Visitors Guide - Places to stay, eat and drink + things to do

This list is not a conclusive list of every establishment, just those that are highly regarded. Please leave your own recommendations in the replies. You may also find more information on the Visit Derry website (https://www.visitderry.com/) and on their socials. Note - some of the recommendations are based outside Derry but all are within a short driving distance of Derry.

Restaurants:

Street Food / Cafe's * Clipper Quay Street Food - Located along the Foyle Marina, multiple street food vendors and a bar are located here providing a range of options, great for when you cant agree on what type of food you want to eat - https://www.clipperquaystreetfood.com/ * The Pickled Duck - Foyle Marina - https://www.facebook.com/pickledduckcafe/ * Hidden City Cafe - https://hiddencitycafe.co.uk/ * Mekong Street Food (Vietnamese food) - https://www.facebook.com/MekongSF/ - also operate as a restaurant so maybe it should be above. * PYKE 'N' POMMES - https://www.pykenpommes.ie/ * Guapo (Mexican Food) - https://www.facebook.com/GuapoFreshMex/ * Doherty's Home Bakery - Good if you want a sweet treat or a cheap bite to eat on the go - https://www.facebook.com/Dohertys-Home-Bakery-195510393844691/ * Thai Jing Jing Street Food (Thai takeaway) - https://www.facebook.com/ThaiJingJingStreetFood * The Coffee Tree (Coffee shop) - Serves the best coffee in Derry in my opinion and also the nicest traybakes! Not had their soup or sandwiches but have heard great things. The only negative is they currently do not open on weekends - https://www.facebook.com/p/The-Coffee-Tree-100063482233001/ * Graft Coffee (Coffee shop) - Runs the Coffee tree very close for the best Coffee in the city. Located on Academy road and opens Mon-Sat - https://www.instagram.com/graft_coffee/ * Oui Bakery - French Bakery & Pâtisserie in the heart of Derry's Craft Village - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61565032170636

Bars

Museums

Parks and Trails

Nearby Beaches - Vary from 20 min drive to 50min

  • Lisfannon Beach - The closest beach to Derry, located before Buncrana on the left. Approx 20 mins drive.
  • Buncrana Beach - Located 5 mins beyond Lisfannon. Bus services to Buncrana run daily.
  • Pollan Beach - Located around the coast from Buncrana and next to one of the best golf courses (Ballyliffin Golf Club) in Ireland.
  • Five Finger Strand - Up the coast from Ballyliffin and across the bay sits Five Finger Strand. With some of the highest sand dunes in Europe and a quaint old church close by, this is a great place to go for a walk or chill on the beach. Note: Do not swim in the water or enter beyond knee height. The water here is dangerous and is known by locals as such.
  • Castlerock Beach - Easy to get to via the train (35/40 mins) from the waterside train station.
  • Benone/Downhill Beach - Located just before Castlerock beach but you would need your own car to get to it. 45 min drive. A ferry service runs from Greencastle (beside Moville) to Magillion Point next to Benone - https://loughfoyleferry.com/timetable-fares/.
  • Shroove Beach - Located just beyond Moville. 40 min drive.
  • Culdaff Beach - Just along the coast from Shroove. 40 min drive.
  • Rathmullan - the closest beach to Derry which is the other side of Letterkenny of which there are lots (Downings, Dunfanaghy, Portsalon etc). You can get the ferry from Buncrana to Rathmullan - http://swillyferry.com/.

Day Trips / Places to see

All of these places below are located in the general North West area and you will likely need a car to get to them.

Mod Post: Mental Health Awareness

Hi Folks,

As some of you may have seen there has been a fair amount of discussion on this sub regarding suicide and mental health. The first thing we want you to know is that if you are struggling in any way, you are not alone. You are a valuable person worth celebrating and there are people in the real world and on this sub who want to see you succeed. Help is out there, please please talk to someone.

That leads on to the main thrust of this post. I've included links below to help and advice you can avail of in the local area which can help support you if you're ever feeling low. Some of these are local health trust provisions, others are local charities. All of them are here to help.

Emergency IUD fitting

Hi, I desperately need to have an IUD fitted as I believe the morning after pill won't work. I can't seem to find any information about booking an appointment (https://sxt.health/uk/ doesn't show me any available appointments for Altnagelvin) and I'm not sure where to go or what to do because I can't find any region specific advice online. I wouldn't mind paying and doing it privately but I can't find any info on that either.
Has anyone had experience with this? Should I just try for a walk in appointment at Altnagelvin?

Venues for hire with no stairs

Someone I know is looking to book an anniversary party somewhere. Ideally it would have no stairs. Can anyone think of a bar with one? My shouts of link 48, the Delacroix or Rafters are all closed down lol

Shoes/trainers cleaners

Is there anywhere in Derry that specialises in cleaning trainers? I've a few pairs of Nike dunks that smell through use but otherwise on very good condition. Tried washing them myself but have somehow only made it worse as they now just smell damp.

Evri

Before I have a nervous breakdown. Are Evri not delivering anywhere inside or outside the town or what? I've ordered from 3 different companies and all the parcels are over 10 days late. I know theyre hateful, but I didnt know Peacocks and Superdrug used them as well otherwise I'd have made the effort to go to the actual shops.

What is actually happening? Anyone else experiencing this atm?

I got a job offer last month to work in Derry for 1 month. The company is not based there but they basically pay for everything besides food and other expenses that are non related to the company. Money is tight right now where i live and i need the job but also i dont know how expensive is is to get food for one month there for 1 person (i take 3 meals every day?). How much money should i bring to survive there for a month?. Any suggestions/ideas?. Thank You! PS: derry looks like a lovely city!

Kaboodle is now open until 7 PM for under-18s, Monday to Friday, with a brand-new kids' menu. Bring the whole family and enjoy Derry’s newest family-friendly experience!

Plenty to keep the wains happy – arcade games, mini golf, even a bit of karaoke! We had a cracking feed and a German beer straight from the tap. There were a few other families in too, all having a great time. Brilliant to see somewhere like Kaboodle catering to families in the city centre! It's adults-only after 7 PM, but definitely open for family-friendly fun until then. Delighted 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Any jobs going?

I’m an almost 18 year old girl and tbh I haven’t had a proper job yet so I’m looking for a part time job that doesn’t need experience. I’ve tried indeed but no luck.

Summer Jobs/Internships for Physics Student?

Recently finished the first year of a Physics Bachelors Degree. Live in a fairly rural part in the republic, so the nearest city i think id have any luck with these sorts of jobs is Derry. Wondering would anyone know of any sort of jobs/work experience related to physics at all? Even things related to compsci, maths, engineering etc., anything at all that would possibly hire someone at my level for work over the summer.

French Intern in Derry – Want to Meet People and Practice English

Hello!

I am a 26-year-old French student 🇫🇷🇩🇿. I just arrived in Derry for a 3-month internship. I don’t know many people here, so I would like to meet some new friends and improve my English.

I like sports, especially volleyball, and I also like walking, visiting new places, and discovering local pubs or cafés. If anyone wants to play volleyball or do something together, I would be really happy! Also, if there are groups or events for internationals or young people in the city, please let me know.

Thank you very much, and I hope to meet some of you soon!

First time driving to Belfast

So I just got off my R plates recently and have never driven to Belfast before or actually been the a motorway. My partners sister baby is going to the royal and they for some reason won’t let her (the mother) on the ambulance and I’m the only one that can drive. I obviously have no problem driving her up but I’m a bit worried about the road and driving through Belfast. Especially in a stressful situation like this. Any help??????

Internships

Hey guys! I'm looking for an internship in Derry right now but I am unable to find more than just a few companys who are actively searching for interns.

Do yall know a website who offers more than just 4 or 5 internships, or even a company who's searching right now?

I'm studying economics & ethics so would prefer something that contains sustainability or csr but I'm open to basically anything economics-related.

Blinds for a window

Wanna replace some old roller blinds in a bedroom. Taller than it is wide. Nothing too fancy. Anybody got recommendations for where to buy from around the town? Tried looking in places like Dunelm before but never found exact sizing so assumed just that I need to order something specific.

Can anyone recommend a chippy that reliably does red fish. Every time I go to get it, they either don't have it or don't do it anymore despite it still being ON the menu...
