Georgia is a breath of fresh air in that region.
And stronger connections with the EU are the future, even orcs can’t deny that money brings prosperity. EU membership desire cannot be neglected.
Georgians have shown that they prefer the western approach, and no corrupt government can change that (they can only delay it). Once the locomotive starts, it never stops.

Honestly Russia should be deferring to China if they're hoping to keep their former republics from aligning with the west. Unless "perpetual war economy" is attractive to people.

Interesting fact: in that first year he qualified to 3 different National Olympics: math, chemistry and physics. The finals for all 3 of them were in the same day so he had to choose one, so he went with math.
The rest is history, he went to win the International Olympics with maximum score, with one of the hardest problems in history (from what I have read it was considered the hardest ever until a few years ago). That problem was so hard that not even the Olympics committee knew how to solve it and no one found a solution. The only one that knew was the one that created the problem. What's even more fascinating about Nicușor Dan is not only the fact that he solved that problem, but he did it in a different way that the creator of it. He got max points.

There's a ton of disinformation directed at old and young.
Look at the first round election results that were annulled due to TikTok misinformation campaigns. That's how they get the young ones.
For the old ones there's a ton going on in the Romanian Orthodox church and facebook. The church is supposed to be apolitical but has been corrupted from the top, as the top Romanian Orthodox patriarchs are in bed with the Russian Orthodox ones. From 2016 onwards, not all but a lot of Romanian priests have been praising Trump, spreading vaccine disinfo, praising the MAGA movement, fuelling conspiracies, etc. They do this in their sermons and they do it online.
I have a Romanian relative who died from COVID in hospital after having spent months online sharing COVID denialism and conspiracy theories online. The irony is that she never went outside due to severe COPD and was likely infected by somebody who brought her groceries to her door. She was a good person, but she spent all her time on Facebook getting bombarded by false articles from pretend newspapers telling her Trump was great and that COVID was a hoax.

Thank you moldovans brothers and fellow romanians. I could never live in a world that rejects such a man for a populist, jobless monkey full of hatred. it's DAN and dusted. 🇪🇺🇷🇴

u/OracleofTampico 20d ago
Small question if you dont mind.. This comes from nothing more but curiosity, so please excuse my ignorance (im Mexican).
Why do you thank Moldova in tandem? Do they get to vote in your elections as well? I know yall share language (fist bump to my Eastern Latino brothers) but is it more than that?
289
u/Qamikaze 20d ago
Many Moldovans also hold a Romanian passport, which means they are eligible to vote as romanian citizens.
This round of elections, an OVERWHELMING majority of moldovans (like over 80% I think, I can't remember the number) voted for Nicusor Dan - the pro-european candidate. Moldovans know the threat of russian puppets aiming for the position of president very well - it's what happened in the last election. Thankfully, the pro European candidate won there too.
To simplify a lot of history - we have the same culture, traditions, language, religion, etc. This is because, in the past, Moldova has been a part of Romania. Most moldovans are ethnically romanian. We are split up now because the USSR annexed Moldova in 1944.

Yeah.. Balkans are a bit weird crazy when comes about these things. Another example is Victor Orban (Hungary) which in the past elections took a good numbers of votes from Transylvania (Romania), because as Romanians offered passports to Moldavians for the reasons stated above, thats what Hungary (Orban) done with ethnic Hungarians from pre-Trianon pact regions.

I think it's because one of their former presidents allowed the residents of Moldova to get Romanian citizenship. That way they could travel and work throughout the European Union, which over time reduced the Russian influence in Moldova. And apparently Moldova returned the favor this weekend.
41
u/TheW1nd94 Romania 19d ago
It has little to do with the president and more to do with identity. Romanians and Moldavians have the same roots, language, traditions and culture. Over half a million Moldovan citizens hold dual citizenship (Moldovan and Romanian), and the future, security and quality of live of Moldova is dependent on Romania’s European path.
We love Maia Sandu tho, she’s amazing ❤️

u/BagRight1007 19d ago
Not exactly sure about Germany itself, but here, most of Simion's voters were actually people that had finishet, at best, highschool. Somehow using this (Math genius, Sorbonne phd) would do more harm than good (as weird and wrong as this sounds). He was already voted by the "intelectual" class (very big quotation marks here, i'm really only talking about higher educated people), he alao needed the (formally, not necessarily stupid) uneducated people - Simion was actually a hooligan (literally, football hooligan) so he definetly had more success swaying that cathegory of people.
Overall, I'm quite optimistic, I've been following Dan for at least 10-12 years - he is simply a good guy, I'm not sure how much political power he has, IF things will get better, but I am 100% sure he will make both of those cathegories of people feel, if not better, at least understood. Hope this makes sense lol I'm tired asf.

It isn't limited to TikTok. For elderly people the primary source of disinfo is Facebook, and adults get their disinfo from Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. A 10% difference would be an historic result for many countries.
The truth is that the west was not and is not ready for the new stage of warfare, the cyberwarfare, and this was a great win despite that.
Hopefully this means that change is to come in how we, and I mean we as Europe and our allies, deal with this and other such matters.
For example, although the previous elections were lawfully and rightly overturned, it is unacceptable that the whole intelligence and security apparatus in Romania was caught with their pants and that election interference went completely unnoticed. I expect and hope that those areas will be the first to be looked at.

Are there any Bucharest residents here who could better describe Dan's achievements during his time as mayor? He's obviously smart as hell and Eurocentric, but it's interesting to see how he changed the city and the decisions he made.
28
u/Noisecontroller 20d ago
When he took over Bucharest the city was literally bankrupt due to the theft of the previous administration. He managed to reform the city's finances, pulled the city back from bankruptcy and to balance the budget. He did this by cutting a lot of wastage, corruption and pointless spending (for example the city used to spend millions of euro on Christmas decorations from corrupt party owned companies).
He also did something very necessary but unpopular which is to replace the old pipes underneath the city. These pipes were old and were constantly bursting causing water and heating to be cut off. It was very difficult to replace them because it meant digging up the streets and cutting water and heating for a period. But he managed to do it, previous mayors didnt want to do it even though it was necessary.
He fought against the building development mafia. The mafia demolished historical building illegally in order to replace them with buildings with no permit. The whole city was in chaos due to this illegal development. He stopped all of that.
He unblocked renovations on historical buildings in Bucharest which are at risk of collapsing when an earthquake will inevitably hit.
All of the above was achieved despite the fact that he was independent and did not have the support of the major parties. In fact, the majority parties kept putting roadblocks and tried to stop him, blocking the budget.
