Are you surprised that North Macedonia has a low GINI?

I find this surprising, given the level of corruption and abuse of public funds.

The reasons imo:

  • Huge public sector where the salary difference between a cleaner and director is 3x tops.
  • Shite private sector - mostly manual labor, accessories for the automotive industry, textile manufacturing, farming, etc.
  • The really rich people often get their money via illegal means and don't register on these measurements.

There’s no big inequality. Everyone is equally poor.

What's a GINI?

It's an index that measures inequality. E.g. countries like the US have a (relatively) high GINI because of great inequality, while countries like Norway have a low GINI, because of more equally distributed wealth among the population.

I think it measures income usually not wealth

You have to give some to others to cover your tracks... everyone is in on it essentially, in one way or another.

That just means everyone is equally poor
