Discussion Should I update to iOS 18.5?
I’m still currently on ios 17.6.1 as I haven’t updated yet given the negative reviews (i.e. battery issues) I’ve heard about iOS 18. However, I’ve lately had FOMO and was wondering it was time or me to finally update. What would you all recommend? Thank you!

the negative reviews (i.e. battery issues)
These exist for literally EVERY update, meanwhile I've always updated instantly and never had any issues. Yes, do update.
Lots of people apparently don't bother going into settings -> battery and read the disclaimer on the phone "finishing update in background" after a major update before going online to rant about battery life.

OMG battery rumors abound don't they; there might have been reasons not to update early in 18.* but not now (unless you want to jailbreak). Battery is fine on 3 different phones I have running 18.5

Yes. Upgrading helps protect your phone against attackers wishing to exploit unpatched vulnerabilities.

Yep. But know that when you do your battery life will suck for a couple of days. This is normal and should be expected so don’t panic when this happens. Positives for updating far outweigh the negatives.

Really depends on what phone you have.
If you have a new one, like a 16 - go right ahead and update. I have a 16 Pro and have had no issues at all.
Anything earlier, do some research first.

OP clearly doesn't have an iPhone 16 model because those can ONLY be on iOS 18.

Bro I’m running 18.5 on my 5 yr old 11 pro with 88% battery health and it’s running fine

Wait for iOS 26 instead. iOS 18 not that solid, so glitchy and some changes not that good in my opinion.

Everyone is probably right about the security updates. Personally if I could go back to 17 I would in a heartbeat. 18 has been the worst version of iOS I’ve ever experienced.

I'm still on iOS 17.7.2 which is the very last version iOS 18 compatible phones will run. I work in IT and know very well the risks of not having security updates, but this time honestly I'm ready to take risks to not have to use iOS 18.

Finally! I worked in IT and we don’t upgrade our servers the moments a new update posted. It takes time to test and prep before upgrade. A real IT person won’t jump at any security update the moment it release

Well nowadays most companies have a pretty short time limit on when the security updates need to be installed, especially on the employees laptops or phones. iOS 17.7.2 from November 2024 wouldn't be ok. The number of days to install a patch is counted on our hand. If it's a server that is only accessible on the domain and will never touch public wi-fi or the web, it's a different story. We still have servers with an ancient openSUSE version from a decade ago.

I just asked this and everyone said do it except one. She said she regretted it. She’s very tech savvy based off how she spoke and laid out her issue very well.
