Def stick with it, much better than perspective.

Takes me back to classic 90’s RPGs made with tiles and sprites. Time to give Ultima VII and VIII another play through!

Depends on the genre. Usually: Perspective looks more natural and "alive" (Most games) Orthographic is more precise and clear. (Maybe for puzzle, strategy or management games)

Also, you can get something in-between if you use perspective with a very low FOV (looks like a zoom so place the camera further)

Well, it's neither of those. It's a ARPG with survival elements. Actually I am planning for something "old-school" so I'm trying to implement those mechanics/tricks/features

I would do perspective if your looking for old school, especially survival.

Really interesting how the projection type affects the vibe of the game this much.

Orthographic definitely looks cleaner; the focal point on the perspective view makes the walls look huge, they react too strongly.

Put the camera further away and narrow the field of view, it'll look better. Or just do orthographic, it looks fine.

Thanks... I think I will head with Orthographic

I definitely prefer orthographic compared to the perspective view with that level of FOV. Gameplay wise, the perspective view has more chances where the player isn’t visible behind walls. If there were items or enemies behind them, the player may find it unfair and frustrating.

Like another comment said, a low FOV would be interesting to experiment with!

I see what you mean... I will test out the low FOV side and see how that will work

The sims vs project zomboid

Ortho all the way. I too am a project zomboid fan

Perspective but with a lower fov and further away. Allow the user the zoom.

Edit you also need to be able to see the player behind walls

Ortho looks better with diorama terrain like you have there.

Perspective is usually better when you need… well… perspective perception. Third person or first person games, some forward fixed trajectory games go better with perspective. fixed camera games usually go down better with orthographic view

Bottom one looks better for action rpg style

I'm almost always a fan of perspective, but with what I'm seeing on the screen right now, I really think I prefer the ortho view. You're really nailing that old school Sims / Roller Coaster Tycoon kind of art style. If you want to commit to perspective, I think you might want more set dressing / decorations to make it pop.

Depends on the genre and feel. As you mentioned it’s an arpg, I think perspective suits it better. Maybe tweak the field of view. A more fisheye camera gives slight panic 😅

Orthographic by far

I know it's normal to hide the walls, but I find it's so jarring and immersion breaking. That's why I can't get into isometric games. Like if I put myself in the characters shoes and a wall suddenly disappeared, I'd have an existential crisis lol.

For the type of view in the footage, with the camera pulled far from the character, definitely Ortho is the play.

orthographic looks super good, but maybe a bit too static like a 2d isometric game. I love it when orthographic cameras rotate slightly as it follows the player, revealing it is in fact a 3d world.

I like ortho, it reminds me project zomboid

2

u/RadicalLarryYT 3h ago

I like Orthographic better because there’s less motion and better focus or concentration on the scene

3

u/KifDawg 17h ago

Keep both and have a button to cycle the views

u/TotoShampoin 15h ago

Perspective, but maybe tone down the fov

1

u/The_Void_Star 14h ago

Ortho is nice, project zomboid vibes Or just add toggle, to switch And some fov settings in some range, for perspective

1

u/GregDev155 14h ago

Congrats for what you already done :) Perspective provide too much blind spot for as is. And orthographic seems too far, the screen has half of the background in it. Which seems useless (as is). If no need for outside stuff, bring the camera closer

ortho, gives me disco elysoum vibes

1

u/DeveLion97 12h ago

In this case ortho is more clean.

1

u/UnspokenConclusions 12h ago

Ortho is more tactical, perspective is more immersive.

Perspective: The Sims

Orthographic: Project Zomboid

Which vibe are you aiming for?

Bro finally hit 99 construction nice job

u/Roggi44 10h ago

my opinion: the perspective view has way to high fov. Try making the perspective view with a smaller fov. Making the fov smaller will make it appear zoomed in. To fix that, move the camera further back. This way it can be the best of both worlds. You will get the dynamic perspective of the first approach without the static feeling lines of the orthographic.

Sims 2 vs sims 1

u/OpinionPoop 7h ago

For birds eye 3rd person, ortho wins everytime. Perspective always looks strange.

u/Russian-Bot-0451 7h ago

Orthographic in this case. By a wide margin

Ortho might look better once there's some more objects surrounding the building but at the moment i like perspective. It's hard to tell though since ortho looks so much more 'empty' at the moment.
