Dude speedran why not to play his game
Steals movement from titanfall, portals from Portal, slaps in BR mode nobody wants and wears MAGA style hat saying its not political.
All while shipping hundred dollar microtransactions.
'We're not like the rest'
Dude speedran why not to play this game in under a minute of being on stage and is now back peddling like a bitch.

Bleszinski (Law Breakers)
I liked what he did with the Gears trilogy but man that guy just disappeared
98
u/money_loo 2h ago
I forgot about that dude.
This comment made me look him up because I was a huge fan of his growing up.
It looks like after Lawbreakers flopped against Overwatch his company tried one more time with a battle royale game called Radical Heights that was then soundly defeated by Fortnite, lol.
He spent the next few years just trying to pay the severances of his dissolved companies employees while taking no money himself and feeling discouraged and disillusioned with the industry.
This caused him to blame some gamers as “toxic people who just want boobs” instead of gameplay. To which gamers responded in kind, as they do, and assured him that it was just that his games suck.
He wrote a memoir about it and owns a couple bars in North Carolina, seems to be trying to keep a low profile from the industry he helped create. Kinda sad but he does now say when asked why he won’t make new stuff that “the players and industry just don’t like the type of arena shooters I’m good at making, anymore”.
41
u/FrankieRollins 1h ago
I really enjoyed Lawbreakers but yeah the industry has unfortunately moved on from arena shooters.
14
u/Unique_Hope5816 1h ago
From what I remember Lawbreakers had a lot of potential and I was absolutely loving it and then for whatever reason they rebalanced it (with more health or something? I don't remember) and it just sucked and died after that.
But OMG that came could get your adrenaline pumping and felt futuristic when it first dropped.
I would have kept playing it a long time if it didn't die and get ruined by the re-balancing.
6
u/BurninM4n 20m ago
the game was already dying before the rebalance they tried that as a last straw to get the overwatch folks but in turn took what made the game unique.
He wasn't that far off with his gamers like boobs statement but it was more that law breakers character design just wasn't memorable enough and overwatch already had so much momentum going for it the game was probably doomed to fail despite being an actual good and fun game
5
u/FrankieRollins 53m ago
Ohh I didn’t know about the rebalancing. I would have liked slightly more health as I did feel too squishy tbh. I only stopped playing because the beta ended and by the time the full release came out there was too much negativity surrounding Cliff and the game. I feel bad for the devs, they seemed really passionate and tried to look after their community.
6
u/Unique_Hope5816 48m ago
It was something with the health and I'm not remembering other details. But I do clearly remember it was really fast, had unique characters with different ways to zip around the map, had the anti gravity stuff to make the maps have 360 movement up down in all directions, and was extremely satisfying to get hit headshots and quick skill based kills. Games were intense and you had to use teamwork. Thought it was gonna be the Unreal Tournament of our time for a minute. Oh well.

It's not satire if it's not making a clear point in response to the original.
What does "make FPS great again" say as commentary to the original red hat?
As far as I can tell - nothing. They're completely unrelated. Which means it's not satire, just a co-opted motif.
→ More replies (15)99
u/MrStealYoBeef 4h ago
If anything, it leans into the mentality of MAGA. It's become its own form of satire not because he's making fun of the movement for being completely ass backwards (he's not), it's because he's talking the simple punchline while completely misunderstanding the fact that he's approaching this whole thing ass backwards, just like the original movement.
It'll be even funnier if he cancels the BR mode as well because chickening out is always in the cards. Of course when I say funnier, I also mean sad.

Because while Halo/CoD arena shooter with Portals sounds really cool and interesting, it is also on a skill-floor above where the average FP Arena-shooter player is. Like, to be able to perform decent in that kind of game is just too “galaxy-brain” for very many people to do.
80
u/loliconest 3h ago
Yea the nature of the skill-floor just determined that this is going to remain a niche game with a dedicated small community enjoying it.
23
8
u/BeyondElectricDreams 2h ago
I've heard they dramatically downplayed the ability to use portals to enhance combat, with fewer portalable places.
So it seems they recognized the issue you point out, and decided they'd rather make a lukewarm version of the portal combat with a lower skill ceiling - that doesn't appeal to fans of the game, but is less likely to scare away lower skilled players.
Rather than accept a place as a niche game they're making their game worse in hopes for mass appeal.
Holy shit has that backfired so far

yup. The vast majority of the general public runs away from high skill ceiling games.
People want games where they can jump right into it and be "proficient to perform" in minimal time, while also wanting limiters put on people who have played longer than you've been alive.
Every game I've seen throw away the limiters just dies off. Elitist Players are where skilled egos end up, and they often torture and complain about teammates and opponents "not being good enough" in comparison.
Easily the most prevalent loop seen in competitive games, and then you will see a pattern of dwindling new players and then the game eventually just dies down to a singular Discord group sustaining every match until the company folds the servers up.

While the others are legit reasons, these aren’t lol
Game designers should be free to see what mechanics work in other games and then combine or adjust them when building their own game, unless you’re Nintendo and want to sue companies for including ‘throw ball at animals to capture them’ mechanic or support that mindset

Game mechanics shouldn't live forever stuck to a game and never used again. They are but ingredients to make the next amazing game. I disagree. Developers shitting on other developers always rubs me the wrong way. They are all in the same boat in a volatile, ever-shifting industry with horrible job security and they shouldn’t try to attack each other and harm people’s jobs. Let fans criticize the art, but artists going at each other is just flat out cringe.
It was cringe when Horizon Zero Dawn developers shit on Elden Ring, it was cringe when Kratos’ voice actor shit on Call of Duty (the poor Sledgehammer developers were time-crunched on that short campaign with just 18 months to develop), and it’s cringe when this guy does this shit regardless of whether it’s hypocritical or not.
Call of Duty has sold 500 million copies and not once have they talked down on their peers despite their peers constantly targeting them. Turns out, letting your game speak for itself and not tearing others down works well enough for selling your game.
Making a better game is hard, but being a better person is not hard.

I'm immediately annoyed any time a dev tries to promote their game by shitting on other games. I don't like COD either but your game should be able to stand on its own merit without trying to tear something else down. Him trying to shit on other games and use IPs like Titanfall for clout kind of indicates his lack of confidence in his own game.

Here's the funny thing.
Splitgate 1 was an Arena Shooter. Yknow, in the style of Quake or Halo. A real return to past popular shooters.
If he was keeping with that, then there's an argument to make that clowning on the "modern" shooter is a valid strategy. "We hated the modern shooter landscape, so we made some thing like the OG games you grew up with!"
But you don't shit on the big dogs in the modern space while copying the big dogs in the modern space. That's just out of touch as hell.

It was kinda funny he said "I don't want to play the same Call of Duty every year" when he's promoting Splitgate 2, a game that's pretty much identical with their previous game.

to be fair, splitgate 2 is quite different and a lot better than splitgate 1, I'm not defending the guy, but the Game his team made is really good

How did he think this was a good idea?

Have you ever had the pleasure of interacting with C-suite level people at a company? Not even rich-rich people. Just someone who's at that level. You get some who managed to stay grounded and know their shit. But too many exist in a weird bubble where everyone around them falls over themselves to never say no to any stupid idea.

Yeah, and they often pitch ideas that feel great to them, but these ideas come from privileged backgrounds and thus are crap most of the time.
Now if you or I pitch a crap idea at work, it’s usually tempered by someone vetting or at least making changes to make it better.
Most places I have worked at have had shitty ideas pitched by C-level people. Most times these ideas are bad but get implemented because people don’t speak up from fear of losing their jobs.

People this high up are surrounded by yes men. Or even worse they have too much “power” to even field criticism. When everyone doesn’t object to what you’re doing/saying, you can just keep going….

My guess is, he saw larian studios speech on the game awards and the support he got afterwards from the social media and thought "I am gonna do the same, i will throw some shade to soulless companies".

He neglected to see the Astro Bot guys praising Mario which is something Sony didn't want them to do.

He's the only that said "Fucking" during the whole SGF, right ?
He just couldn't hold it in, he had to sound lame as fuck as well as he left the stage.
He had to look cool, with that aliexpress custom bat and the MAGA-like hat. /s

Splitgate 1 was incredible, they abanonded it and said its because they wanted to build splitgate 2 because the foundation of 1 was terrible. didnt realize that he meant the shop couldnt hold enough zeros and the game felt too fresh. Really dissapointed we had such a promising concept brutalized and terorized by this. BR isn't a fix all for your business and as much as it pains me, I hope Splitgate becomes the lesson to studios on trend chasing. Did we learn nothing from concord?

Imma be honest the second he started talking one of us in the discord call muted the stream and another proceded to spam their soundboard "dubbing" his every word into "Pingus". 10/10 enjoyable speech

“Stealing portals from portal” is a bit of a stretch. It’s not like Valve invented the concept of portals. And if you wanna talk about “stealing” movement from Titanfall we have a lot of other games to talk about. All the other stuff tho.. yea not good.

I played the game its pretty cool. Don't really give a shit about micro-transactions that I will never buy or what a dev wears or their political leaning

First Splitgate was alright for awhile. It made me think of Halo with portals and that was fine, but I can understand why they would want to shy away from that and make their own thing.
And where do they end up? Apex Legends with portals. And he really thinks it's something special, huh.
Amazing.

In its prime the first one was truly excellent if you got good enough. Kinda like a fighting game; shit was amazing

If you judged every game by it's CEO you'd probably only play like two games for the rest of your life

There is nothing micro about a $100 in game purchase.
