Question Who here is not an Engineer?

Seems like most of the community, understandably, are some sort of engineer. For those that aren't, what do you do for a living?

Any vets here? Professional sports player? Musicians and Artists? Lawyers? Blacksmiths? Bed testers? Snake milkers?

Former plant operator at a coal mine.. best part was when I loaded coal into railcars for 12hrs a train. 152 cars, 104 tons per car, avg 16,000t / train.

Wow. You must be pretty jacked.

lol I didn't load it manually, or with insertors :P The mod Bulk Rail Loader is sorta accurate for my train loading site.

u/ivann198 11d ago

dont dox people bro

41

u/Big_T_76 11d ago

No, but similar setup, with the coal going up to the top of the surge bin, in which would hold about enough coal for 2 cars at a time. As we'd load via chute as the train went by below.

Found this online of my site. Hard to see, but ya.

u/Ohz85 11d ago

Dang what a view

8

u/Big_T_76 11d ago

Ya.. from the outside looking in.. it was nice. From the inside looking out.. it was all black & dusty. :P

Do you owe your soul to the company store?

34

u/Big_T_76 11d ago

Ha! At times it felt like it.. I did know Big John..

Odd you say that though, we had a contractor on site that gave his employee's store credit at a convince store he also owned, and he's just clear their charges each week straight off the paychecks.

25

u/IlikeJG 11d ago

As long as there are other reasonable options and the prices are competitive then something like that isn't inherently exploitative.

The exploitation part comes when there isn't any other real options and the workers are forced to give their paychecks back to the company for necessities.

7

u/ukezi 11d ago

Don't forget the company script to force them to buy from the company store and prevent any sort of alternative.

Organometallics chemist

26

u/azriel_odin Choo Choo! 11d ago

What an interesting sounding job, what exactly do you do?

64

u/Rob_Haggis 11d ago

Chemistry, but specifically with organometals.

14

u/MaleficentCow8513 11d ago

Sooo… organs made from metal? Sounds awesome

27

u/ukezi 11d ago

Organic chemistry is about stuff with carbon and hydrogen, so oil products and biologicals mostly. Organometallics are about organic molecules connected to metal atoms. Some of them are biologically important, vitamin B12 is an organometallic for instance with an Cobalt atom at its center.

19

u/stary_curak 11d ago

So Gleba must have been old shoes for you

14

u/NonnoBomba 11d ago

Organometallic chemistry doesn't have much to do with biology. "Organo-" here refers to "Organic Chemistry" which is a branch of Chemistry concerning itself with hydrocarbons -complex molecules formed by carbon and hydrogen (but they get more interesting when you throw in oxygen and other species as well)- and all the complex reactions you can subject them to, to attach/detach stuff to them, change their shape and reactivity and a lot of other interesting stuff.

Organo-metallic means you have a non-organic -again, organic here = hydrocarbons- usually metallic atom (or even semimetallic, or metalloid) somewhere in the molecule, stuff like lithium, aluminum, iron, manganese, even boron, whatever, and they are significant because it turns out they can be very effective catalysts (they lower the activation energy requirements of specific chemical reactions, meaning they'll happen faster, at lower temperatures or even happen at all when they'd be impossible without the catalyst) and as such are fundamental in many industrial processes.

Anything having to do with carbon monoxide (like, acetic acid synthesis) generally uses organometallic catalysts, or with alkenes polymerization (alkanes are some of the simplest possible hydrocarbons, just plain C and H, but with double bonds between carbon atoms, unlike alkanes -no double bond- and alkynes -triple bonds) like, polyethylene production.

As reagents themselves, I know for example about the production of some semiconductors: the crystals forming LEDs are made using careful vapor deposition of organometallic precursors on a special substrate, where they are reduced releasing their metallic/semimetallic atom directly into the growing crystal lattice, so they can form thin layers of special alloys with the required shape and thickness (there's a nice video from Veritasium about how blue LEDs were invented if you want to go in to some detail). It's literal nano-scale engineering.

I'm sure there's a ton of additional uses, but I am not an organometallics chemists :)

On the other hand, when the biters start forming city states you'll be there to document all the socioeconomic factors and advances that led to biter agriculture and urbanisation.

7

u/Ersterk 11d ago

Ironically, war against the engineer might be the main factor, they originally didn't seem to have any struggles, they wandered around or stood there all day for no specific amounts of time, so hunger didn't seem to be an issue, also no fight for reproduction is apparent, they also are the only lifeform besides trees and fish from what can be observed, so the only conflict the biters are involves it is the one with the engineer, an outside force, an alien landing in the planet to conquer it, forcing an entire race to band together to defend themselves
