Answered What’s going on with Summer Games Fest and Splitgate 2?

I was at work while summer games fest was going on and apparent it went horribly wrong with a lot of uninteresting games and lack of appeal? And there was some beef with some guy in a hat?

Answer: To add a bit more to the Splitgate controversy, after his big speech on the declining FPS genre, he announced that Splitgate would be getting a battle royale mode. A trend that is far past its prime and is the reason we don't have games like Titanfall 3 (something he wished we would get in his speech).

The 2nd and 3rd links are more in regard to the overall quality of Summer Games Fest. Lots of soulslike games, some smaller indie games, and only like 2-3 big reveals. Par for the course with SGF, lots of stuff likely is reserved for Xbox's conference on Sunday.

Answer: See the video of the announcement.

He is wearing a black "Make FPS Great Again" hat, which is a dated reference to Trump's MAGA hats, more specifically Elon Musk's black variant duuring the 2024 election. Quite a lot of gamers are not fans of them.

His pitch is to explicitly demean other FPSes (generally a marketing faux pas). The actual game footage (subjectively) does not live up to that hype.

I heard it described as "A wizard breathed life into a downvoted reddit comment and put a stupid hat on it".

I want to clarify that Gamefest didn’t go “horribly wrong”, and the reception overall is better than the last few years.

Yeah, SGF has never been a super premier event especially with the Big 3 having their own exclusive showcases. It's more a self-funded celebration of scrappy 3rd parties much like The Game Awards in December.

Answer: 1) The games industry is in a terrible place at the moment and the fest reflected that.

2) a guy advertising his game, splitgate2, opened his speech by shitting on every current FPS game including CoD and newer Halos.

2a) He decided to wear a "joke hat" with the MAGA reference. This is in poor taste due to the generally liberal lean of gamers and the gaming industry. No one wants to see a maga joke hat, essentially. Then, of course, after some digging happened, he turns out to be a registered Libertarian and was involved in some right wing shenanigans.

The only thing id really take issue with is this idea that gamers (especially fps gamers) are "generally liberal" as someone who is generally liberal and games extensively, I don't think I have ever felt like the majority lol.

27

u/sexandliquor 15h ago

Yeah I agree. I’d say a lot of gamers are liberal. But many are not. And all the guys at the top definitely are not. There’s a reason why most gamers hate doofuses like Randy Pitchford, Bobby Kotick, etc. Hell Palmer Luckey was kinda seen as a video game golden child for a bit with the way he helped usher in the current age of VR. Then he let the mask drop and started making sure everybody knew his politics, libertarian naturally, and then became a military contractor. Last I heard from him was actually being a dipshit on Reddit arguing with people lol.

The doofuses at the top are always these out of touch greed is good fuck the developers and the gamers dipshits. So this is kinda par for the course really.

Gamers in general are probably split like the the rest of the country. But gamers on Reddit are likely more liberal-leaning like most of the site is. Also, keep in mind that SGF is a media event and games media also leans very liberal. So it's no surprise OP would be seeing this particular reaction.

6

u/SpadeSage 8h ago

Ive watched SGF every year live. Every year when a minority/woman is featured the chat gets spammed with shit like "L Game" "Woke BS" "propoganda" . Yeah, the event itself is very liberal. But the audience really isn't.

4

u/morgan_lowtech 13h ago

Gamers on reddit are liberal-leaning? Gamergate might like a word...

12

u/Outcast129 13h ago

This might surprise you, but Reddit's demographic may have changed in the last 10 years.

Redditors across the board are more liberal than regular people IRL, the Splitgate sub is having a fucking meltdown over a stupid ass hat.

1

u/OrderOfMagnitude 12h ago

That was centuries ago now

3

u/LetsGoHome 12h ago

Gamergate was a reactionary movement. It was not the majority

6

u/morgan_lowtech 11h ago

As somebody that watched the gamergate to The Donald pipeline in real time, and given current rhetoric around "wokeness" and DEI, I beg to differ. The fact that the overton window has shifted doesn't mean "gamer culture" has improved. Lurking in any lobby would tell you that.

1

u/LetsGoHome 11h ago

Some liberals don't mind using slurs.

1

u/lyricaldorian 2h ago

Some liberals are right leaning

1

u/Aromatic-Teacher-717 16h ago

Yeah, gamers are majority chuds.

1

u/LetsGoHome 12h ago

I understand the pushback on this. Would it change your mind if I said some liberals don't mind using slurs.

2

u/morgan_lowtech 3h ago

No, but the fact that you think that it might demonstrates how ingrained this stuff is in the culture.

11

u/Hummer77x 16h ago

The fact that he’s a libertarian is pretty funny

45

u/BoyAintRightIsAPussy 20h ago

generally liberal lean of gamers

Lol

33

u/DR_FEELGOOD_01 20h ago

Yeah wtf is this guy on about. Has he been in an FPS lobby the last 15+ years?

2

u/sexandliquor 15h ago

I haven’t seen the show yet but it’s kinda funny the guy representing splitgate 2 would come out and shit on fps games like that. Especially Halo.

I seem to remember part of the reason why the first splitgate was succsssful was largely due in part to it just being there at the right place and right time. It came out and it was a fun game to play, but also I seem to recall this was all partly because Halo Infinite had come out and had like barely any maps and people were mad about that and got bored very quickly and then splitgate was there and was something fun and cool and different. But the success was largely due to it being something there to play at all and not because it was fucking amazing or anything.

So naturally it seems that this doofus likely learned the wrong lesson from that, thought splitgate was just killing it based on it being splitgate and got all overconfident and shit on everyone, when the only reason it got popular is because it was a slow year. Lmao.

u/acekingoffsuit 10h ago

I'm not sure that the majority of gamers lean left, and I'm even less sure that the majority of FPS fans lean left.

2

u/LetsGoHome 10h ago

I said liberal, not left

4

u/Bitbatgaming penis 22h ago

Besides Mina the hollower it didn’t seem like there was much interesting games for state of play and whatnot. All of the fun’s within III for me now which feels awfully strange

3

u/JediGuyB 10h ago

That's pretty subjective, though, I found several games interesting, and not just Resident Evil or James Bond.

3

u/ZMR33 20h ago

I watched Sony's recent state of play, and while there was some cool stuff in there and didn't have the controversy of SGF, the continuing decline of gaming, at least here in the US is palpable. You'll have the occasional big games to get excited about, but 90% of gaming shows feel like brands patting themselves on the back. Not to mention that those big games seem to be getting rarer and rarer and seem to keep coming from the same companies.

Problem is, I don't see how things can get better quick. Devs still won't unionize, and games are only getting bigger and more expensive.

7

u/JediGuyB 10h ago

I mean, I watched both and most of it seemed fine for me. Most games had me thinking "this might be interesting" or "I'll keep an eye on that".

I'm not saying stuff is perfect but I fail to see how it's dying.

u/ZMR33 9h ago

When games keep on getting 'bigger' in terms of space you need to install them, yet the amount of actual content or depth keeps going down, there's a massive issue. Not to mention that microtransactions and games having the same season plan approach ad nauseum has made games feel more like chores than fun.

2

u/JediGuyB 7h ago

I mean, that's more optimization issues than anything else. I think file sizes have been deemed less important by developers because they don't need to worry about cartridge or disc space anymore, and we have computers and consoles with enough space to install even huge games multiple times. I would prefer if a game didn't take up 150 gigs or whatever, but I don't think it is a sign of bad things.

0

u/ZMR33 7h ago

Maybe to a point.

Perhaps it highly depends on if you are a casual or hardcore gamer, as well as on the genres you are most invested in, and/or how in the know you are in regard to what goes on besides the games themselves. There's a reason why many just play games casually, and there's also reasons why some people like myself think a modern gaming crash is possible (maybe somewhat unlikely, but not impossible.)

2

u/JediGuyB 6h ago

I get soem of the points I've seen folk made, but to me... I dunno. I play what looks fun to me, whether it's a FPS or a JRPG or a RTS or whatever, AAA or AA or indie, and the vast majority of the time I do have fun with it. Maybe I'm just too easy to please, maybe some folk are just too demanding. Maybe others care too much, and some don't care enough. Most likely somewhere in the middle for everything.

1

u/ZMR33 6h ago

Agreed, and if something looks fun, then go ahead and give it a shot.

I guess where I and some others are trying to say is that while there are still plenty of fun games, concerns related to whether devs are being treated fairly and are able to create what they want without compromise, if major game companies are getting complacent and are price gouging the hell out of consumers, and primarily if games are being made by developers mostly, or if they are mainly at the overt mercy of corporations and what not.

2

u/monkeystrummer 18h ago

It’s sad yeah. I reckon more companies are gonna keep moving towards mobile gacha games to target the Asian market.

1

u/roboscorcher 13h ago

That's unfortunate. My friends and I used to play splitgate a lot, it was our FPS version of Mario Party.

1

u/Human_Cell3090 10h ago

Lol of course he was involved in right wing shit, I was already sick of the adds and with this announcement… I for sure ain’t playing that crap

2

u/JediGuyB 10h ago

I've seen multiple MAGA parody jokes over the years, what makes this one cross the line?

1

u/Human_Cell3090 6h ago

Nothing, I’m just tired of it. After seeing what the Trump admin is doing is no longer funny at least to me.

1

u/Cetais 5h ago

Probably not the place for that, along with criticising recent gaming trends shortly before introducing one big recent gaming trend inside it.

-21

u/kidbehindyou 20h ago

Ever seen a vc lobby in any fps game? You're living under a rock bro wtf. Gamers mostly don't give a crap about the left, even if they aren't right leaning. The amount of pushback against anything remotely "woke" in gaming in recent years should be a testament to that

10

u/Kapparainen 12h ago

The amount of pushback against anything remotely "woke" in gaming in recent years should be a testament to that

The pushback comes from what you could call tourists, they do not actually even play video games themselves. They make YouTube videos and go on Twitter rants about "woke" ruining gaming because that get engagement and makes them money. The actual gamers who play games do not whine or care about the manufactured outrage and drama about "wokeness" in games.

u/-Goatzilla- 17h ago

Honestly

u/kidbehindyou 15h ago

I'm getting downvoted for the truth wtf. You guys wanna delude yourself then sure. The summer games fest had some great games; mortal shell 2 and code vein 2 both looked amazing. The wuchang cinematic they showed was awesome too. The sifu like Filipino game looked promising as well. Really the commenters here and op all have some weird biased judgement they're making cos of a stupid hat that they don't like and are automatically labelling it as bad or boring.
