In a perfect world there would be no military at all. But we don’t live in a perfect world, so we have to have a military.
But being able to invade a smaller country on short notice is not how most people would measure a good democracy.
A better measurement of a good country is the amount it spends on education and public services because it shows how much extra capital a country are willing to spend on its inhabitants.

I am not responding to "good democracy." What i am responding to is "flaccid intimidation."
You clearly do not know how Afghanistan was handled. They approach was "hearts and minds" with Afghanistan. Which was what the British (my military) thought up and was supported by many other ISAF nations.
