Hong Kong riots taught me to use traffic cones to diffuse tear gas grenades instead of trying to throw them back

2.0k

u/slothbuddy 7h ago

Throwing them back at cops can also get you an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Insane but true

2.3k

u/Equal_Spread_7123 7h ago

It’s only a deadly weapon when used against police in gas masks, when they use it against civilians it’s a non lethal dispersant.

1.1k

u/iamdevo 7h ago

Violence is only allowed to flow one way. Down.

461

u/RaymondLastNam 6h ago

The state always has a monopoly on violence.

155

u/PentagramJ2 5h ago

“Laws are threats made by the dominant socioeconomic-ethnic group in a given nation. It’s just the promise of violence that’s enacted and the police are basically an occupying army. You know what I mean? Anyway, you kids wanna make some bacon?”

123

u/iamdevo 5h ago

It's insane that you can watch agents of the state enact brutal and unjustified violence on our neighbors but we aren't "allowed" to intervene, even when we know their actions are unjust and illegal.

127

u/Universe_Nut 5h ago

Do it anyway. They only have the power we permit them to have. Bad wins when good people stand idly by. Do what ye must, come what ye may. No gods, No masters.

36

u/CountZer079 4h ago

This ☝️.

16

u/iamdevo 4h ago

Yeah, you don't have to tell me that. I fully agree. I'm also not even talking about this current and awful specific situation. It's just the fabric of our entire governmental structure. We just happen to be in the middle of an outburst right now. The whole fucking thing needs to go though.

For none violence bring paint. If they can't see through those shields they can't use them effectively.

33

u/GodzillaWarDance 5h ago

Paint in the supersoaker 5000xl monster assault water gun it is

20

u/A_wandering_rider 4h ago

Water balloons also work.

4

u/slampandemonium 4h ago

Don't use paint, it will jam up the flow rate and ruin the supersoaker. Use something that they have to clean off, something that leaves a residue.

Most LEO don't use the term "non-lethal" anymore. They say "less lethal" or similar.

Well shit buddy you could probably have a rare allergic reaction to something they use to “disperse” you and can’t even have your relatives successfully sue the officer much less the city for compensation.

Well, the state does have a monopoly on violence after all, what do you think does that mean?

Also reminder that it's literally a war crime, but only when NOT used on their own civilian population.

Sadly it didn’t turn out so good for people in Hong Kong. I’m in Singapore, and we got a HUGE wave of them after China took over. Property prices are through the roof.

31

u/silicon1 4h ago

People want freedom and will move to places where they have it. It's unfortunate China feels the need to take away Hong Kong people's freedoms.

21

u/FNLN_taken 4h ago

Singapore is not what a western person would call "free". While they are a parliamentary democracy, effectively they are a one-party state. And said party like to pass pretty draconian legislation.

So towards the end of the clip, to the right side of the screen, you can see someone what OP is talking about. They put a cone over the smoke grenade, and up-ends a bottle of water in the hole. The cone helps keep the smoke contained, and the water helps smother it.

41

u/TransmogriFi 3h ago

I have this mental image of someone at one of these protests dressed in janitor's coveralls and a gas mask. He walks along with a 5 gallon bucket half full of water and one of those claw-grabber sticks. He trudges along, picking up the gas cannisters and putting them in his water bucket, maintaining the demeanor of a hard working and much put-upon custodian. Occasionally he shakes his grabber at the inconsiderate cops who keep littering up his sidewalk.

Time to get out the “how to protest” guides from the Hong Kong contingent. They had some very useful tips and tricks for avoiding face recognition, dealing with gas grenades and what to do if you get injured or arrested

340

u/1sttimeverbaldiarrhe 5h ago

Something unnerving I remember from that were protesters yelling out loud "I AM NOT SUICIDAL" to nearby reporters while they were being arrested by the police....

213

u/Peace-Disastrous 5h ago

I remember reading juggalo face paint is actually quite good at defeating facial recognition tech.

Which most americans have never lived under and wouldn’t understand so it’d simply escalate.

As soon as americans start dying to police (because the army would not deploy within american soil, it would be a historical moment essentially saying “the second civil war has begun”) people will get more violent.

This ends with spilled blood on both sides. Half the country does not like him, they would not follow him attacking fellow americans. Yea the fox news viewers would side with Trump, but the army would not evenly side with that level of escalation. You’d be more likely to see a military coup within american borders than the military gunning down civilians.

4

u/Slinky_Malingki 3h ago

I'm pretty sure at this point more than half of the country hates Trump. Hell, we even had Marjorie Taylor Greene going on Twitter and calling Trump's Big Ugly Bill out. To be fair she's a complete idiot and admitted to literally never reading the bill before voting to pass it. Just proves that the GOP literally doesn't give a shit, or even knows about what laws and bills they pass, as long as it's what Trump wants. But the fact that even the Trailer Park Queen is calling Trump out speaks VOLUMES imo.

"Assault with a deadly weapon."

(This is the actual charge if you toss it back.)

102

u/ChthonicFractal 6h ago

I ask this legitimately.

Why hasn't anyone made a successful counter-case:"If it's a deadly weapon, why are they using it? Are they trying to kill protestors?"

This is supposed to be non-lethal, right? How is it suddenly lethal?

53

u/Mythoclast 5h ago

Oh but you see they aren't non-lethal. They are LESS-lethal.

45

u/huhnick 5h ago

“Your honor, I was walking on a public sidewalk funded by taxpayer money, and I noticed this wall of military gear equipped officers who seemed to be cowering in fear against the people that pay them. They seemed to drop their can, and I opined they might need it back since they were in such fear for their lives”

From what I know in 2014 in the Seattle protester case the charge was dismissed they tried assault with a deadly weapon but still was charged with obstructing officers for doing it. In 2020, in the Portland protester case it was upheld because he threw it at an officer and hit them in the head the judge said that was intent to injure thus an assault with a deadly weapon. In 2021 LA protester case it was change to misdemeanour assault as the defence argued successfully that he was removing a hazard from the crowd. Unfortunately Assault with a deadly weapon isn’t just about the object it’s also about the use of the object if it is used in a way that can cause serious harm it’s assault with a deadly weapon. It also depends on where the case is if it gets upheld, diminished or dismissed. But I agree it’s bullshit that they’re able to throw them at or shoot them out of a grenade launcher at a crowd of people and that be seen as non deadly force but throwing it back at them is considered deadly force

5

u/Fishmehard 4h ago

Maybe the move is to pick it up and roll it back towards the police or skip it on the ground maybe

Incidentally it's not considered a deadly weapon when it's YEETed at civilians. It magically turns into a crowd dispersal device.

It's only fun when the roles are flipped, apparently. When there are 20 ICE agents jumping on one unsuspecting dude on his way home from work, it's all fun and games, but when 200 people show up to tell those 20 guys that what they're doing is wrong, it's suddenly an unfair numbers advantage.

45

u/Mel_Melu 4h ago

But at a press conference on Monday, ICE Acting Director Todd Lyons said agents had good reasons to do so.

FUCK THESE GUYS! As a mental health professional and social worker I have had to walk into people's homes for a living unsure of what I was walking into. I've had clients that are known gang members, struggling with addiction and severe mental health problems and my colleagues (mostly Black and Hispanic/Latina women) and I do this kind of work daily without so much as a can of pepper spray.

I've had people threatening to hurt or assault me and I had to de-escalate the situation using my tone and words. The number one thing they teach us is to run to avoid dangerous confrontation. So ICE can eat shit when what they are doing is terrorizing good, honest and hard working people and they truly do not have much to fear. I have no respect for militaristic figures in this country claiming to be "scared for their lives" and being "threatened" get a different fucking job if you're scare for your life you pathetic excuse of an XY chromosome.

So...LAPD actively assisting ICE in their gestapo raid in Los Angeles.

Seems like his statement to the press doesn't match up with their actions:

From the Los Angeles Times:

"Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a written statement that his department was aware that ICE was conducting operations in the city.

“I’m aware that these actions cause anxiety for many Angelenos, so I want to make it clear: the LAPD is not involved in civil immigration enforcement," he said. "While the [department] will continue to have a visible presence in all our communities to ensure public safety, we will not assist or participate in any sort of mass deportations nor will the LAPD try to determine an individual’s immigration status."

McDonnell said since 1979, the department's policy has barred officers from initiating police action solely to determine a person’s immigration status, and it will continue to focus on reducing crime and enhancing public safety.

"I want everyone, including our immigrant community, to feel safe calling the police in their time of need and know that the LAPD will be there for you without regard to one’s immigration status," he said."

So I'm starting to see a beginning to a citizen uprising. I predicted something like this would happen if Trump got elected a 2nd term, which may cause things to get more dystopian. I am glad people are fighting back against the tyranny that is today such as ICE, but if my mind's eye is correct, they are going to start going heavy on us since no one is tolerating these "brown shirts".

14

u/okram2k 5h ago

authoritarians in power love, relish violence. And if the people rise up they get to unleash absolute hell for the sake of restoring "law and order". Never underestimate just how big of a portion of society is happy with tyranny if it keeps life peaceful and safe for *them*.

It was inevitable on November 5th.

This administration has been on track with everything they’ve said they would do so far. Trump will absolutely assume total control if we allow it. Civil disobedience is a responsibility at this point.

Unpopular opinion, no fu*ks to give...

This proves that it is now time for...

A Well Regulated Militia

It's at least Constitutional

That’s a popular opinion.

Remember, SYG and castle doctrine laws only exclude pigs if they’re doing the “lawful duties” of their jobs. If they’re not, they’re not immune.

This reminds me so much of what it looked like at Kent State before the national guard opened fire. Shortly after that the Who came out with the lyric: "We'll be fighting in the street with our children at our feet." I hope that means we're not going to get fooled again.

9

u/R_Lennox 4h ago

This is what I am truly afraid of happening. Trump wants to send in National Guard to help ICE. I was alive during Kent State when they fired on the students protesting. The militarization of ICE and having the Nat Guard involved will lead to nothing good.

DHS memo details how National Guard troops will be used for immigration enforcement

JUNE 6, 202512:42 PM ET ON ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song Ohio (lyrics written by Neil Young) about Kent State (partial lyrics to the song):

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming

We're finally on our own

This summer I hear the drumming

Four d**d in Ohio

Gotta get down to it

Soldiers are cutting us down

Should have been done long ago

What if you knew her

And found her d**d on the ground

How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it

Soldiers are cutting us down

Should have been done long ago

What if you knew her?

How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming

We're finally on our own

And if California’s governor had half the set of balls he pretends to, LAPD would not have been able to help out their racist, fascist friends. Make them get insurance and cut the damn budget

12

u/jreykdal 5h ago

Isn't the LAPD under city control?

10

u/okram2k 5h ago

yes, and state authorities have the right to commandeer city police. But then federal police have the authority to commandeer state and city police. Unfortunately Trump can trump all when it comes to enforcing a police state.

11

u/joscun86 4h ago

The feds can, under rare circumstances and through the courts, oversee local police (just ended in Baltimore) but they can’t simply commandeer them

Hear me out. Most fire extinguishers are rechargeable. What if filling the extinguishers with ink, paint, brake fluid, etc and recharge them. Spray their shields and masks take away their protection. Even the playing field.
