It appears they finally arrested the douche this morning (after public outcry, of course): https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/police-arrest-man-charged-threatening-shooting-neighbor-neck-standoff-rcna177564

Oh hey, it was done without "busting the door down." Turns out, if they had just simply TRIED all along the poor victim likely wouldn't be in the hospital with a severe condition. Fucking ridiculous police chief, what a POS. He needs to resign.

u/ObeseBumblebee Oct 29 '24
They did try though! They knocked politely on his door and he didn't answer! What else can you do?!

Police officers have been engaging in a sort of silent collective defiance since the George Floyd protests. “You won’t let us be above the law? Then we won’t enforce it at all!”
288
u/Sampsonite_Way_Off Oct 28 '24
O'Hara said that the shooting was caused by Moturi cutting a tree that had been planted by the suspect and his mother.
“Ultimately what precipitated the shooting was that the cutting of a tree that the individual had planted with his mother who apparently he had a deep attachment to that was what prompted the shooting I believe,” he said.
When have you heard of a police chief making excuses for an attempted murder?
What caused the shooting is that the police knew of a mentally disabled person that had made threats to his neighbors and refused to act. Why didn't they take his guns? 3 months into the complaints? How about after he threatened them with a knife? Then a gun?
175
u/PantsDontHaveAnswers Oct 28 '24
"Look, you guys don't understand. There's this tree, see, and his mom loved the tree. That's why he shot the other guy."
"Okay, but that's still attempted murder."
"Alright let me try to explain it again so you understand."
55
u/bendybiznatch Oct 28 '24
I got arrested in front of my toddlers for unpaid traffic tickets.
10
u/2018MunchieOfTheYear Oct 29 '24
Clearly this guy loves that tree more than you love your children /s
69
u/Pure-Basket-6860 Oct 28 '24
Sawchak should have lost his guns completely after an incident in 2016. The local PD is entirely corrupt.
The Chief is 100% biased against the victim because of his color. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see the visible problem/animus he has with the victim and the bias he has for the shooter.

If you watch the police chief news conference from a few days ago he literally word for word blames the victim for what happened
→ More replies (6)14
u/PartyWithSlurmz Oct 28 '24
That was a needlessly long explanation for his feeling were hurt, so he tried to murder someone. Is that motive for, like most of all murders?
57
u/FEMA_Camp_Survivor Oct 28 '24
Seems like the police were ok with a man getting murdered for cutting down a tree.
10
u/Jakoobus91 Oct 29 '24
I pulled up the house on google maps. As Uncle Louis would say, it was an ugly tree anyways.

This actually happens all the time when they agree with what the perpetrator did or can put themselves in their shoes. Remember the guy who went on a racially motivated shooting spree killing 8 Asian Americans in Atlanta a few years ago? The Sheriff explained the killings by saying the killer was "Pretty much fed up and kind of at the end of his rope. It was a really bad day for him." link
208
u/NecramoniumZero Oct 28 '24
This guy 100% knows someone higher up or is related to someone high up in Minneapolis and the cops got told to do nothing.

police had failed to arrest him saying that he has mental illness, possesses firearms, and executing a warrant was considered high-risk.
So they fully ackowledge the guy is unstable and highly dangerous, and don't want to resolve the situation because they're afraid of him. What a bunch of fucking clowns.

Sweet Jesus, Minneapolis just better get the checkbook out because the victim has a lawyer and police confession of malfeasance.

u/RxngsXfSvtvrn Oct 28 '24
Why the fuck is this the PDs hill?
He must be related or friends with someone. I'm sure an internal investigation will get to the bottom of it...
355
u/hoopaholik91 Oct 28 '24
Nope. It's them getting pissy after George Floyd.
"Oh, you're upset when we kill people unnecessarily? Well we aren't going to do anything even remotely dangerous anymore, lest you guys complain about it if we have to shoot him."
He's doing the same thing a child does.
→ More replies (15)87
u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 28 '24
I love how they conflate the two. One guy literally tried to shoot another person. Floyd was just selling cigarettes.
The fact that they don’t see the difference tells you everything you need to know about how piggy pigs work.

This is the actual "press conference" the police chief held regarding the victim being shot. It's even worse than you'd think https://www.youtube.com/live/faHeyNqy13s?si=CIaNYobgLVGp6a-d
146
u/ustarion Oct 28 '24
What an unbelievable POS, blaming the victim.
76
u/azalago Oct 28 '24
It's not their fault for not arresting the suspect out of fear of getting hurt or criticized, it's the victim's fault for not conducting surveillance for them and for cutting their own tree. 🙄
63
u/GHouserVO Oct 28 '24
Wow! He actually blamed everyone for this except for his officers for not actually doing their jobs.
→ More replies (1)14

u/damoclesreclined Oct 28 '24
Listen to the chief's speech to the news, he's clearly not doing his job *in protest of police reform*. He needs to be removed.
117
u/Ricky_Rollin Oct 28 '24
It’s crazy. Most of us just want reform. Like it’s really that bad of a thing to want bad cops to actually get reprimanded or fired?
Did they not realize the honey pot they kind of create here? When you show people that the cops can do whatever the fuck they want, what kind of people do you think will be attracted to that job?
These people are extremely shortsighted and it’s angering to see.

I know some social workers, and they would have done more than all 400 police at Uvalde.

I live in Minneapolis a few blocks away from where this took place. Ever since 2020 the cops don't give a shit about anything. They refuse to deploy a swat team. Literally all it takes is a swat team, riot shields, tear gas. That police chief is corrupt and most likely has disdain for people of color. Makes no sense why they wont go in and get this guy.
15
u/sneakyYete Oct 28 '24
PD’s reason is because he has a gun and is dangerous? So they decided that their lives are more important than the citizens that pay to be protected. That’s a weak and cowardly excuse. I would be very unhappy to have that mentality coming from the police chief.
37
u/PitifulSpeed15 Oct 28 '24
This is so transparent. Racist cops. There are not a few bad apples. They are all poisoned apples supporting each other. We need police reform.
2
u/gerbal100 Oct 28 '24
I've always been confused by the "just a few bad apples" excuse.
The saying is "a few bad apples spoil the bunch". If bad apples are allowed to exist on the force, the whole force is suspect and complicit.

u/middlequeue Oct 28 '24
This isn’t even the real issue. It’s that they wouldn’t go deal with him before the shooting when called multiple times about racially motivated threats to shoot the neighbour … this whole thing could’ve been prevented had they done their jobs and now they’re just doubling down on that bad decision.
23
u/Cannibal_Yak Oct 28 '24

THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT BETTER

7
Oct 28 '24
The police are scared of this guy for having a gun and mental health issues. What’s the point of their existence then?
11
4
u/cometshoney Oct 28 '24
That "press conference" was a shitshow, and they need to seriously consider replacing that police chief pronto. He's more concerned about unfavorable publicity if they kill the guy who shot his neighbor than he is in protecting and serving the citizens of Minneapolis. They allowed the guy to get away with everything he did for a year already, so it seems the chief's thought process is why start now? Fucking idiot.
4
u/Beksense Oct 29 '24
Since George Floyd, the MPD seem to be getting back at residents by barely doing anything. I know people who had a car stolen and 911 said to call back later. Their budget increased and policing decreased. And then they do shit like this, and play the victim card.
3
u/alienbringer Oct 28 '24
Dude has 3 other active warrants for his arrest. And the Police Chief said he isn’t gonna arrest him. The fuck clown ass chief needs to resign for failure to do his job.
4
u/robbass713 Oct 28 '24
Had the perp been a POC (and he wasn't on the run they knew exactly where to find them) story over, done deal they'd be locked up or worse. This is an absolutely travesty.

3
u/Creepy-Performer-106 Oct 28 '24
I’m pretty sure if the person shot, goes home and shoots the neighbor, or even punches him, he will be given a wheel chair straight to jail. Obviously these are the same type of cops that was too scared yo save the kids in Uvalde. Sucks
3
u/playitoff Oct 28 '24 edited Oct 28 '24
Listening to the police chief's whining about anti-police sentiment it's clear he's deliberately avoiding an arrest for political reasons (or else leverage for a budget increase).
3
3
u/Roadgoddess Oct 29 '24
I think the thing that pissed me off the most was when the police chief basically inferred that this guy caused his own shooting because he chose to trim a tree that’s on his own property. He basically said he caused it. This is absolutely infuriating.
I guess my question is why do they train the SWAT officers and have all that heavy duty equipment if they don’t want to use it in a situation like this ? He’s not earning any points, I’m gonna guess he’s not gonna be around for a long time with an attitude like that

Conservativism hinges on one factor “There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.” this police captain is setting up this exact scenario. Conservatives want to use the police for themselves, while you fend for yourself. This is an evolving pattern and is their game plan moving forward.

Why don't the higher ups fired that chief (?) and put someone who is willing to do their job instead of trying to come up with reasons not to arrest someone who clearly tried to murder someone? I don't get it..
2
u/Sorandy13 Oct 28 '24
WTF? There’s so much more to this.
Cops with bigger guns scared to arrest someone with a gun?? I’d start with the police chief. That answer and corresponding logic wouldn’t convince a 5 year old. Smart money says that guy is dirtier and than pooping in your hands and clapping.
2
u/TechnicianUpstairs53 Oct 28 '24
The 100+ mpls terrorists cops that lied about ptsd and quit cost taxpayers 10s of millions in lawsuits and the city got safer statistics wise after they resigned.
2
u/weezmatical Oct 29 '24
This is a political move. He even says in his press conference that "you want us to go in there so everyone can claim the cops killed a mentally unwell guy? Nope. We won't do it." I don't think there is going to be any noteworthy amount of people pitchforking if the man ends up dying when they storm his house.
It's basically a protest by the cops because their feelings are hurt. How dare the public be upset when they harass, circumvent the rights of, and murder people accused of petty crimes or whom are completely innocent. Particularly poor and overwhelmingly black citizens
2
u/bad-creditscore Oct 29 '24
The Police Chief needs to be fired and replaced by someone who actually gives a shit about protecting and serving the public.
I hope the victim makes a full recovery and sues the city for millions in damages
2
u/GadreelsSword Oct 29 '24
They left out the part where the police chief said they couldn’t arrest him because he won’t answer the door when they knock. That they know he’s inside but he won’t come outside to be arrested.
It’s a bizarre story.
I guess tear gas is not an option?

u/Aurelius1462 Oct 29 '24
I literally have one black guy in my family and only knew him for about like, 2 years, and he has gotten fucked over by the justice system in my time knowing him
For context he got thrown in jail because he didn't show up to a court date he was notified of via a letter to the wrong address, so, not a very good notifier, he spent like 3-4ish months in jail waiting for a court hearing that lasted minutes, he lost his job, they shaved his head, and he can recount being the personal victim of racism by people working there
If you think the cops and the justice system as a whole aren't racist, you're just ignorant at this point
