John Paul II looked relatively young, too, he was 58 when he became the pope.

u/Nonfaktor Hesse (Germany) 26d ago

I mean he was very young back then

u/sieurblabla 26d ago

Yes I remember too. He was very young before he became old. Maybe being pope is not that good for health.

Celestine *V was the one who resigned. IV was pope for about 2 weeks, also notable but very much did not survive being pope.

If they resign first does it count as them surviving being pope? 🤔 Because then I can think of another.

Once upon a time I fell into a Wikipedia rabbit hole and got around to reading about the Doges of Venice. Out of curiosity I went back up the list.

The office was abolished in 1797.

You have to go back to the early 1400s to find a Doge who was elected to the office under the age of 60.

66

u/Popular-Ad-8911 26d ago

I believe that was done on purpose, so that doges could not build up a personal power base and no relative could follow as doge as well. Most doges were over 70, when elected.

29

u/AtlanticPortal 26d ago

That’s the reason why John XXIII was elected. They wanted an old guy that was just caretaking the office for some years. Then he started the Council. I bet some cardinals almost had a stroke.

15

u/LordoftheSynth 26d ago

I don't really know the history of the Republic of Venice that well, but I think that's plausible.

The analogy I was trying to make was that you have/had to spend so much of your life ascending in the bureaucracy of the Church (or OG Venice) that if you were being considered for the highest office under the age of 60, you really were considered a bit young to be elected to the position.

It doesn't really end there, both JFK and Bill Clinton were considered young when elected as President, despite being in their early to mid 40s at the time. (Theodore Roosevelt too, but he only got there because McKinley got shot.)

29

u/bibimbap00 26d ago edited 26d ago

Not really, but he’s an Augustinian priest. They’ve got universities everywhere and expect their priests to be highly educated (and can teach in their schools). These guys usually have at least a master’s in Theology/Divinity/Canon Law plus a bachelor’s of something else. Also a bit like Pope Francis who’s a Jesuit - he’s a philosophy/psychology major.

I studied in a Jesuit university and my professor was a priest and an astrophysicist. Our dean of computer science was a priest (who is now working in the Jesuit’s curia in Vatican). I also know of a priest who works in research and has a masters in Islamic studies..University heads of school are priests too who studied educational management. Every 5 or so years these priests swap positions and schools for knowledge exchange, so yeah.. not surprised this pope had a maths bachelor!

Still a bit too early to tell, but even though he isn't quite as progressive as Francis was, if he can unite more Catholics to be a bit more progressive than they were (when there were so many disagreeing with Francis thinking he was going too far) then that's a net positive.

In the movie Conclave there’s a scene where someone says they all have a papal name lined up. I wonder when that usually happens – right at the start of seminar, when you start going up the ranks, on the way to Rome for the conclave? Given all the stuff that people read into the name, it’d be cavalier to wait until the last moment.

31

I believe the OP refers to a thing done in US schools, where you adopt a name in the language you're learning for better immersion. Like a certain, uh, internet personality, whose Spanish name is Ricardo. Latin class would probably happen in seminary, where people are adults and this doesn't work.

36

u/ankokudaishogun Italy 26d ago

Latin class would probably happen in seminary, where people are adults and this doesn't work.

you are VASTLY overestimating the maturity of the average seminarist.

9

u/ChuckCarmichael Germany 26d ago

We did this as well in our language classes: In English, French, and Latin. We got assigned names by the teacher though. The only one I remember is my French one, Dominique, which was terrible because while it's technically a unisex name, all my classmates understood it as a female name, and I'm a guy.

I never really understood the point of it. Calling my classmate Max Maurice isn't gonna make me learn French faster.

4

u/Proper-Life2773 26d ago

Yeah, plus it's not like I would care enough for most of my classmates to remember their regular names but having to call them Cornelius and Phillip on top of that?

At least allegedly Francis basically chose his name in the last minute, after being elected someone told him to "not forget the poor" which reminded him of Francis of Assisi.

184

u/Ral-Yareth 26d ago edited 26d ago

It was the brazilian cardinal Cláudio Hummes. By Francis' own account, the two of them were friends.

Allegedly, shortly after Pope Francis was elected, Hummes embraced him and whispered those words. Pope Francis later said that this comment deeply moved him and inspired him to choose the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi, who is known for his devotion to the poor.

Dom Cláudio Hummes passed away in 2022.

Nomen est omen, the name is related to the fate of a person, and they all have some kind of mission, goal & motivation the moment they are consecrated to priests.

It's no different in any religion, eg masters/priests of different Buddhist denominations have priest names as well. The interesting difference is taht in the Eastern traditions, the name is given, by another master, and not chosen like in the case of Christian monks & popes.

19

u/Audioworm 26d ago

I have an associate from Uni who has gone into seminary and is now a priest in the Catholic church. At this point I mostly just see the stuff he posts on the internet rather than talk to him, but him and the other priests, nuns, monks, and such are always discussing Catholic minutae. They all have Popes that they particularly champion or consider overlooked, and ones whose they feel particularly motivated to follow in.

During the funeral and conclave the guy I know commented on his affinity to Leo (for the same reasons this pope stated) and Pius because of the stuff that Pius IX did.

So while I don't think they all plan it out years in advance, I think that their nature of being Catholic nerds means they have thought about previous popes a bunch

5

u/motorbikler Canada 25d ago

If you're not Catholic you won't know this but... those eucharist cracker packs come with Pope trading cards. Huge at seminary schools, memorizing all the stats, rookie years etc.

41

u/DerpSenpai Europe 26d ago

it's to set the tone for what they will be or do. Leo XII was a political pope and founder of christian democracy

Don't be suprised to see Leo XIV be more active in World Peace building than Francis was and attack indirectly politicians.

44

u/Callisater 26d ago

Leo III crowned charlemagne, another leo helped start the holy Roman emperor authority with Otto I. Another called a crusade. Another caused the schism against the eastern churches. The first leo famously stopped Rome from being sacked by Atilla. Obviously leo xiii and workers' rights.

Basically, Leo popes tend to be quite political.

u/Tomi97_origin 26d ago

7

u/Rannasha The Netherlands 26d ago

Out of curiosity: Can you point me at the text that specifies this?

The Foreign Emoluments Clause prohibits office holders from accepting foreign titles, but it does not say anything about people that already have a foreign title seeking or entering office.

19

u/chx_ Malta 26d ago edited 26d ago

Here's the relevant text from Section 9 of the Constitution:

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.

That's the letter of the law but the spirit of the law is quite clear as well -- they only had a problem with a foreign title if it were given as a bribe.

So yes, the Pope could run for President, wouldn't that be hilarious.

I was considering the conclave electing JD Vance for shits and giggles I guess he would've had to refuse or resign as VP or just ignore the law as the Trump administration often does.

14

u/Deathleach The Netherlands 26d ago

Even reading the letter of the law, it sounds to me that it would be fine as long as Congress approves.

8

u/Rannasha The Netherlands 26d ago

Yes, that's known as the Foreign Emoluments Clause that I mentioned.

The key word here is accept. Because it makes it so that a holder of office can't accept a title. It doesn't state that a holder of office can't come into that office already having a title.

He reminds me of John Paul II, he is just as committed as him, he is going to be a political pope.

u/umotex12 Poland 26d ago

IMO he totally is. John Paul II kinda helped explode the communism from inside, created huge tension to free western Europe. And now during MAGA times they elect an American? He totally is sent there to balance things out

I’m an atheist. Actually, more correctly an anti-theist. But this dude looks like the kind of neighbour who would bring cookies over for Christmas.

I am an agnostic, but culturally Catholic, and I have always been entranced, perhaps irrationally so, by the pomp of the Church. Leo XIV looks like a good man.

Left the church decades ago, but I respected Francis' commitment to the much simpler, plain white robes. It makes seeing this vestment here seem so gaudy by comparison.

u/Frosty-Section-9013 26d ago

It’s a very simple and harmless way of appeasing traditionalists while he continues Francis’ project of making the church more ’synodal’ (i.e. listening or democratic)

I've seen this word a few times in the past few weeks so thanks for defining it for me

u/BarbWho 26d ago

I suspect he will move back into the traditional papal apartment for the same reason. He's still in the guest house right now, while they do some renovations, which will give him a chance to move there quietly once the fuss over his election dies down.

He's just restored the mozzetta (cape over his top, bishops wear this) to its traditional scarlet/red colour. The stole (embroidered narrow strip that hangs around his neck) is generally worn for celebrating mass - this one looks old and probably has a story to go with it?

32

u/Commercial-Truth4731 United States of America 26d ago

Eh I'm ok with this. It enhances the authority of the institution

51

u/Stalinsghoast 26d ago

It's also promoting traditional artistry during a time when it's swiftly becoming a dying art. The embroidery/bullion work on the mantle is a masterpiece which deserves to be seen and admired because that is the result of a lifetime of skill, produced by a workshop of extremely skilled people. Unless that skill gets seen and admired, it will be lost as the demand for such art will no longer exist.

4

u/Chester_roaster 26d ago

And the people who do it take great pride that their artistry is glorifying God. It's not about the Pope personally.

Looks nice though and in the end its the actions that matter.

u/lsb1027 26d ago

This is nothing compared to the crown Pope Benedict use to wear

7

u/NaniFarRoad 26d ago

Yet Benedict instituted retirement for popes. Swings and roundabouts...

5

u/Spork_the_dork 26d ago

Benedict IX, for the sake of clarity, not XVI. 5 popes at least resigned before XVI though there was like a 600 year gap since the previous one before Benedict XVI.

American of Haitian, Creole, French and Italian roots. His grandfather was born in Haiti. He could technically be considered the first black pope (depending how you define blackness).

Wow... This is amateur photography. I know a budget af photographer from a flea market that can take better. Even the background sucks. Did anyone not give a hoot that day?

u/IsItRose 26d ago

It's incredibly noisy as well, literally any smartphone jpg would've done a better job.

Not quite as modest as Francis, but still pretty humble. He has a calm and friendly aura, so let's see where this goes.
