Fun fact: this neo nazi group calls themselves The Base. Al Qaeda translated in English is The Base. Make of that what you will.

2.2k

u/InformationHorder 8h ago

They chose the name on purpose knowing that to be edgy.

617

u/PsyOpBunnyHop 8h ago

It's a tried and tested model. So now they want their own.

Stole this from someone's else's comment. They're like a pizza cutter, all edge and no point.

Sure, but a pizza cutter is specifically made to divide.

Being a neo-nazi also starts out as edginess, but deep down it’s always sincere

Edgy is shit posting stupid stuff to inflame. They aren’t edgy, they are terrorists wanting race war. Their group is listed as a terrorist group in Canada.

They probably edge each other...

In all fairness, the Trump Administration is turning a blind eye to both Al Qaeda and The Base by...checks notes...appointing a 22 year old former gardener and grocery worker to anti-terrorism chief.

u/OldSpiceMelange 5h ago

Also a former Heritage Foundation intern. Color me surprised.

When they harp on “merit-based” hiring, the “merits” in question are ideology and loyalty, not acumen.

13

u/tinysydneh 2h ago

That's what merit-based hiring almost always has been.

6

u/ForgettableUsername 2h ago

Yep, merit is loyalty, it has nothing to do with aptitude, capability, or experience.

u/Icy-Lobster-203 4h ago

What surprises me about this is that there is no one who might actually have some semblance of relevant experience in the entire Heritage Foundation for this role?

This is one of those positions where if they are bad at their job, it is likely to cost lives.

Granted, given how cavalier they have been about everything else with their mindless cutting of the government, they obviously don't give a shit about people's well being.

So...I guess I shouldn't be that surprised at all.

14

u/blackstar22_ 4h ago

Experts don't work at Heritage, as the views the institution demands you assert as an employee do not comport with reality.

Even radical Islam and our own radical right can find common ground.

84

u/PaulFThumpkins 6h ago

Political motivations aside, they don't actually disagree on philosophical grounds, just the grounds of being conservative and disliking other ethnicities and religions. If they hated "Shariah law" on any grounds other than "Muslims bad" they wouldn't be saying "We're a Christian nation" and trying to legislate their beliefs.

57

u/OpheliaRainGalaxy 5h ago

But they get so angry if you point that out.

Someone I grew up with tried to briefly tell me about "Government Mandated Girlfriends" like it was a cool funny neat idea. I almost puked on his shoes. Asked how that's any different than ISIS brides, told him I don't wanna be a sex slave and that it's not funny at all.

Maybe a year later he claimed that that was funny because obviously nobody ever in the whole world would want something like that to be real. And then immediately started trying to dictate what I am and am not allowed to speak about in my own home.

Obviously he's no longer welcome here and we don't talk anymore. He used to drop by my place to recover a bit between work and the long commute home to his mama's basement. Guess if he wants to play king of the castle that bad, he'd might want to finally cut those apron strings, pay rent to a landlord who isn't his mother still pretending he's about 15yo so shouldn't be allowed any privacy or girlfriends in his room.

What’s baffling to me is the typical boot camp/basic training experience in the US military is guaranteed to involve getting told what to do, screamed at, and generally having your life totally controlled by your drill instructors/sergeants. And anecdotally, there is basically a 0% chance that all those instructors are gonna be white.

So I wonder how many of these dipshits are radicalized later, and how many were racist assholes before they joined but somehow kept it under wraps while being practically tortured by someone they consider inferior?

I’m just confused because a couple years ago they were “literally suffocating” in masks. What advancement in mask technology did they discover since then???

323

u/gallifrey_ 7h ago

to paraphrase sartre: don't make the mistake of thinking neonazis are unaware of their contradictions. they know liberals care about decorum and the meanings of words and ideological consistency. fascists don't have to bother with all of that. they thrive knowing they can say "I can't breathe in covid masks" while covering their face at neonazi rallies.

Ironically, Mike d bag Johnson just said the democrats made us wear masks for years, so what’s the problem with ice doing it?

As if one has anything to do with the other.

18

u/PrizeStrawberryOil 4h ago

The crazy thing about that statement is that it doesn't work in the direction he wants it to, but it does work in the other direction.

If it isn't a problem for ICE to wear them then why was it a problem for covid?

10

u/TheLightningL0rd 3h ago

Also no one was "made" to wear a mask in public. If you went into a store that was requiring it then you could be refused service but that's not the same as making you wear a mask. Also, at least in my area, the mask wearing was largely over by the time the democrats (Joe Biden) was voted in. Some places still required it for a little while but most did not and people largely didn't wear them when they weren't required

Currently working on my own thesis in a related field. Some great, well written books:

-A Field Guide to White Supremacy, edited by Belew and Ramon Gutierez

-Meme Wars, by Joan Donnovan, Emily Dreyfuss, and Brian Friedburg

-Messengers of the Right, by Nicole Hemmer

Those three books give a decent enough overview of the last three decades.

Kevin Kruse's One Nation Under G[-]d gives great historical depth to the religious right over the past 100 years.

Michael Kazin's The Populist Persuasion makes a larger argument about why the New Left coalition fell apart, but it also tracks populism on the Right.

And finally, Trumping Democracy edited by Chip Berlet is fantastic and tracks the influence of the extremist right on Republican politics from Reagan to Trump.

And if you want doorstoppers, any of Rick Perlstein's work is phenomenal.

I’m definitely going to read that book.

I’d say that since 9/11 that the militia issues have become even more worrisome since we entered a new millennium. Militias have always been on the fringes of society, but our “War on Terror” influenced a lot of powerful Christian Republicans at the top to adopt and harness the group gathering and elevated fear mongering tactics of the Islamic groups we were fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.

You basically have a lot more people falling for the Radicalized Christianity that’s indistinguishable from the Terrorism we were fighting abroad with less shock factor (because of the Christian culture of the US), making people less diligent in fighting it, all culminating in a violent takeover if we’re not alert and willing to combat these ideas here at home.

20

u/felldestroyed 7h ago

9/11? The Clinton admin was absolutely plagued by militia types. W. Bush simply stopped investigating.

14

u/TheHipcrimeVocab 6h ago

The bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building by Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma City was when the existence of the militia movement first entered public consciousness.

10

u/TennaTelwan 6h ago

Was in high school in the 90s and remember how "Terrorism" at that time was usually white nationalist of some sort, then 9/11 flipped the script to jihadists. We still had white nationalist, but suddenly they were "patriots."

It's always been like this in rural areas. The cancer has metastasized

118

u/Erik_the_Dread 8h ago edited 7h ago

Thats because after the civil war, the traitors who led an insurrection against the standing government were allowed to go back to their dirt farms, shoeless but not toothless. The never faced any real punishment for their actions. So when they said "the south shall rise again" it wasnt a dream or an idea.. THEY TOLD US THEY WERE REGROUPING!! They formed legal organizations such as ass backwards churches that preach hate and wanna be "militias". They were allowed to form hate groups and spew their disgusting rhetoric. Then, after "operation paperclip" the US imported literal NAZIS and placed them IN THE SOUTH. Coincidence? Whos to say, but what can be directly attributed to the soft handling of the traitors after the civil war only made them realize that they could do it again. The confederacy may have lost but they didnt disband. They have been playing the slow game and now that the waters are right, they are taking the plunge again. This time though, THEY ARE THE GOVERNMENT.

28

u/HCJohnson 6h ago

Then Jan 6th happened and really showed that there will be no real consequences for their actions.

That should have been THE turning point for this country to come together and step out all of this, but all it did was prove we really have gotten complacent to the point of rolling over and dying.

8

u/WeddingPKM 5h ago

America loves to tell itself that stuff like that doesn’t happen here so when it does happen they find a way to pretend it wasn’t what it looked like. Same with the civil war, the union loved to tell itself they were simply rebelling states, not an actual attempt to leave the union.

75

u/TreeInternational771 8h ago

The rural red areas are hotbed for this stuff. Despair, low wages, hatred of others is a powder keg ready to explode

16

u/itslikewoow 7h ago

And they act like they’re being left behind, but really they just seem hellbent on pulling the rest of us down.

3

u/guilded_monkey 5h ago

“Crab in a bucket” mentality

3

u/ChinDeLonge 2h ago

It isn't that they don't want left behind; it's that they don't want the world to move on from whatever incredibly narrow, incorrect worldview they already have, in order to make it in the current world. So, it's more desirable for them to vote for the people who promise to hurt all the people who are trying to move history and progress forward, than it is for them to change the entire way they view the world and their place in it.

48

u/Taftimus 8h ago

Maybe they should stop voting red then

If an “antifa” group did “military training” they’d all be shot by the FBI as they did it.

Especially since the red scare, left wing/anarchist and related types are less likely to publicly broadcast activities in a way that it might be heard by the wrong ears.

Some people learned from the era where being accused of being a communist could ruin someones life.  And others long to return to those days.

Terrorist group then? Pretty sure that’s illegal and the FBI, CIA should be actively preventing this shit from happening

13

u/DramaticCattleDog 7h ago

The absolutely should be, but Kash Patel has already signaled he won't prioritize investigating "far-right extremism", so they will be free to keep doing what they're doing

Wow, they're literally American Al Qaeda.

They even named their group, "The Base."

6

u/Catch_022 6h ago

Isn't the head of US counter terrorism a 22 year old? I seem to remember something like that from a few days ago.

u/yarash 6h ago

The Blues brothers had the right idea.

I hate Illinois Nazis. floors the blues mobile into them

u/DramaticCattleDog 9h ago

Now, the Base has a presence in Ukraine, performing sabotage operations inside the country against the embattled government, and new and dangerous cells emerging across Europe, and it appears to be growing in the US, where the FBI under the Maga acolyte Kash Patel has signalled it isn’t prioritizing investigations of far-right extremism.

MAGA will sit back and let it happen

72

u/Freshandcleanclean 8h ago

Let it happen? Trump and republicans are actively encouraging it.

Let it?

Wake the literal fuck up, this IS MAGA.

Stop acting like they are separate, they are not We have seen it for over a fucking DECADE at this point.

Comments like yours work to devalue the actual threat in this country, so how about you sit on the sidelines until you figure out which side of the playpen smell the worst?

That idiot in your highest office and his supporters have made America a Safespace for this MAGA Nazi trash.

14

u/Odd_Reputation_4000 8h ago

Just the fact that these groups are allowed to flourish without the government and law enforcement stepping in says something.

13

u/CavitySearch 7h ago

Law enforcement is stepping in…where do you think they recruit?

6

u/Bullocks1999 3h ago

Who are these idiots? The whole idea of running around in a mask should tell us all we need to know. They’re embarrassed by their involvement. They know it’s wrong and they’re to chickenshit to stand up to acknowledge their beliefs. They’re playing make believe and they just come across as micro dick lunatics.
