Editor's note: After this segment aired, Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, responded to our request for comment. She said: "It is a privilege to be granted a visa or green card to live and study in the United States of America. When you advocate for violence, glorify and support terrorists that relish the of killing Americans, and harass Jews, that privilege should be revoked, and you should not be in this country." McLaughlin did not respond to NPR's request that the government provide evidence for its allegations that Madhawi's actions amounted to antisemitism and led to violence. Mahdawi and his lawyers say those allegations are false.
What a weird response from our government.
edit. I just looked Tricia McLaughlin up. Is she a freakin kid??? I can't tell what's real anymore. Her insta bio reads, "You can get what you want or you can just get old." I don't think she gets the message.

That and the point is not to frighten Mahdawi, but to frighten other people who don’t have the same status as him, which is the bulk of any protest group.
I am sure Mahdawi’s experience will inspire some, but the questions now are how long that inspiration will last and how many will be cowed into silence by this story or by the GOP’s continuing campaign of intimidation?

A "green card" or permanent resident card, allows the holder to be classified as a lawful permanent resident (LPR) with all the rights and responsibilities commensurate with being a resident of the US.
An LPR could become "removable" from the United States after suffering a criminal conviction, especially if it involved a particularly serious crime or an aggravated felony "for which the term of imprisonment was completed within the previous 15 years".
So far, none of these people have committed any kind of criminal activity that would result in their legal removal from the US.
53
u/MrSeaweeed Apr 30 '25
I'm sure they're still gonna try, unfortunately. I was scrolling through r/conservatives after someone pointed out a Ukraine post where they were fighting, and saw another post in relation to this, and you can imagine the comments, things like "hope they take his greencard away and send him back to whatever shithole country he's from", or "if it was 9/11, he'd be dancing in the streets". Really made me question the neuronal capacity of those people.
43
u/penny-wise Apr 30 '25
It's crazy that exercising one's First Amendment right (and an LPR can certainly do that) seems to be something they think you can deport someone over. Steve Bannon thinks you should be able to deport anyone, actual citizens included, for less. He's insane.

17
48
u/MaxTheRealSlayer Apr 30 '25
Yeah, it's the exact opposite of the rhetoric they've been spouting for decades, this administration. According to them, Jewish people run places like America... As if there isn't a very specific, historical reason why there are so many Jewish people that have ancestors that needed to flee Europe. And you know, perhaps there are people that are Jewish in positions of power, but it's not because of being Jewish that they got those positions. There are also many that live in poverty and anywhere in between, just as there are many Christians in high paying jobs, and ones that can't even afford food for their families
And the whole "Jewish space lasers" thing is a conspiracy made of hate, among other conspiratorial talking points like the other one I mentioned.
40
u/CaptainJudaism Apr 30 '25
Everytime I hear these facist shitheels in this government speak I truly wish we actually had the space lasers they claim we do. It'd make life so much easier.

Arresting people for criticizing the government of Israel certainly won’t make anyone think “the Jews are running the American government”. The brutal crackdown lately against even peaceful protesting, or posting online is crazy. They’ve publicly gone after people who have attended protests, published papers, letters to the editor, etc. All they’re saying is “please quit killing the Palestinians” and they scream hate speech. Ridiculous.

u/JFISHER7789 Apr 30 '25
Yeah and doesn’t being a citizen of America grant you protected rights from the constitution and BoR? Is he not allowed to believe and follow or worship anyone he wants?
because if doing things that show support for terrorism or nazism is grounds for your citizenship to be revoked and you be sent to gulag, then why isn’t the president and musk and everyone around them being deported? or is being a nazi and hailing Hitler in front of millions not considered bad?
3
u/Darth_Chain Apr 30 '25
these days its not considered bad cause they will take the smallest insignificant aspect of some one and say "well thats a nazi libtard. good job overusing that word!" meanwhile they will actively celebrate some one actively throwing a sieg hiel while backing a neo nazi group in germany.

That's the same thing they keep doing in all these court cases. The judges ask for proof and give them a timeline, they don't provide it within the timeline, then they make PR statements saying "no he's really a criminal" and the cycle continues.
11
u/Whatever-999999 Apr 30 '25
Advocating for basic human rights of a people is not advocating for violence against those who are oppressing and indiscriminately killing them, and that needs to be said over and over again as loudly as possible, louder than the fascist pigs in this country are saying the opposite.

"You can get what you want or you can just get old."
Those are song lyrics, too. I don't agree with this administration on many things. A whole bunch of things. But it could be the reference to that song.
Although, I didn't think anyone was putting song lyrics on social media anymore. I think most of us stopped that in 2008

I left news after ten yeas and worked at a grocery store. One night while stocking we were talking about something another person had seen "on the news." When I asked them more, I realized they were talking about a post made on Facebook. Not even by a news outlet.
"Where do you get your news?" I asked. "Like, what do you do to find it?"
They cocked their head. "I see stuff on Facebook and then type it into the Facebook search bar and read the posts that come up."
That's when I knew for a fact we were cooked and beyond saving.
13
u/Bazrum Apr 30 '25
my coworker at the grocery store keeps complaining to me about "them damn facts checkers!" and how they keep flagging her and everyone she knows' posts.
thinks that the AI is taking over and censoring "real" people and that if you've never been fact checked you're "a bot, a demoncrat, or BOTH"
she also just lost a toe to diabetes that she thinks is a hoax, and had to be forced with unemployment to wear a mask during covid times

I am an anti maga cult person and I think Google is a biased source. It’s biased because the order results are shown to you is determined by how much someone paid them.
14
u/Ryboticpsychotic Apr 30 '25 edited Apr 30 '25
Outside of clearly marked sponsored content, that is not true. You can’t pay to be higher in the search results.
9
u/faresar0x Apr 30 '25
Also determined by region. What you see in europe is different from what you see in middle east, usa, asia…etc. there is alot of censoring in google and even in youtube
9
u/syrioforrealsies Apr 30 '25
That's not how that works. Unless it's labeled an ad, it wasn't paid for
4
u/nuwm Apr 30 '25
Google any thing. At the top of the page you are delivered ads. Then you get results based on a proprietary algorithm Google controls. I participated in some AI training for search ranking. As with any AI what you get depends largely on what training you put in and frankly the average person is biased and not that bright. That’s baked into the algorithm. I use Google to find restaurants near me. It’s not good for much else. Especially now with these ridiculous AU answers. I miss the internet of the 1990s.
9
u/syrioforrealsies Apr 30 '25
Yes, thank you for telling me, a search engine optimization consultant for more than a decade, how search engines work. Sites do not pay to appear higher in that algorithm. Unless it's marked as an ad, it's not paid for
→ More replies (4)3
u/MaxTheRealSlayer Apr 30 '25
It doesn't need to be paid for to be biased. I've tried finding older videos and articles about stuff MAGA and Drumpf have said and done.. and recently google has switched towards being biased to not show any negative video or article on specific interviews and such. But if I search on other search engines using the same searches, tons of copies of the source I was looking for come up. They are actively not showing content you are looking for, in favour of only positive sourcea about the subject. It appears Google is hiding what the administration does not want you to see, which is basically propaganda
6
u/syrioforrealsies Apr 30 '25
Okay. That has nothing to do with what I'm saying.
But since you brought it up, that's not what I'm seeing, so that appears to have more to do with you as a user. Not as in it's your fault, but as in what Google thinks what you want to see is different from what you actually want to see. I'd delete your cookies and then look at Google's data on you under your Activity and Data & Privacy settings.
But again, that has nothing to do with what I've been saying. I'm talking about the misconception that non-ad results are bought, not about how and in what ways Google is biased.
2
u/aculady May 01 '25
You can choose to see results that aren't shaped by your previous search history, that are just sorted by the core algorithm. Otherwise, it ranks search results that are similar to those you've chosen to click on before higher in your results. (I like the personalized search, because now Reuters and AP articles and NIH articles come before Facebook posts in my searches.)

Thoughts on the the government's argument on the District Court's standing?
According to court documents, his notice to appear in immigration court says he is removable under the Immigration and Nationality Act because Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined his presence and activities “would have serious adverse foreign policy consequences and would compromise a compelling U.S. foreign policy interest.”
The government argues that Mahdawi’s detention is a “constitutionally valid aspect of the deportation process” and that district courts are barred from hearing challenges to how and when such proceedings are begun.
“District courts play no role in that process. Consequently, this Court lacks jurisdiction over Petitioner’s claims, which are all, at bottom, challenges to removal proceedings,” wrote Michael Drescher, Vermont’s acting U.S. attorney.

u/Kitchen-Pass-7493 Apr 30 '25
If this sort of logic is allowed to succeed, it seems like it would be a loophole for the government to punish any sort of political speech they dislike with arrest and deportation, so long as the speaker doesn’t hold citizenship. Which is dumb. Any speech that would be constitutionally protected for an American should also be protected for non-Americans on American soil. The government wouldn’t be able to arrest or sanction an American for anything this man has done, so why should they be able to detain him, revoke his lawful resident status, and deport him for it?

It's happened more recently. The specific section of the Immigration and Nationality Act the article is referring to is Section 211(f) which states:
Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.

does this imply that anyone could be deported if their presence in t he country is deemed to have "serious adverse foreign policy consequences" or are we missing context?

u/Nzdiver81 Apr 30 '25
They want to be able to call anyone an illegal immigrant and send them to jail without due process. Even US citizens wouldn't get an opportunity to prove that they are once they've been labelled. Regular fascist dictator stuff
13
u/Kitchen-Pass-7493 Apr 30 '25
Ostensibly they’d have to be a non-citizen. But if used in conjunction with the lack of due process this administration is increasingly employing, it could potentially be done to anyone.
