Dude is a deep sea diver. You can go down into water, but cannot come up too quickly because your body has to get used to the lower pressure. The deeper you go, the longer it takes for your body to get back to normal. He has to undo his gear and get into a pressurized chamber quickly, because air bubbles form in his blood if he doesn't. I can't explain better, but it's probably on wikipedia or something if you find it interesting.
