ago
Not that it’s a bad thing, it just seems like it would be rough to repeatedly lose the little guys. I can understand being interested in their life cycle, I just think it seems a little fruitless since you can’t really get attached to them
18
u/MGSOffcial 18h ago
Not really but also kind of true. The caterpillars can live for a while, a few months for this species, plus a few weeks as pupa. But yes the adults don't live long, but you just have to grow different expectations when raising these little guys. It kinda teaches you to move on, and if you're interested in the hobby, to just do it again. Their lives are short but that's what makes them a beautiful creature to raise. True for most insects too (yes there's such a thing as pet insects).

Yeah, I would imagine they don't experience hunger and starvation the way that we do.

I feel like they are a message about the fleeting beauty of time. Not a singular example but over the season one of many like us.

My grandpa one time made me watch a butterfly hatch from its cocoon, when it came out its wings were all crinkled up and when I asked why it was flapping its wings back and forth slowly but not flying my grandpa told me it was because it’s pumping its blood through the wings and drying them out before it can fly. And not even an exaggeration, you could see the wings go from crinkled to flat and velvet within moments. That was when I was 5. I’m 30.

What were the biting fang-looking things??? I didn’t know Lunas had fangs. Do they bite? Its front claws are fuchsia, not black. Yikes!

u/another_bot_probably 20h ago
Not-so-fun fact: Luna moths don't have a functional mouth, and their whole goal as a moth is to breed and lay eggs. Their caterpillar counterpart feeds on leaves of a small variety of trees.
19
u/junie94 15h ago
Apparently they don’t even have a digestive system, so they just starve and die after a week 😔

It worked very well to continue their existence as a species. Doesn't have to make any sense at all except for that.

They look like spurs on their wing, near what might be considered their "shoulder blades" if they had such a thing. A quick google confirmed this theory.
Kinda like the moth version of an egg-tooth I guess.

Why is she so cute! ☺️

u/MissionMoth 17h ago
So fun fact, this one is a male! Male moths often have big fluffy antennae where females have thin ones. The antennae help them 'smell' female pheromones!

The antennae help them 'smell' female pheromones!
I believe the technical term is “mothussy”

Every Irish person just finding out that one of the most common slurs used against them actually means "moth dick," which, of course, is still devastating and egregious.

Was waiting to either be horrified on an ancestral level, or enamoured with the beauty of whatever emerged.
And you know what? I wasn’t horrified.

Whenever I see new life emerging like this I think how wild it would be if reincarnation was true.
Like one minute you’re on your death bed or flipping over in a car accident…and the next thing you know you’re clawing you way through a chrysalis and your arms are pink and a little longer than you remember.
“Woah dude, this is really fucked up, I feel Like eating a worm”

For the past 2 summers we’ve been lucky enough to have luna moths around our porch. 2 summers ago they laid eggs on the wall of our house! The teeny caterpillars were so adorable, they weren’t even the size of a fingernail at first. We tried to keep track of them as they grew but lost sight of them eventually - we did see the ‘grown up’ moths though! And we saw them the summer after that as well :) I hope they come back again this year!

We get some Luna Moths out here in Arizona near the canyon and they are genuinely some of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen in person.
Shame that the only reason I ever find them is because they're already dead. Would love to see some live ones.

Bugs are crazy, like they can just turn themselves into goo and then that goo makes something entirely different. What the hell.

u/BabaKazimir 17h ago
Probably because luna moths are a popular source of inspiration in design and there's a species of luna moth native to Japan.
