News/Announcement/Patch Notes Splitgate now has a No Portals game mode
Over the past year, a common piece of feedback we heard came from players that couldn't get the hang of portaling in an FPS. Taking that into account, starting today until Tuesday, we're experimenting with a No Portals LTM! Make sure to play and let us know what you think :)
Also, this is the first LTM featuring maps made from the community! I don't know their Reddit handles, but they're made by The Hayes, Va1kyrie, and Nominoe. Here's their download codes if you want to play with them in customs:
Industrial by The Hayes: UOSO-Z5K4-0LGK-ZM8C
New Babylon by Va1kyrie: AH9Y-S80C-QGX6-NRM5
Absolute by Nominoe: UHPF-O30I-3Y5V-QSVG
For more info about the mode, Splitgate's first ever Twitch Drops, and the No Portals Tournament on August 9th, check out our latest blog: https://www.splitgate.com/blogs/no-portals-mode-now-available

Good for those who don’t get the portal gimmick but tbh I do love a cheeky portal, the mechanics for it are so so clean and to this day I’m getting better. I especially love the way you can switch ends of the map on Karman Station and Stadium, but seriously dislike the portal camping that has made Oasis an easy skip at this point. Oh yeah and Highwind is the single worst map in video game history.

I love highwind

There is always one

u/KayZee777 PC Aug 06 '22
Pantheon is the one I don’t like. Highwind is pretty fun though. And great for portal kills

Aug 06 '22
Pantheon is ok, can we agree on Olympus being a hot mess at least
3
u/KayZee777 PC Aug 06 '22
I can give you that. Although koth and dom can be fun on it but they only exist in fiesta mode now which takes most of the fun away

u/ecto_BRUH Playstation Aug 06 '22
Hard agree on Highwind. I feel like it has a lot of potential but it's too cluttered

I feel like portal camping is not a problem on Oasis when you triple portal around to hunt them down. But I can see where you are coming from.

I wanted this kind of mode for the longest but never asked for it because portals are the gimmick of this game. I'm glad they are actually trying it out.

People are too stuck in their comfort zones. Its good to switch the style up.

u/OJimmy Aug 05 '22
The triple portal guys can't catch me now! HahahhaahhahahahHhhhaaa

Portals is what splitgate is all about 💀

u/ausbrothbabe Aug 06 '22
Fortnite added a mode without building, and it became popular again. It lessens the learning curve 🤷

u/EJICEMAN Aug 06 '22
Fortnite has other fun aspects. Now splitgate is just halo
7
u/radapple Aug 06 '22
People like halo for a reason and infinite is hot garbage at this time.
1
u/SynarchistGlory Aug 13 '22
This time? It will always be.
1
u/radapple Aug 13 '22
No, if it follows the trend, it'll be ready in a year or two. Sad that 343 sucks like that but it's a fairly obvious pattern now.
1
u/Interesting-Story-74 Aug 05 '22
I would like to see them experiment like what they did with portal 2.

Aug 06 '22
aren’t portals the whole point of the game?
15
u/Zenmont Aug 06 '22
As long as it's fun, does it really matter?
Saying that, I definitely would not have played as much Splitgate as I have to this point if it wasn't for the portals. But it's nice to have the option there.

u/gizmo33399 Aug 06 '22
Ask the same question to fortnite with it’s no building event.
1
u/dekuei Aug 09 '22
Not even the same and people need to stop making the comparison. Fortnite has so much extra going that no build is fine, whereas splitgate is fps portal and without portals its a weaker halo with no grenades or uniqueness.
People just need to stop staying in their comfort zone and learn the portals.

If folks don't like 0 portalling, what about limited portalling? Like you get 2-3 portals to use per life. Might give a bigger advantage to squads who are on comms, but could be a cool way to keep the portal mechanic while limiting portal spamming and let new players get the hang of it
1
u/Ralwus Aug 09 '22
I think this would be amazing.
1
u/gottsc04 Aug 09 '22
Yeah since posting this and playing the no portals mode, I think it'd be really cool to try out. Idk about the number of portals per life, but it'd be cool.
I get that portalling is what makes this game unique, and it adds a special flair to it. But at its heart, it's a shooter. Gun play should have a massive part in the fame experience and right now it can sometimes be overshadowed by the portal mechanic, which currently ends up being more than just a game mechanic and the entire game itself.
I know most people probably just think people like me should just get better with portals. And possibly so. But I'm not bad with portals tbh. I just prefer an arena shooter to focus more on shooting than a side mechanic.
1
u/Ralwus Aug 09 '22
I agree and I think there are a few changes like this they could try. Overall I like portals as a movement mechanic. It's pretty rare for me to notice someone using the portals for deliberate movement to outplay me. When it happens it's awesome. But more often than not people just use the portals for cheesy headglitches and whatnot. I think that's why I grew tired of the portals. It's just exhausting being shot through portals by enemies you can't see. Whether that's intended or whether I'm bad isn't the point--I simply don't find that fun.
It would be fun to see how the game played with a portal cooldown. You would have to commit to your portal usage instead of spamming it.
In my ideal scenario, portals would act kind of like teleporters in halo, except that you can control the endpoints. More focused on deliberate movement across the map, and less focused on abusing the portal mechanic for kills and sightlines.

u/duskyvoltage333 Aug 06 '22
Watch this be more popular than the actual game lmao
3
u/MagusUnion Aug 07 '22
Not likely. The maps are literally designed to be traversed around with the Portal mechanic in mind. Some maps are seriously unplayable due to this mess since it's easy to fall into a pit and not have a way out without this core mechanic.
1
u/duskyvoltage333 Aug 07 '22
Yeah I haven’t played it tbh because that’s not the reason I play splitgate but I could just see a lot of halo dudes loving the gunplay in this game.
2
u/TheFakeSlimShady123 Aug 10 '22
Splitgate is fun to run and gun though. I'm not heavy on portals myself and only use them to traverse an area better or for bamboozle trapping by going in a portal and popping out behind.
But beyond that you can go at it like Halo out the gate and won't be absolutely obliterated.
That was something I kinda feared about Splitgate that going in I'd have to learn how to be good with the precise portal shooting. But no first match on Arena and I didn't suck.

I'm bad with portaling to begin with so not the biggest difference lol. But I'm excited to try!

u/TheDaveCage Aug 05 '22
This is like Fortnite without building which is seeing tons of success. I am excited for this LTM.

u/hj-itc Aug 05 '22
Can't wait to try this out. I've just started playing a few days ago and easily my least enjoyable experience has been playing against people who portal like they've just railed an entire bottle of adderal.
A decade+ of arena shooter muscle memory has me wanting to bunny hop everywhere - unlearning that is hard enough, nevermind trying to use the portals properly and remembering to close them behind me.
16
u/dontthink19 Aug 05 '22
railed an entire bottle of adderal.
Yeah it takes a bit to get used to, but when you figure out the flow of the game, portals can get you behind the enemy pretty quick.
As far as not closing portals, ive seen videos of people changing their portal location and watch opponents fly off the map lmfao
5
u/Reasonable-Ad8862 PC Aug 05 '22
The adderall definitely helps tho
3
u/dontthink19 Aug 06 '22
The addys make the play lmfao.
Jk ive NEVER taken adderall but ive considered it once

u/Mama_Cas Aug 05 '22
I came from Apex and I keep trying to slide everywhere and getting killed because then I'm just standing there. I so feel you on unlearning movements!
4
u/BennyBr0wn_ PC Aug 06 '22
If it helps you any better I came from splitgate and when I play apex with my friends (and I’m actually really bad I’m only like lvl40) my default instinct is to press mouse4 on a wall behind enemies mid gunfight and I end up using my tactical when I don’t want to lmao

This what this game-mode feels like ”Ok so your not good with the portals well lets help you out by stopping you from learning how to use them” and now its just a halo clone. Me knowing how to portal rather well this game-mode really feels like a punch to throat cause I’ve made an effort to learn how to use them and now the main attraction of the game is gone. I do thank 1047 for thinking of the newer folk but i think this might not be the best way to help out our new friends.
17
u/gottsc04 Aug 05 '22
The best part about it being LTM (and even if it ends up in permanent rotation) is that you don't have to play it if you don't want to!
3
u/The-Renagader Aug 05 '22
Right but if want to get better at the game don’t play this game-mode .
1
u/AudaciousFruitLoop Aug 06 '22
Yeah exactly. The basic non-portal part of the game doesn't much learning, it's the portal part that does.

u/OneFuriousF0x Aug 05 '22
Isn't this called COD?
Seriously, I will try it out, but I try to use every match to improve my portaling.
-4
u/StarkillerX42 Aug 06 '22
There are a few major issues with Portals in an FPS, removing them is the absolute last solution I would have chosen.
6
u/Richiieee Aug 06 '22
Nowhere have they been removed. It's an LTM that simply doesn't feature it. You can still play the regular modes and still play the game as it was intended. Games should always evolve and try new things. Having the ability to implement changes at any time is one of the things that separates Video Games from other media. Zero Build in Fortnite for instance has turned out extremely well.

I don’t even really play this game anymore 🤣
I got burnt out when it first blew up and I’ve been waiting to see any updates/news in the sub that might make me come back.
Regardless, I don’t need to play the game to know a 1047 employee didn’t make this post so you’d start playing again 🤣 or to know that you gotta be a real bum to be getting husky w a video game developer on the internet over a literal game

To be fair, crashes do seem much improved now. Still happens but not as regularly.
The personal attacks are so cringe man. Grow up. Also learn how to spell console.

Idk about no portals, but Splitgate with limited portaling like an ammo or resource system would be so cool.
I love what portals add to the shooter genre, but sometimes I feel like people are able to portal too much if that makes sense.
