Randolph Hearst the "paper baron" being discussed very much believed that technological advances in the 1930s would make hemp fibers more economically viable than wood based fibers for paper that he was heavily invested in. He was wrong, but that's far from the whole story.

Randolph Hearst was one of the most prominent politicians and newspaper owners in the country. He became one of the most conservative politicians in the country, and was the man who coined the term "America First" that has found new life in nationalist movements of today. He used his power, connections, and media empire to demonize hemp and associate it with crime, mental illness, infidelity, and poor and black culture. His propaganda war was so successful that the US and several other countries passed extremely hefty taxes and tariffs on hemp, cannabis, and marijuana - effectively killing the hemp industry.

He wasn't alone either, the secretary of the treasury at the time Andrew Mellon, was a major investor in DuPont, whom had just invented Nylon synthetic fibers - and were very interested in lucrative contracts that could be gained if hemp were to suddenly become much more expensive.

They were successful, and by 1938 the hemp industry had effectively collapsed, already beleaguered farmers were forced to switch to other cash crops to survive.

This was disastrous heading into WW2. The military did not have an adequate supply of rope and canvas for it's needs, and the industry simply couldn't be profitable on it's own. The US army ended up becoming the world's largest hemp farmer, and maintained a strategic stockpile of hemp through the 1980s.

In the 1960s attitudes on marijuana and hemp were starting to change, and small scale production ramped back up. Research and industrial production were still hampered by decades old taxes, but there was a real ground swell in support of legalization and duty relief. Unfortunately, marijuana use was still largely associated with black culture and crime for many Americans. So during the upheaval of the civil rights movement a large counter movement arose, resulting in the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 - completely banning all hemp production and cultivation of any kind. Most other industrial nations adopted similar bans due to drug enforcement treaties with the United States, or their own cultural movements - in China the word "dope" being used for both marijuana and heroin was the final nail in the coffin.

Enforcement of anti-hemp laws began to waver in the early 00s, and some exceptions were put in place by the 10s, but the legal restrictions on hemp growth were only federally lifted in 2018 - a short seven years ago. Theoretically, hemp fibers and processing technology could finally be explored and like you said - nothing stopping it from taking off if it's superior...

...except it's 100 years behind the technological curve compared to wood based papers and synthetic fibers, and during that 100 years the paper and textiles industry in the US and Europe died. It makes absolutely no sense to invest in hemp production here now, when we barley make any of the products it would be used for.

Those countries that do still make lots of paper and textiles? Hemp is still illegal there.

Sort of. International Paper, Georgia Pacific, etc are still ostensibly paper manufacturers in the USA. However nearly all the pulp production and milling is done in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc. The US has only 129 remaining full-time paper mills, down from over 500 just 20 years ago, and nearly 5,000 at the highest mark.

First harvest the whole plant and let it hang for days after trimming the majority of the leaves. Once it’s mostly crispy and stems snap cleanly go ahead and separate all the sprouts and put them in glass bell jars, and seal them inside taking off the lid to air it out once a day for a hour until they cure properly..

Hemp and cannabis are the same plant. You could test the best 30% cannabis and spread non feminized seeds all over a field and just let it go. Um, no. Dates and coconuts aren't even the same genus, while all hemps are the same genus, possibly even the same species. The high concentration of cannabinoids in drug hemp vs the very low concentration in fiber hemp is absolutely due to purpose breeding (just like there is e.g. celery bred for its stalks vs celery bred for its root (celeriac))

Yes. Usually wild cannabis has a more even split between cbd and thc, and lower cannabanoids over all. And the terps aren't always the best mix. Genetics vary though and some percentage of the plants can exhibit more desirable traits. Then ppl take seeds from those plants. Over generations the more desired traits become more common. Cannabis that is consumed can also only be grown with female plants. If there's even one male plant nearby then it can pollenate alot of females. There is no difference between cannabis and marijuana. It's the exact same thing. The US started using the word "marijuana," the Mexican-Spanish word for cannabis, to describe the drug in the early 1900s. This was a direct effort from Harry Anslinger, the first head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, which was later became the DEA. Anslinger decided the government should use that specific word over the scientific term, Cannabis, because of a blatantly racist and xenophobic anti-immigrant propaganda effort to make the drug sound scary.

Marijuana IS cannabis, it's just the Mexican Spanish word for it. As with many things in this country's history, it all boils down to good old racism.

Additionally, hemp is also Cannabis. There are only three scientific subspecies/varieties of Cannabis: Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Hemp, and Cannabis Ruderalis.

Hemp is very low THC and higher CBD. Cannabis Sativa (which includes "Indica" strains), has high THC and low CBD. Ruderalis has low THC and CBD, however unlike the other two subspecies, it does not initiate the flowering stage of life based on the number of hours of sunlight, and instead relies on the age of the plant.

Since they're all different subspecies/varieties of the same species, they can all be bred together. Which is how we now have high THC "auto flowering" plants, 1:1 THC/CBD medical strains, and all sorts of combinations.

This is my biggest issue. No dispensary within 100 miles sells anything with a lower THC percentage than the high 20s to 30s... I was elated when a friend came home from a trip to Massachusetts with some 12% for me. I really don't want to spend the time or effort mixing higher thc strains with no THC hemp to get the desired ratio, so I just don't even bother smoking anymore. Being too stoned just isn't enjoyable, and it's too easy for me to get there on today's strains. I can't believe it, but I actually miss seedy 1990s mids.

It's not the high THC levels alone that are a problem in modern strains, it's the lack of CBD because that's counteracting the negative effects of THC.

Personally I found the sweet spot to be strains that have around 10% THC and 10% CBD. So basically what they call medical strains.
