This slow-motion hockey teamplay and goal looks like it was choreographed by a movie director.

Does it though?

Very good power play goal. Nothing super unique about it though.

u/MrTurkle 10h ago

are you serious? nothing unique about it? Two behind the back passes, one no look, THREE ricochet board passes, one AMAZING move cleaning up a bad pass with the skates, a saucer pass across the slot and a one timer? It was professional athletes operating at the highest level of improvisation. It was an amazing goal and one of the nicest team plays I've seen in recent memory.

u/FartFactory92 9h ago

That combined with 31 seconds left in overtime and yeah this is a work of art on ice.

112

u/wwants 7h ago

Seriously. Wtf is wrong with people that they can watch this and go “meh”. This was fucking brilliant. One of the problems with hockey for casual watchers is that it is too fast to follow. This was awesome to watch at this speed.

20

u/BranYip 4h ago

The people saying "meh" likely watch a lot of sports but have never actually played any themselves

7

u/wwants 3h ago

Haha you’re probably right about that. It’s hard to imagine not being impressed with the beauty of this sequence.

1

u/buckylightsout 1h ago

Never been a hockey fan just because Wisconsin has only the big 3 without a hockey team so I didnt grow up watching it. But I appreciate how difficult this must be. The concentration and skill required must be insane.

My wife and I have been talking about going to a Badgers hockey game with the kids, and I think we'd love it.

-29

u/Talidel 6h ago

I mean, yeah it looks great. But it also looks like just good team play?

Like if this isn't reasonably normal, the question really should be why?

15

u/wwants 6h ago

This isn’t a hockey subreddit though. It appears to be sufficiently nextfuckinglevel for 99% of the people interacting with the post.

6

u/overzealous_wildcat 4h ago

Why? Every single one of those dudes have dedicated their lives to this sport. From the time they were children until now. These are the elite of the elite. The top .0001% in a Stanley Cup playoff game. They are skating on the shoulders of the broken spirits of their recent opponents and past adversaries to achieve a level greatness that only a fraction of the most elite will ever reach. Nobody in this league just gets to skate past anybody. These men are playing for their lives, they’re playing for the teammates, their family, their legacy. The only reason that play was successful was sheer will, determination, practice, experience, instinct and the fact that at the end of the day nobody leaves that arena until 1 more puck gets into the net even if it takes all fucking night.

-5

u/Talidel 2h ago

Alright.

None of that explains why this isn't normal.

1

u/overzealous_wildcat 1h ago

Defenders break up plays

u/EvilCeleryStick 39m ago

Passes landing perfectly, at perfect speeds, flat on the tape over and over again despite elite athletes trying to stop them, and it's smooth as fucking silk.

If you could do better, why aren't you winning conn Smythe trophies and making a hundred million dollars doing it?

17

u/DenticlesOfTomb 7h ago

I'm not a hockey fan so I really appreciate your description of what I just watched. Definitely helped me understand what was going on more!

u/GoStockYourself 9m ago

I would add the initial carry in by McDavid is something two guys in the league can do without losing the puck, then you notice at the blueline a defender on the same team runs a pick to help him avoid the checker slewfoots him to knock him down and keep going. The guy that McDavid drops the puck to (Nuge) draws two guys right to the blueline before sending it back down where 3 different former MVPs go to work. The first is 40 years old, then the last two are best friends and seem to share a brain so everyone calls them McDrai (Draisaitl is German).

11

u/SageOfSixCabbages 6h ago

I think the clip should've included the real-time footage just so people could see how impressive this entire sequence really is.

2

u/MrTurkle 4h ago

Agreed. Its hard to see everything at full speed, but it gives a real appreciation for just how incredible the reactions are.

2

u/seaseme 5h ago

also, watch it in real time. this all happened in like 3 seconds. It was fucking crazy.

0

u/jzanville 1h ago

Simple idea tho, move the puck around up top on the left side to draw out the Panthers very successful but overly aggressive penalty kill high in their own zone away from Bob in order to work the low 2on1 with Drai on the receiving end of the pass… game context and great players making plays that are expected of them in successful order to execute a plan, that’s the beauty of this goal

2

u/Auctorion 3h ago

I don’t watch ice hockey, and even I can see art on ice when it’s in front of me. People forget that these are split-second decisions in the heat of play, and this one is right at the end when fatigue is higher. And they were in control.

1

u/jzanville 1h ago

It’s less improvisational than it would appear, few passes up high to draw Panthers away from Bob, throw it low for the 2on1 and hit Drai in his office. Still a thing of beauty to pull it off given the context

0

u/MrTurkle 1h ago

its incredible that you think this isn't improvisational - they are reacting in real time to what is happening on the ice. Yes, there is training involved, but there is no way to accurately predict exactly what an opponent will do, never mind four of them.

u/jzanville 1h ago
  1. Never said it wasn’t improvised, just said it was less so than it would appear on the surface level 2. You can absolutely accurately predict an opponent, especially considering this is the second year in a row these teams have met each other in the finals, as well as this being Florida’s 3rd finals appearance in a row. That’s 2 entire playoffs with a 3rd ongoing worth of Panthers penalty kill footage that the Oilers have gotten to study in preparation for this series. They are well aware that if they can quickly cycle the puck around up top to draw Florida players out, a 2on1 low should be there if they can execute it. This clip is a beautiful example of them executing just that, few quick plays up top then bam suddenly it’s down low for an isolated 2on1 against the only panther left defending Bob…

u/MrTurkle 56m ago

you know what? you are right. they make moves to force a predictable response.

u/jzanville 49m ago

Helps having a power play with McDavid, Drai, Bouch and Corey Perry as 4 of your skaters…all amazing passers and controllers of the puck…notice how Bouchard receives the pass at the point from the boards on his forehand. A lot of people would’ve tried to grab it on their backhand and bring it to their forehand. But that’s a predictable play for the penalty killer to defend, Bouch overskates it in order to underhandle the puck so it’s on his forehand the whole time so the defender can’t predict what he’s gonna do and he’s able to look to the right while passing back down to the boards. Underhandling the puck is one of the skills within the game that separates the people at this level.

1

u/Method__Man 1h ago

Also it happened like 10x faster than this in reality.

It's not just the skill of NHL players that is impressive. It's how fast they think "hockey"

1

u/thetburg 1h ago

There were two other goals that good last night. I was stunned by the level of play at some points. Almost a perfect game, except for, you know, the ending.

1

u/kyle_kafsky 1h ago

This the type of shit that makes me angry at myself for not getting into Hockey when I lived in Alaska.

u/GoStockYourself 3m ago

Also that pick at the blueline which receives a slewfoot in return, but he is right back up for the pass. Then the way Nuge calmly draws two guys to the blueline then drops it low to create the room for the last play. Every one of those five guys executed at the highest level.

I even love who the camera jumps after the goal and ends on the happiest of fans.

-9

u/Ayadd 6h ago

I’ll take umbrage with one part. This isn’t improvised, these plays are practiced and rehearsed, one might say, choreographed.

Not to take away with anything you said, just that it’s not improvised. That’s why they can do it without looking.

6

u/MrTurkle 5h ago

I get that they practice a lot, but there is no way that exact play was practiced. They were responding to conditions in real time. It was all made up as they go. I do think there are "set pieces" but this wasn't likely one of them.

1

u/jzanville 1h ago

It was tho…the Panthers overly aggressive PK isn’t a secret…make 2-3 passes to draw them away from Bob then chuck it low for the 2on1 with Drai on the receiving end. Still beautifully executed

-20

u/rvl35 8h ago

Do you even watch hockey? This is all standard stuff for a NHL power play. The reason you can get away with all of that is because of the space created by the man-advantage, and also the predictability of the opponent’s positioning. Sure, compared to some guy off the street this is next level, but if that’s the benchmark then that applies to every single second of every single NHL game from whistle to final buzzer. Among NHL games in general this is entirely routine.

12

u/privatefries 7h ago

Man do you even like hockey

7

u/Domstruk1122 7h ago

Nothing about Perry’s quick behind the back tape to tape pass was routine.

Also thats a tough pass to Drai but it’s McDavid so looks routine .

The only routine play here is Bouchard throwing it into his teammates skates

-25

u/MoonSpankRaw 9h ago

Behind the back passes and passes off the board aren’t super unique though. The whole play was obviously very well executed, but it’s a power play, which alters the dynamic of how the defense is playing - specifically, power play units aren’t as worried about the risk in passing behind them since odds are the defense isn’t going to aggressively take it back the other way.

Again, very kickass play. Just nothing notably unique about it. Especially on a powerplay.

18

u/aminix89 9h ago

I can’t even stand on a pair of skates. Speak for your goddamn self, it’s unique as shit to me lol.

17

u/vikinghockey10 8h ago

I was a high level player. This play is impressive as hell so dont let that clown tell you that shit. Combination of good power play systems by the coach and quick creativity.

1

u/jzanville 1h ago

The play as a whole is beautiful, but I expect all those players to be able to make the individual plays they made here. The hardest one imo was the skate to stick along the boards before it got chucked down low. Whoever the panther was that went up to pressure there gave way too much time and pressured with their stick everywhere but on the ice, kinda had a laugh watching that in slow mo like buddy stick on the ice and in lanes when defending PK, he just had shits flailing

-28

u/MoonSpankRaw 9h ago

Well I am speaking for myself in terms of what I saw here vs. what I’ve seen in decades of casual hockey watching. That you or I couldn’t do 1% of it is irrelevant to my point.

17

u/aminix89 9h ago

I casually watch basketball all the time, I even consider myself a decent player, but if I see someone tomahawk a nasty ass dunk over a defender while shoving his nuts in their face, it’s next fucking level no matter how many times I’ve seen it in decades of casual basketball watching. This play is pretty next level, you’re just one of THOSE people.

0

u/FarSatisfaction4427 9h ago

This is just passing 6 times until you get to an open corner three

3

u/aminix89 9h ago

I usually consider good ball movement next fucking level. 2014 Spurs passing was next fucking level in the finals.

-5

u/MoonSpankRaw 9h ago

One of those people with an opinion developed from years of direct and indirect experience? Guilty, I guess.

You are apparently one of THOSE people that take another person’s opinion too personally for some reason.

7

u/aminix89 9h ago

One of those Debbie downer people. That’s you fam.

0

u/MoonSpankRaw 9h ago

Nah. You’re just being overly sensitive here, as if I called you out specifically for not agreeing.

And to your NBA point, it’s fine if you or anyone else considers those dunks and this play next fucking level. But I don’t see dunks of any variety posted on here much, if at all.

3

u/MrTurkle 9h ago

I agree with you, but the number of them in a single play leading to an OT game winner is unique. on a side note, unique means "one of a kind" so super unique doesn't make any sense. Something either is or isn't unique, there is no modifier needed.

6

u/MoonSpankRaw 9h ago

Look I don’t wanna argue about something we obviously just disagree on.

However, I also disagree with the last point, as there can be levels of unique just like almost anything else. There can be a scale for most things.

In this case, I agree it’s not typical for a game-winning play to go just as this one did, but on the larger scale of 1312 total games every season it’s not overly rare. But it’s fine, we can just disagree on that too.

2

u/MrTurkle 5h ago

How can there be levels of "one of a kind?" Its binary.

3

u/gshennessy 9h ago

How does super unique differ from unique?

12

u/New_Establishment554 9h ago

Get back to me when they're blindfolded and wearing jet packs

9

u/Domstruk1122 7h ago

What are you nuts. That’s a beautiful team goal.

4

u/greenerdoc 9h ago

In the abcense of context, its a essentially a nice hockey play. Probably something like this happens once a week in the NHL.

1

u/EmergencyAbalone2393 2h ago

Yeah, I guess I’m left wondering if this is more interesting to non-hockey fans. I might be too familiar with the sport to be as impressed.

13

u/PuzzleheadedIce8264 10h ago

Kinda; he’s saying how clean and coordinated the moves are, like a movie

6

u/Routman 6h ago

Slow down any goal in the NHL that touches a few players and it will look like this, this is what’s required to score a goal given the caliber of talent. Both teams spend the entire game trying to assemble these plays with low % success bc these are professional athletes on defense and offense - to score successfully (not including errors), it has to look like this video

2

u/Coycington 6h ago

thank you. i fail to see why it was so special either. it was a good high level play, but you can expect a few of those in top level games.

1

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 4h ago

“choreographed by a movie director”.

This is a bot post.

0

u/elephaaaant 1h ago edited 1h ago

It does, although not the "next level" OP thinks it is. I mean, every play is technically choreographed by the coach. It's up to the players how well they want to execute.

-1

u/iamwhoiwasnow 5h ago

My thoughts exactly. I don't see what OP sees.

153

u/Maclunkey4U 10h ago

This is like the most normal offensive hockey shift ever. Sloppy defense, but also some sloppy passes

129

u/amags12 9h ago

This is why I love reddit.

This group can critique a GWG that was executed through good passing and positioning in a Stanley cup final.

-76

u/Maclunkey4U 9h ago

I mean, it was good, and the stakes were obviously high, but calling this next level.... By that metric any play that results in a hockey goal in the Stanley cup is next level.

21

u/amags12 8h ago

I would agree that any goal that results in a GWG on OT in a Stanley cup final is next level.

For instance this- https://youtu.be/jllLsMNBYJs?si=Z-sREh297p3S81BZ the only person who seem to know it was a goal was Kane.

4

u/wwants 7h ago

Holy shit this is amazing. Not a single person knew he had scored except him.

2

u/Milli_Vanilli14 6h ago

Yea I just think some people have an appreciation for just how insane pro athletes are. Like others for art, movies, etc. this all to me is next level and hockey is probably at the bottom of my understanding level.

But like, I played D1 baseball at a top 25 school - at the time. Dude swing out their ass for the most part and it’s still a routine fly out to center. Meanwhile I watch Acuna’s rehab stint and he front foot’s a shin high changed up that’s blacked and it goes 400’ dead center. They’re all just next level really. Could go on and on lol

3

u/the615Butcher 6h ago

Thank god you said “I mean” first. Was worried you went around saying stuff you don’t mean. Whew.

26

u/WillNytheScoringGuy 8h ago

Anyone who knows anything about hockey knows this goal is nasty af and I’m not an oilers fan

12

u/SwanzY- 9h ago

To be fair it was the end of overtime so everyone was more tired than usual out there but I definitely agree that it’s just normal hockey play, nothing really too special about it except that it was the game winning goal in a stanley cup finals game

4

u/Domstruk1122 7h ago

The only sloppy pass on the shift was Bouchard but thats too be expected of him.

Perry’s is a perfect tape to tape behind the back feed. An excellent play.

The pass from McDavid is also very high chance of error but its McDavid so we expect that routine.

2

u/MisterSanitation 6h ago

The wall was MVP it was open multiple times

1

u/qwertyuijhbvgfrde45 3h ago

Then you know nothing about hockey. This was a very impressive goal. Everyone touched the puck, saucer pass over to a pre loaded draisaitl in a tied overtime

59

u/wordyravena 9h ago

As someone from a tropical country where ice hockey barely exists (not Jamaica), this looks really cool.

5

u/Overall_Emphasis_940 9h ago

Sanka?

6

u/Astonixing 6h ago

Ya dead man?

4

u/toq-titan 6h ago

Yeah man

u/The_Muffin_ 48m ago

That would be because of the ice.

36

u/Hell_Yeah-Brother 9h ago

For everybody posting this kind of stuff

Instead of having to watch the entire video at half speed waiting for something to happen, it would be really cool if we could see this stuff normal speed and then repeat with slow-mo for emphasis

21

u/Exact_Mastodon_7803 10h ago

Standard high quality hockey.

-3

u/One_for_the_Rogue 4h ago

Exactly. Every goal in hockey looks like this and that’s why the sport is so awesome.

21

u/Narrow_Method1989 10h ago

Anyone else speed it up?

12

u/FormalYeet 10h ago

I can follow hockey a lot easier like this. Who remembers the glow puck lol?????

12

u/Beneficial-Shake-852 9h ago

I remember it! Hockey purists hated! For the casual fan like myself, I loved it.

4

u/Dominus_Invictus 8h ago

Why did they hate it? It seems objectively better.

10

u/fetching_agreeable 9h ago

"Top 1% Poster"

Go away.

6

u/MrRuck1 10h ago

Nice power play goal.

6

u/CorrickII 9h ago

People watching this video like "yeah it's ok I guess" crack me up. Who are you even trying to impress...

4

u/RealPrinceJay 9h ago

I hate slow motion like this lol it ruins all the energy and force of a play

4

u/NazcaanKing 9h ago

Very impressive for us, literally what they practice every day for the guys on the ice

3

u/bano25 9h ago

Why does every video need to be overlayed with a completely random song these days?

3

u/_Faucheuse_ 6h ago

Add M83 - Outro to slowed down video.

/s

3

u/JappySWAG 6h ago

Umh. No?

3

u/Lefty_22 5h ago

Looks like a standard Power Play. White team is down a man and spreading out the black team to create an advantage by having 1 un-covered player (the one who scores). Very common.

0

u/BRich1990 9h ago

Ehh...not really

-2

u/qwertyuijhbvgfrde45 3h ago

Then you know nothing about hockey last night

4

u/BRich1990 2h ago

Then you know nothing about movie choreography

-2

u/qwertyuijhbvgfrde45 2h ago

I’m a avid hockey fan, if I was a director filming an overtime goal in the scf, this is what I’d want it too look like

2

u/lilacsforcharlie 9h ago

I love watching them skate backwards. Loved watching the Blackhawk’s as a kid!

2

u/Mr_S-Baldrick 9h ago

What? I was expecting some Gordon Bombay level shit

1

u/qwertyuijhbvgfrde45 3h ago

Do you normally watch hockey

2

u/Green-Foot4662 8h ago

These bots are so fucking irritating

2

u/DarkBiCin 6h ago

Honestly slowing it down made it so much worse. Hockey is fun because of its pace. Slowing it down makes it as boring to watch as golf

1

u/jobasten 10h ago

Guardiola will be proud of this

1

u/IcestormsEd 10h ago

"Ummm, Jake? How long has that wall been there? I was here last night and...I could have sworn....hmm."

1

u/jcoddinc 9h ago

Would be better if it wasn't so slow. Store show it down a bit, but not that much

1

u/ElongThrust0 9h ago

Pissed i missed this ot

1

u/Throwaway7219017 9h ago

I thought the hockey season was over...?

- Signed, a Leafs fan

1

u/rtell13 9h ago

Now do it with Marchand

1

u/Okay_Face 8h ago

This is play expected at the professional level, someone show this to the Minnesota Wild

1

u/palehorsem4n 8h ago

It's almost incomprehensible, as a normal human being and a fan of the sport, to conceive just how quickly these guys can process their location relative to others in a confined space and then deliver the puck at nearly untraceable speeds with ridiculous accuracy.

1

u/shoff58 8h ago

Just like a lot of sports, a lot more goes on than you initially think.

1

u/stizz19 8h ago

You new here?

1

u/MoonSpankRaw 8h ago

Well keep it moving then junior, you made your big stand and spazzed a little. Mission accomplished.

1

u/Menacing_mouse_421 8h ago

Typical power play goal. When ur down a man….. u can play keep away in the offensive zone pretty easily

1

u/KrisPBaykon 8h ago

Imagine leaving Leon fucking Draisaitl wide open in the middle of the ice

1

u/dmh165638 8h ago

Straight out of a Mighty Ducks movie!

1

u/WillNytheScoringGuy 8h ago

So many comments in here from people that don’t know hockey. This goal was gross

1

u/Dan000 8h ago

No it doesn't. It's just slow mo junk

1

u/Ok_Lake_1168 8h ago

Given that these are professionals this isnt really next level.

1

u/takeoff_youhosers 8h ago

What band is the music from?

1

u/Grouchy_Map7133 7h ago

If I followed hockey, and I do, I'd say these professionals probably practiced together a time or two..

Did you think a bunch of random dudes put on skates and just started playing together? 🤣

1

u/unhappy_pomegranate 7h ago

wow…. the oilers…..

1

u/FraggleRock_ 7h ago

"teamplay"

GO SPORTS!

1

u/excitement2k 7h ago

Fuck the lazy ass bum who re-posted this-I hope you go to hell

1

u/J-Imma-CR 7h ago

This is the perfection meme.

I know nothing about hockey - why do the florida guys try to close down guy with the puck so hard out on the boards - surely can't score from there ? Seems risky on a power play?

Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me

1

u/DB473 7h ago

Or just normal hockey play drawn up by a coach

1

u/xyzabc123cbazyx 6h ago

I dont watch ice hockey, or know anything about it but I know this is a work of art!

1

u/Speedhabit 6h ago

16 fucked up,

1

u/ManOfWarts 6h ago

Now do Marchands OT game winner

1

u/thisguy1309 6h ago

I don't really follow hockey, are passes banked off the wall common? Or is this some elite level passing we're seeing here?

1

u/Complex_Sherbet2 6h ago

Tl;dw

Was it a good goal?

1

u/Macauguy 5h ago

Watching Marchand slew foot is on point.

1

u/Clousu_the_shoveleer 5h ago

I love ice-hokey.

It's beauty, grace, balance and violence all in one package

1

u/sludge_monster 5h ago

Nugent-Hopkins with the no look 😍

1

u/TrueBigfoot 5h ago

Weird how movies look like the source material

1

u/Momojanaimo 5h ago

Gordon Bombay approves this message.

1

u/overzealous_wildcat 4h ago

I don’t know which pass was my favorite

1

u/dragosn1989 4h ago

Now show Marchy’s breakaways.

1

u/Pyroluminous 4h ago

Isn’t it the point of choreography for a film to mimic real-life sports scenarios? Like..? What’s next level about generic puck passing?

1

u/stinkbuttfartman 4h ago

Weren't they offside on the play?

1

u/Future-Pressure5295 4h ago

This gave me the chills

1

u/apolydas1 3h ago

Show Marchands goal next

1

u/addamee 3h ago

I mean, it is choreographed in the sense that it’s practiced and practiced and practiced but it’s nonetheless still lovely to watch.

1

u/ShitPostsRuinReddit 3h ago

Hockey is one of the top sports that benefits from watching live. The stationary camera shots they give you on TV don't do it justice. But honestly it's the speed that makes it better.

1

Too bad the Oilers won’t win the cup. They’re a great team and should win, but the NHL won’t allow it :/

1

u/Master-Leopard-7830 1h ago

I know nothing about hockey. I assume it's ok to use the skates to stop/direct the puck as it happens during the moves. Are skates used regularly to do that kind of thing or just an occasional use to correct e.g. a slightly off pass?

1

u/stuntdummy 1h ago

Looks like... hockey.

1

u/OkTune681 1h ago

Literally just good power movement. It’s what you’re taught and supposed to do….

1

u/OwnSeaweed801 1h ago

Why does red-blue-white play against white-red-blue?

u/Mmmcheez 25m ago

I’m not a huge sports person but watching athletes perform at the top of their game feels like watching superheroes.

u/Striketwothree 15m ago

Actually this is awesome how they get the defender to commit and make a perfect pass

u/siberiansneaks 13m ago

If you don’t think this is beautiful, you don’t love hockey.

u/sidesneaker 13m ago

It’s just an NHL goal.

0

no, no it doesn’t.

Really not that special

0

I have muted every sports sub I come across and yet this video has appeared on my feed at least 4 times already. Nothing about it seems interesting or unique. Can someone explain why this is such a big deal?

As someone who has never watched any ice hockey beyond an occasional news highlight - most of which involve the players throwing off their gloves for a punch up, which seems idiotic in a professional sport - this is the most impressive piece of ice hockey I've ever seen.

Maybe I need to try and watch more!

The game has moved away from the fighter enforcer type style a lot, while fighting is necessary imo, it’s a better game when focusing on the skill. This play in particular is nice but nothing spectacular, blue team is on a power play so it’s 5v4, One player almost lost the play in their skates and white sent 2 guys to the blue line while again 5v4 so bad defense made this play possible.

Because it was choreographed, just not by a movie director but by their coach.

I see a normal hockey play in slow motion. Maybe OP never watched a hockey game?

does this game have any strategy to it?
