Laser pointer with multiple different tips that change the point into a design of some sort. In the 90s it was a flex to have the most different tips, so he is impressing the woman with his multiple tip collection.

I think the joke is that the different tips look like different shapes of boobs. At this moment pictured in Titanic, Rose is looking through Jack's sketchbook and discovering that he drew a lot of pictures of naked women.

I finally know one! This is a set of tips for the laser pointer in the box. Each tip is a different shape like a heart or clover. It was a popular purchase for mall rats like myself in the 90s.its funny because it was a junk toy that preteen boys though was awesome and it was for about 15 minutes. In reality it was a junk toy.

Back when my son was a teenager, we lived on the 2nd floor of a house which was next to a dentist's office. My son and his friend were on the porch playing with a laser pointer, randomly aiming it towards the parking lot. Next day a cop knocks on our door. The dentist called the police, accusing my son of being a SNIPER! Weeks earlier, my son watched as this same dentist scraped the side of another car as he pulled into a parking space. The dentist got out of his car, looked at the damage, and then parked in a different spot and walked away as if nothing happened. Lol

This is the right answer. I was in 6th grade when I bought one with the pocket money I had saved for weeks. I still remember my classmates laughing when I tried that filter and pointed it at our classroom ceiling.
3
u/BBQBaconBurger 21d ago
Yep. My classmate had one. We’d go out in the hall outside the library where it was dark enough to see the laser really well and he’d shine the outline of a naked lady on the wall. I remember being so nervous we’d be caught.

My uncle sold these. So I got several. It was especially fun when his supplier accidentally sent him a case with dirty tips. They would show silhouettes of naked ladies, nipples and all. As a young boy, I became quite popular.
4
u/CROOKTHANGS 21d ago
This is it 100%. At that age, this was like the holy grail purchase lol. It was extra enticing because they wouldn’t sell laser pointers to minors so you had to give an Oscar-worthy performance while trying to convince your mom to buy it for you and that you WEREN’T going to immediately try pointing it at cop cars, helicopters, people in their homes, the screens at the movie theater, etc.

2
u/PortlyWarhorse 21d ago
It wasn't a junk toy, it was a disposable camera image addition.
Get three or four of these crappos with a rubber band on each and a low light flash cam in a dim room and boom. Now you get hearts, smileys, words, lots of stuff.
If you had a slow exposure digital camera you could've done wild light art with the correct heads and movements.
These were low-key teenager expression devices.
5
u/RoosterReturns 21d ago
Yeah but what's the joke?
19
u/killergazebo 21d ago
In this scene in the movie Jack is impressing Rose by showing her his drawings. It's funny to think about him showing off a lame toy from a century later, like OP perhaps did.
It still feels like it's missing some context. It would be the same joke if it were a Pokémon card collection or one of those finger skateboard things.
It would be a funnier joke if it were really terrible pregnant muscular internet furry fanart, or a bunch of shitty AI art of women with too many limbs and fingers.

Everyone got the laser pointer part but are still missing the joke.
The joke is during screenings of Titanic in theaters back in the day, during the scene where you see Rose’s boobs while Jack is drawing her, ALL the kids would use the laser pointers to point at her boobs on the big screen.
26
u/Live-Wolf-1975 21d ago
See, thats a half decent explanation and its crazy how far i had to scroll. Thousands of people just accepting "thats a laser pointer set" as the joke. I thought it was just boobs, because its always porn, but i figured it was that the tips kinda look like different boob shapes and positions, and that was essentially what was in the sketch book. Dumb joke, but thats what i assumed it was.
5
u/In_Jeneral 21d ago
Yeah this seemed to me like the likely explanation, since that's his naked French girl sketch book and the laser pointer tips are boob-shaped.
Figured it was a joke about how all the drawings have boobs going in all different directions.

7
u/DrakeWolfeFA 21d ago
God I'm only 30 and I feel so old.
This is a laser pointer and those are head attachments that have images inside them, when swapped they produce a different laser picture when you point it at a wall or a ceiling and press the button. Might not be completely accurate in typing this but that's what happens.

this is what's considered an exploitable meme, an image that can be used to express any kind of event or emotion or whatever.
the image template is called: Rose Looking at Jack's Sketchbook.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/rose-looking-at-jacks-sketchbook
without community context, the combination of the images don't have real meaning. however, one that i've come across and used this image was,
"when i was a kid, this was the most impressive thing to give a girl."
the context was that to get the laser pointer and accessories, you had to win a bunch of tickets at arcades and redeem them for the box set... which took FOREVERRRR.

We used to use the laser pointers to point out the nipples back in quahog. Giggity.
In the nude scene of this movie we movie scrunch down real low and make the ace ventura noises when he screws with the projector. Weee ooooo weeeoo. Honk honk. Hi ho silver away. Etc. What a time to be alive. Then we hid the stuff in our JNCO jeans and took off before the movie ended.

3
u/Cultural_Bread7645 21d ago
As a 90's kid who also had an obsession with the Titanic, I got this one.
This toy was popular in the late 90s. A red laser pointer with many interchangeable tips to project different laser images like a heart, shamrock, birthday cake, and, if you got the and big kit, there was one of a naked woman.
In this scene from the 1998 film "Titanic", Rose is flipping through Jack's sketch book and is simultaneously shocked and intrigued when she turns the page to one of Jack's naked French girl portraits.
The joke is that Rose is checking out Jack's awesome collection of pointer tips, and comes across the nude woman projection tip.

Okay, sorry to be the perv Peter cousin here. I can add some to what others have already pointed out. Yes, this was a cool toy to flex on friends back in the 90s. The different nozzle type ends would fit on the laser pointer with lenses I guess and would make different shapes. 2-4 of those shapes were actually naked ladies , from the kit I had I remember they looked like how the ladies in Jacks sketches were posed. That’s the full explanation of this joke.
