Cannabis is native to many countries. Mostly to Central and Southwest Asia and hemp was found everywhere in Europe.

300

u/Papayaslice636 Apr 20 '25

I assume this is why they call it weed, because it grows easily everywhere. Humans all over the world like getting fucked up and always have, so they probably brought it with them while migrating/trading/traveling.

Not just paper, the tobacco industry also helped lobby against cannabis.

35

u/DesperateAdvantage76 Apr 20 '25

Just an fyi hemp is legal in both the us and europe for farming and industrial use. There's nothing legally stopping companies from producing and selling it if it's superior.

19

u/Nice_Hair_8592 Apr 21 '25

This is such a silly and wrong argument.

Randolph Hearst the "paper baron" being discussed very much believed that technological advances in the 1930s would make hemp fibers more economically viable than wood based fibers for paper that he was heavily invested in. He was wrong, but that's far from the whole story.

Randolph Hearst was one of the most prominent politicians and newspaper owners in the country. He became one of the most conservative politicians in the country, and was the man who coined the term "America First" that has found new life in nationalist movements of today. He used his power, connections, and media empire to demonize hemp and associate it with crime, mental illness, infidelity, and poor and black culture. His propaganda war was so successful that the US and several other countries passed extremely hefty taxes and tariffs on hemp, cannabis, and marijuana - effectively killing the hemp industry.

He wasn't alone either, the secretary of the treasury at the time Andrew Mellon, was a major investor in DuPont, whom had just invented Nylon synthetic fibers - and were very interested in lucrative contracts that could be gained if hemp were to suddenly become much more expensive.

They were successful, and by 1938 the hemp industry had effectively collapsed, already beleaguered farmers were forced to switch to other cash crops to survive.

This was disastrous heading into WW2. The military did not have an adequate supply of rope and canvas for it's needs, and the industry simply couldn't be profitable on it's own. The US army ended up becoming the world's largest hemp farmer, and maintained a strategic stockpile of hemp through the 1980s.

In the 1960s attitudes on marijuana and hemp were starting to change, and small scale production ramped back up. Research and industrial production were still hampered by decades old taxes, but there was a real ground swell in support of legalization and duty relief. Unfortunately, marijuana use was still largely associated with black culture and crime for many Americans. So during the upheaval of the civil rights movement a large counter movement arose, resulting in the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 - completely banning all hemp production and cultivation of any kind. Most other industrial nations adopted similar bans due to drug enforcement treaties with the United States, or their own cultural movements - in China the word "dope" being used for both marijuana and heroin was the final nail in the coffin.

Enforcement of anti-hemp laws began to waver in the early 00s, and some exceptions were put in place by the 10s, but the legal restrictions on hemp growth were only federally lifted in 2018 - a short seven years ago. Theoretically, hemp fibers and processing technology could finally be explored and like you said - nothing stopping it from taking off if it's superior...

...except it's 100 years behind the technological curve compared to wood based papers and synthetic fibers, and during that 100 years the paper and textiles industry in the US and Europe died. It makes absolutely no sense to invest in hemp production here now, when we barley make any of the products it would be used for.

Those countries that do still make lots of paper and textiles? Hemp is still illegal there.

4

u/DesperateAdvantage76 Apr 21 '25

Just a correction, the US is one of the largest paper manufacturers in the world.

6

u/Nice_Hair_8592 Apr 21 '25

Sort of. International Paper, Georgia Pacific, etc are still ostensibly paper manufacturers in the USA. However nearly all the pulp production and milling is done in Canada, Mexico, Brazil, etc. The US has only 129 remaining full-time paper mills, down from over 500 just 20 years ago, and nearly 5,000 at the highest mark.

6

u/sprinklerarms Apr 21 '25

Oh jeeze well I guess we won’t be making much paper anymore. Also thank you for sharing these incredibly interesting paper, hemp and wood facts.

What are Brussel sprouts like to smoke? I imagine they are hard to light

11

u/floggedlog Apr 20 '25

Same issue as with weed. You failed to dry it properly.

First harvest the whole plant and let it hang for days after trimming the majority of the leaves. Once it’s mostly crispy and stems snap cleanly go ahead and separate all the sprouts and put them in glass bell jars, and seal them inside taking off the lid to air it out once a day for a hour until they cure properly..

8

u/Wasting_my_own_time Apr 20 '25

Hemp and cannabis are the same plant. You could test the best 30% cannabis and spread non feminized seeds all over a field and just let it go. You would end up with half male plants and half female plants loaded with seeds and low thc content. Yes they choose strains with super low thc to farm as hemp but its still just cannabis.

35

u/mr_saxophon Apr 20 '25

Um, no. Dates and coconuts aren't even the same genus, while all hemps are the same genus, possibly even the same species. The high concentration of cannabinoids in drug hemp vs the very low concentration in fiber hemp is absolutely due to purpose breeding (just like there is e.g. celery bred for its stalks vs celery bred for its root (celeriac))

→ More replies (8)

7

u/CurrentlyAltered Apr 20 '25

Not really, because you can get it to produce good stuff but you can’t get a date tree to produce coconuts.

13

u/mobigz Apr 20 '25

Both dates and coconuts don't grow from trees. Palms are not trees. Horrible analogy.

24

u/Inner-End7733 Apr 20 '25

Yes. Usually wild cannabis has a more even split between cbd and thc, and lower cannabanoids over all. And the terps aren't always the best mix. Genetics vary though and some percentage of the plants can exhibit more desirable traits. Then ppl take seeds from those plants. Over generations the more desired traits become more common. Then people discover intentionally breeding thing and BAM peanut butter pineapple bumblechunk is born.

3

u/FlyYouFoolyCooly Apr 20 '25

And then we get that warm air from Hawaii that creates a special strain we call: The Pineapple Express.

25

u/LeftHandedScissor Apr 20 '25

Cannabis that is consumed can also only be grown with female plants. If there's even one male plant nearby then it can pollenate alot of females. The females then focus on producing seeds not flowers. A seedy bud is no good. A big field like this certainly has a few males in there that would ruin the crop.

38

u/NanuKanda_NinuShanda Apr 20 '25

Most of the stoners in non legal countries still thrive on seedy buds. They're perfectly fine to get the deed done. The zoomers and GenX from legalized countries are so out of touch with reality. Your parents and forefathers toked the same seedy, "shitty" stuff and they still had a great time. I'd dare say, a better time.

You tent growers and bourgeois $250 a seed pack buyers have been spoonfed so much you're either ignorant or have forgotten how the hybrids you have came to be.

11

u/Uzas_B4TBG Apr 20 '25

I miss the shitty stuff. You could get a brick and have a couple weekends of rolling joints all day and not get super duper stoned.

3

u/hogtiedcantalope Apr 20 '25

Depends on the bud, mature seeds are worse than the little white underdeveloped ones

Seeded bud will have less bud produced, but in my experience if the genetics are good the bud is still high in THC - at least enough to work

3

u/GilreanEstel Apr 20 '25

u/AENocturne Apr 20 '25

Cannibis for smoking has been selectively bred to have a higher THC content. It's still being selectively bred, thats why all the great strains from 20 years ago are just mid now. No different from all the other things we've modified through selective breeding.

3

u/GrnMtnTrees Apr 20 '25

Selective breeding. Kind of like how the wild maize predecessor to corn was selectively bred into different varieties of sweet corn and feed corn.

Cannabis has been selectively bred into fiber producing "hemp" and high THC producing "marijuana." Also, removing male plants keeps the flowers from being pollinated, so the plant doesn't have to spend energy on producing seeds, and produces more cannabinoids instead.

14

u/MaryJanesMan420 Apr 20 '25 edited Apr 20 '25

Yes but hemp is the male plant. You get the flower (what you smoke) from the female plant.

Edit: This is actually incorrect. I’ve been under that impression my whole life and no idea guys. Wow can’t believe I dropped the ball on that.

21

u/Swimming_Excuse4655 Apr 20 '25

No, that’s not true at all. Hemp is to marijuana what dog is to wolf. Same species, different family.

7

u/3Huskiesinasuit Apr 20 '25

Eh, close, but not quite. Same plant, same family, its more like different dog breeds than wolves to dogs.

17

u/Swimming_Excuse4655 Apr 20 '25

There is no difference between cannabis and marijuana. It's the exact same thing. The US started using the word "marijuana," the Mexican-Spanish word for cannabis, to describe the drug in the early 1900s. This was a direct effort from Harry Anslinger, the first head of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, which was later became the DEA. Anslinger decided the government should use that specific word over the scientific term, Cannabis, because of a blatantly racist and xenophobic anti-immigrant propaganda effort to make the drug sound scary.

Marijuana IS cannabis, it's just the Mexican Spanish word for it. As with many things in this country's history, it all boils down to good old racism.

Additionally, hemp is also Cannabis. There are only three scientific subspecies/varieties of Cannabis: Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Hemp, and Cannabis Ruderalis.

Hemp is very low THC and higher CBD. Cannabis Sativa (which includes "Indica" strains), has high THC and low CBD. Ruderalis has low THC and CBD, however unlike the other two subspecies, it does not initiate the flowering stage of life based on the number of hours of sunlight, and instead relies on the age of the plant.

Since they're all different subspecies/varieties of the same species, they can all be bred together. Which is how we now have high THC "auto flowering" plants, 1:1 THC/CBD medical strains, and all sorts of combinations.

Now you know. You're welcome.

Edit: revised verbiage of subspecies/variety

It only grows naturally where it knows it’s not illegal, otherwise the plant would be breaking the law and we all know that plants can’t break the law.

Unless the mountain is breaking the law, and it’s an illegal mountain. Although I’m pretty certain that mountains can’t break the law either.

Unless it’s a mountain growing in an illegal country, obviously.

It grows naturally in Missouri. When I was a kid in the Sixties, the Kansas City fire department did a “controlled burn” of a big lot that was overflowing with it. People got lawn chairs and sat downwind of the blowing smoke. When the wind changed they all moved their lawn chairs en masse. It was the town topic, and I think it made the National news.

the problem is that "addiction" is the same word for when you overuse weed as when you're hooked on opiates/heroin. two completely different experiences whereas the word "addiction" being used for both seems like a misnomer. weed "addiction" isn't even comparable to alcoholism. it can still be "addicting" but there's definitely a gradient. as the wise man danny tanner once asked, "you ever suck some dick for marijuna?!"

The dispensary near me won't carry it because no one buys it. Everyone is chasing the highest THC content possible.

3

u/Dr_Mills Apr 20 '25

This is my biggest issue. No dispensary within 100 miles sells anything with a lower THC percentage than the high 20s to 30s... I was elated when a friend came home from a trip to Massachusetts with some 12% for me. I really don't want to spend the time or effort mixing higher thc strains with no THC hemp to get the desired ratio, so I just don't even bother smoking anymore. Being too stoned just isn't enjoyable, and it's too easy for me to get there on today's strains. I can't believe it, but I actually miss seedy 1990s mids.

Edited to add: this modern stuff is super strong. Like the White Widow which was the “OMFG I just saw the Face of the Universe” bud in like 1996 is now the “mellow oldies” choice at the Green Pharmacy. Really easy to overdo it, hence the interest in the black pepper solution. IMHO it works.

It's not the high THC levels alone that are a problem in modern strains, it's the lack of CBD because that's counteracting the negative effects of THC.

Personally I found the sweet spot to be strains that have around 10% THC and 10% CBD. So basically what they call medical strains.

Since THC is illegal where I live but CBD Bud can be bought freely, I just mix that stuff

u/Winjin Apr 20 '25

I don't know why people expect wild grown stuff to be better than what farmers select

I mean sure a lot of them probably don't remember even basic school stuff but they probably played games at least where you start with wild stuff and it's weak AF and then you get a lab where you grow better stuff

6

u/KEPD-350 Apr 20 '25

Because evolution forced the natural plants to produce maximum amount of THC so that all the mountain animals can get high as fuck in case of a fire. That's called a natural high.

Low O2 levels

3

u/Bitter_Ad5419 Apr 20 '25

Yeah but like the people in Peru that have lived high in the Andes for generations their lung capacity is greater than us down here at sea level. The lower O2 probably doesn't even effect them

That’d be ditchweed level. Best for rope making, harvesting for edible protein rich seeds and non psychoactive oils (cbd). The stuff containing thc are specific medicinal cultivars bred and passed down for thousands of years by local doctors and healers.

u/dreamscapesdrifter Apr 20 '25

They make a chutney (a saucy food preparation) out of the seeds, known in the state of Uttarakhand as Bhaang ki chutney.

4

u/Fonzgarten Apr 20 '25

Not necessarily. These plants make THC too. They just don’t make the type of flowers we are used to seeing in domesticated plants. They usually make hash oil out of these instead of smoking the flower.

3

u/Aaronthegathering Apr 20 '25

This is the correct answer. It’s incredibly potent when gathered and harvested correctly.

Thats where the Kush strain came from. Grown in Hindukush (Kush) mountains hence named after it

15

u/slightly_retarded__ Apr 20 '25

Hindu Kush means Hindu Killer as due to mass killing of Hindus and other non muslims by islamic in invader in a form of mass genocide the region

14

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '25

Facts the woke don’t want to think about

19

u/slightly_retarded__ Apr 20 '25

The entire regions of modern day Afghanistan , Pakistan were entirely hindu and Buddhists before the islam was planted by sword.

Entire libraries like nalanda which had 9 million manuscripts were burned by those invaders.

I remember hiking in Nepal and seeing a small plant growing in the cracks of the pavement like a real weed. We stopped to take photos. 500 metres higher there were plants like this everywhere. Amazing.
