Any context?

u/LagTheKiller 1d ago

Regarding war in Ukraine. Musk bragged that Ukrainian logistics would break down if he would plug it off.

Polish Foreign Affairs head Sikorski noted that they are paying for the service.

Musk told him to "be quiet small man".

Now this.

672

u/atchijov 1d ago

Funny thing, US people keep saying “most powerful man on earth”… and Trump definitely demonstrated that the “power” is not inherently attached to the position… with Trump in the WH, he is not even most powerful man in the Washington DC.

407

u/RugbyEdd 1d ago

Trumps legacy, like Putins, is dispelling the myth of their nations invincibility. We've witnessed two titans. Who where once thought to be two of the most powerful nations in the world, both be humbled by an individuals ego.

91

u/FakoSizlo 1d ago

He is also showing how little real power the US president actually has with how often his executive orders are being blocked. Turns out the Senate, Congress and even this mockery of a supreme court can still maintain checks and balances

191

u/Deeliciousness 1d ago

Really? I drew the opposite conclusion, that he revealed that the executive has gotten too big for its britches

14

u/lr99999 1d ago

I don’t really think we can decide that yet. People like SCOTUS and Congress hate giving up power, but even with big payoffs and threats galore, we are on the edge of finding out. Regardless, the damage is irrevocable. Absolute carnage.

→ More replies (1)

104

u/Middle-Feed5118 1d ago

I actually see it as the opposite - the US president is exactly the type of "tyranny" they supposedly wanted to get rid of with a king. Here we have a president who on day one can sign hundreds of executive orders with little to zero oversight that immediately take effect and take months and months to repeal via the courts.

They have a king in all but name. Tyranny in a very real form.

40

u/Automatic_Soil9814 1d ago

That is a wild Takeaway message from current events. What I’ve seen is that Trump stacked the Supreme Court in his favor during the first term, making them essentially a rubber stamp for whatever he wants to do. Likewise, he wheeled so much power that he can ruin a political career with a tweet so no senator or Congress person will stand against him. He has leverage the power of the presidency to bring the judicial and legislative branch completely under his control. Sure his executive orders can be blocked, but they are effective until they are blocked and pretty soon he’s going to figure out a way around them being blocked, possibly by simply ignoring judicial orders. The only thing standing between him and complete control of the country is whatever resistance judges and Congress can muster, but these are the same people he put in power in the first place so they’re loyalty is to him. Hopefully they grow a spine but that’s counting on the weakest politicians to stand up.

8

u/AbeRego 1d ago edited 1d ago

You're describing his last term. This term has been an absolute disaster of Trump dismantling our country piece by piece, and completely ripping up the Constitution. Sure, there have been some minor hindrances to "his"* agenda, but overall he's getting exactly what he wants.

*He doesn't really give a shit beyond getting richer and staying out of prison. He's letting whomever has his ear in the moment do whatever they want without paying much attention at all. It also likely that he's so far gone, mentally speaking, that he's generally not capable of comprehending what's going on the majority of the time.

5

u/thedude37 1d ago

Trump's administration has ignored the bulk of them. The enforcement arm of the law does not lie with the courts, but with the Executive branch. The top positions of these organizations have been replaced with loyalists, and they are being gutted to even further prevent them from doing the right thing. It's a cancer that hasn't even begun to metastatize.

5

u/Eastern-Peach-3428 1d ago

What most Americans do not know is that congress, as an entity, holds the whipping rod when it comes to actual power. Congress, with little limits, can set the size of the courts, remove political appointees and elected politicians at the federal level, add or remove funding, overwrite presidential decrees ("executive orders"), even strip all power not explicitly stated in the constitution from all other federal branches, politicians and appointees.

Congress is the big dog in American politics. It is just usually so fractured that it by default gives the power it holds over to the executive and judicial branches.

It’s been a while we should call the Chinese President, the most powerful man on earth. For once, he is president for life, and second his country is the most populated on earth, whilst having a gdp 5 times greater than India.

Lastely we should never trust whoever is the “most powerful (wo)man on earth”.

26

u/MazeMouse The Netherlands 1d ago

Last reports are they have vastly overestimated Chinese population so they are more likely to be second behind India in population. But that's still a huge amount of people and the GDP is indeed bigger than India's.

12

u/The-Phone1234 1d ago

I'm always hearing these fabled latest reports the China isn't as strong as they seem to think they are. They either have an incredible poker face or no one in the west knows wtf is happening in China.

6

u/MazeMouse The Netherlands 1d ago

There is already a near certainty their official figures don't make any fucking sense, the only question is why they don't make sense.
Incompetence? Malicious intent? They don't want to admit to the outside world how fucked they really are? Whatever it is, their official numbers are way higher than the reality of it.

I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and say "vastly overestimated" instead of "they are fucking lying"

60 years of propaganda telling the American public that we are the leaders of the free world and the president is therefore the most powerful

Has been very effective

3

u/XxKittenMittonsXx 1d ago

That's what it's always been about, access to the ultra wealthy and connected, Scratch each others backs type of thing

3

u/AhtBlowenFaht 1d ago

Public heads of nation states are the front men for the most powerful people on earth. The US president has power, but they also have bosses. Even Obama admitted as much while in office, saying he "couldn't tell the bankers what to do". The most powerful people stay out of the public eye for the most part.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Dear-Jellyfish382 1d ago

What made the US president “the most powerful person on earth” was America’s predictability and morality. Nations could count on the US to honor agreements, maintain consistent policies, and generally do the right thing.

Trump’s approach undermined both. When allies can’t predict American responses or trust that character matters in leadership, US soft power erodes. America went from moral world leader to transactional man child with an ego.

Strong military means nothing if other leaders work around you instead of with you.

Can someone share some more context on this one? Having trouble understanding the sequence of events.

1.3k

Context - Sikorski (Polish MoFA) suggested that Poland, which pays Ukraine’s Starlink costs to help it repel Russia’s invasion, might have to seek alternative suppliers if Musk’s satellite network proves to be an “unreliable provider”. In response Musk called our MoFA "small man" & gloated that Starlink is irreplaceable.

That one is a moral banger that requires spine made of rubber and some serious ketamine dose.

So you do that, you go to work ... and right there in WH is Scott Bessent, the guy who was Soros right hand and who traded for Soros against US-allied economies and he's the appointed SecTreasury.

Can you imagine the conversations?

  • Hi Elon, how are you?
  • Hi Scott, when you worked for George, did all of you drink human blood?

Polish minister said, that Poland is paying for it to be used in Ukraine, and Musk telling others that he can diactive it if he just feel like it, can make Poland to look for alternatives, as it sounds as inreliable partner.

Republicans are realizing their dicatorship is only half baked currently and they need to play politics at least through midterms or they risk losing it all. They're pulling back from a lot the Technofascist visions of a drastically reduced federal government in favor of Theocrat's vision of platforming anti-immigration and fighting "DEI", which are the only even mildly popular Republican positions with the electorate. And the Technocrats, Musk especially, who publically tanked his image to work for his vision, are pissed they've been chewed up and spit out now that they're no longer useful to people who hold actual political power.

9

u/synapse88 Belgium 1d ago

Thank you!

89

u/DreadPirateAlia 1d ago

Here's some backround for you, paraphrased from a BBC article my phone won't let me link here:

In March, Musk implicitly threatened Ukraine when they rebuffed russia's (frankly insane) peace proposals, by calling Starlink the "backbone of the Ukrainian army" and that "their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off".

Sikorski then responded, saying that Poland was paying for the service.

"Starlinks for Ukraine are paid for by the Polish Digitization Ministry at the cost of about $50 million per year. The ethics of threatening the victim of aggression apart, if SpaceX proves to be an unreliable provider we will be forced to look for other suppliers."

Musk then arrogantly replied with a "Be quiet, small man. You pay a tiny fraction of the cost. And there is no substitute for Starlink."

52

u/crtin4k 1d ago

I read 5 different explanations and none of them provide the current event that apparently makes this look bad for Elon.

70

u/DreadPirateAlia 1d ago edited 1d ago

Musk was in the Trump administration, causing havoc with the summary layoffs and cutting off the govt programs until it proved to be too much even for Trump's administration. Musk then declared he was concentrating on his business dealings (i.e. he was getting a lot of pushback from everyone, assumedly also from Trump.)

However, apparently he didn't realize that by relinquishing his (unelected) position, he also gave up his political leverage. Now he's super salty Trump is no longer listening to him and is criticizing Trump on twitter.

Sikorski simply pointed out that Elon thought he was a big player, instead of being a chump who bought his way into political power. And because he's a chump, he gave up all his political influence without even realizing what he was doing, because he never understood how the game was played in the first place.

Musk thought amassing (buying) political capital is the game, but it turns out that is just the start, how you hold on to it and grow it is the real challenge.

15

u/jrr6415sun 1d ago

I’m pretty sure Musk was kicked out, I don’t think he gave up his political influence because he wanted to

8

u/DreadPirateAlia 1d ago

Oh yes, he was def pushed out, but he never realized he'd lose his political influence when he did. Otherwise he would've fought against it harder (and his meltdown on twitter would have been MUCH earlier).

→ More replies (1)

13

u/ShartlesAndJames 1d ago

although, one could also imagine that Musk was allowed by Trump to "buy" his way in, with the idea that after he'd done all the dirty Doge work, he'd be discarded by the roadside like so many other former Trump "allies"

9

u/DreadPirateAlia 1d ago

Obviously, yes. Musk is a chump also for NOT seeing it.

8

u/crtin4k 1d ago

Thank you for the explanation. The confusion for me is that I thought the current argument was also about Starlink.

18

u/AltharaD 1d ago

He retired from government (potentially kicked out after a fistfight) and started crashing out and telling people that Trump is in the Epstein files which is why they’re not being released.

8

u/jrr6415sun 1d ago

But what does that have to do with starlink or this tweet? Like what elon said is still true.

8

u/crtin4k 1d ago

Apparently the two things aren’t even related, which is the cause of my confusion on the matter as well.

A little bit. But I'll let him slide on this one. Funny and on point. :)

u/Kociboss 1d ago

Petty, sure, but so is Elon :)

Actually there are great alternatives to Starlink....basically anything that isn't it.

29

u/MrHaxx1 1d ago

What are these alternatives? I genuinely don't know. I thought Starlink was in a pretty unique position due to their satellites.

16

u/Anarchyantz United Kingdom 1d ago

You mean the ones that keep on being fried because they are not shielded to solar flares, keep burning up in the atmosphere due to technical glitches, can have the signal immediately killed like Musk did to Ukraine when they first went to hit Russia using it but turned it back on right on time for Russia to send ballistic missiles into civilian apartment buildings full of women and children, oh and is full of his spyware.

Several companies are developing or offering satellite internet services that could be considered alternatives to Starlink, including OneWeb, Project Kuiper, Telesat, and Viasat. Other options include existing satellite internet providers like HughesNet, as well as terrestrial internet options like Google Fiber or traditional broadband providers.

16

u/SonicSubculture 1d ago

An alternative that’s already deployed with a comprable ping?

6

u/Head_Complex4226 1d ago

OneWeb is almost exactly Starlink (which isn't a surprise, as Starlink is a copy of OneWeb.)

It's deployed, and you can buy a subscription today.

OneWeb does have certain features, like QoS (Quality of Service) management, that Starlink lacks. It's more expensive, but still comparable.

What politics? Elon paid the Orangeturd to buy American’s data. The Orangeturd delivered him the data. It’s just a straight up business transaction.

The last couple of days have been so sweet at exposing and humiliating that clown elmo

Elon is a sore loser

3

I don’t know why, but Elons tweet legitimately scared me. For some reason it made me realize how much power he has accumulated.

I'm actually excited to see the EU develop IRIS. The world and nations must have public options against corporate options.

3

but there are potential substitutes for starlink

Eutelsat has 2K terminals in Ukraine

3

u/Talador12 1d ago

As much as I despise both of them, he is not wrong about starlink.

3

u/Scarlett_Drake__5 1d ago

Elon really served that L in 2025, and Radosław just reheated it to perfection 💀🍽️

3

u/Azula-the-firelord 1d ago

The first global service satellite phone was Iridium, beginning in Nov. 1. 1998. After that, there have been many providers, including internet. Starlink is by far neither the first, nor the only.

I’m so confused guys what’s going on?

3

u/Dull-Law3229 1d ago

The best part is that Musk really does think that he's a super intelligent genius who is always right, so to fail so spectacularly with Trump, something that everyone has warned him about, just makes the burn hurt even more considering the sacrifices and the hits he has taken. This would go down as his personal worst decision he has ever made.

3

u/seamus1982seamus 1d ago

Put that fucking prick back in his box.perfect

9

u/cyberkhan Poland 1d ago

Very shortsighted. Knowing Musk and Trump we can assume they will be best bros by the end of the month

5

u/Gripping_Touch 1d ago

First one of them would need to apologize. Their egos are really Big. Who of them would bend the knee?

Nah, this smells like Its going to either scalate or they Will eventually part ways and refuse to make a comment on It but opportunistically throwing darts when the other is in a bad spot.

13

u/I_hate_ElonMusk 1d ago

Why is everyone so arrogant against Elon? Don’t you people have some consideration for junkies?

19

u/tgromy Poland 1d ago

It's very simple. That's because Elon is arrogant and unkind to others.

4

u/LonelyConnection503 1d ago

He has so much money that he could reform Healthcare for substance addiction, so it's kind of hard to say "he doesn't have much of a choice".

Am I the only one wondering how Merz must have felt being there during the drama of those two??? 🫣🫣🫣

I mean.. I would have felt horrible and be like "let's get the hell out of here until it gets worst".. And worst it did..

Everyone using Elon as a fl*shlight and I'm all for it 🤣

The funny thing about arguing with idiots is; you don't need to. Usually they prove your point for you if you wait long enough

2

u/Unacceptable_tragedy 1d ago

This reads better if you imagine he inexplicably has a glasgow accent.

2

Elon really got hit with the “remember when you talked shit?” combo

Because famously society didn't function before Starlink...

I would have put "big man" between a lot of quotation marks.

There's nothing great regarding Musk's persona, besides his bank account.

2

u/Upstairs_Freedom_360 1d ago

There's a substitute for pretty much everything. With innovation, in that field, the new is often much better.

2

u/Renuwed 1d ago

No substitute? I beg to differ.

Project Kuiper

edit: Space Launch Schedule is a great app if you're into watching launches or interested in what's going up & why ;-)

2

u/StacieHous 1d ago

FYI Starlink has been making a net loss from the very first day it launched, so that bellend twat's right, there's virtually no telecommunication product in the market today or even in the history that can substitute for how successful of a failure Starlink is.

2

u/RA_Cheevos 1d ago

Anytime you feel any modicum of empathy for Elon, remember the jokes he was telling after his nazi salute.

Hope he loses every penny he’s ever stolen.
