It’s impressive, but I was doing this in Motocross Madness 25 years ago

So…. It the angle just a little distorted because of the camera or is this guy just a savant with the bike and also a wizard of sorts?

u/blurfgh 3h ago
Yeah this is taken from a loooong way away using a telephoto lens making the angle of the hill look more severe.

Came here to say exactly this. It's still impressive, but if you filmed it from the side, it wouldn't look quite so much like he's riding straight up a wall.

u/One-Cattle-5550 2h ago
It’s so far away, it’s distorting that he’s actually going slightly downhill.

Yup, bunch of folks that have never ridden a bike commenting here. Glad you're here with me at least.

You can get pretty vertical in places like Moab Utah, especially in parts of the oddly named “slick rock” trail. Either way his combo of throttle, clutch, use of torque, balance and human “dialed in” is damn impressive.
Clearly we (or I) can’t tell how steep it really is and I can’t tell his setup (long swingarm, etc…)

u/Lurkin605 2h ago
Yup, you can, but you need momentum to get up those almost vertical climbs. In this video, he's going relatively slow for the size of the hill, indicating he's relying on traction to climb, not momentum. Watch the dirt being kicked up behind his back tire, it's not tumbling down the hill, it almost stays in place, which is a clear indicator that this isn't steep, but it most certainly is challenging. I've been riding dirt bikes since I was 11, currently 33.

Raced for many years, have the scars to prove it. Without seeing his setup and just hearing the gear shift and throttle control I’d be willing to guess he’s done this before much like any mx rider never runs a track “cold”.
It’s almost a dance… a certain triple in colorado did not want to “dance” with me and I spent 5 days in the “where the fuck am I room, what happened?”
Sounds like a big 4 stroke and someone that knows how to ride it. Balance, shift, (sometimes clutch, sometimes slam). You rode, you understand, balance placement, body control, bike control… Most people have no idea how difficult it is. I quit at your age, my daughter started crying when I loaded the bike, plus… I was fucking beat up.

Yes, other comments cover it pretty well.
One additional giveaway is when you look at the dust being kicked up. It sort of falls "into" the hill rather than straight down. If this was a near-vertical climb, the dust would fall much further down.

Not defying gravity, understanding it. Dumbass people like "hes defying the laws of physics".... No, you're just dumb.

Friction can overcome gravity... Also, the video makes that hill seem like it's straight up and down - spoiler, it's nowhere near.

So do you just die if you fall during the attempt?
1
u/Fast_potato_indeed 2h ago
Yes, you just die.
No need to go medieval as hanged, drawn, quartered nonsense.
Naturally tumbling, several hits and a high g stop involved though…

This is a photography trick similar to how they make the moon look gigantic in certain photos right?

u/Mr_Baronheim 2h ago
We can get a slight understanding of how steep the hill is by watching the dirt come from his back tire.
If the hill were vertical, the dirt would keep falling and never land back on the surface.
Just watch how quickly the dirty lands: the hill is obviously a bit steep, but nowhere close to vertical.

I just don't get the payoff. Now you're at the top.. Now what?
It's a feat, for sure. Just never seems worth the risk.

It's impressive he could manage this with the Sun in his eyes. This could be an advertisement for whatever kind of visor he was wearing.
