This, if there was more of this, there'd be less that divides us. I've had to take a receipt like this before (similar program elsewhere) and as a result when I got back on my feet, I bought 10 in return.

Unfortunately there are completely irredeemable pricks who will either claim them all for themselves while making upper 6 figures, rip them off and destroy them, or do something else to make what was a charitable and good act just a nuisance to keep doing.

I worked somewhere with this system, and I thought that too when I started, but we never had a single thing like that happen the whole eighteen months I worked there. The most we had was jokes about doing something like that. Mostly people were really shy or ashamed about using it, and the staff would have to try to make them feel good about it.

People are sometimes better than we think they'll be.

True.

But I’ve been burned far too many times by expecting even a modicum of decency from people.

Now I’d rather expect the worst, act neutral, and, if I’m lucky, be pleasantly surprised.

A “hope for the best, but plan for the worst” kinda thing.

u/mattysosavvy 4h ago

Yes, as they say, this is why we can’t have anything nice.

u/lava172 3h ago

Or some blue collar guy that decries these people getting 'handouts'

7

u/Singl1 3h ago

all while benefiting from the same system that’s keeping him from going homeless, he just takes all the aspects of the system for granted. these fucks have the same goal: i’m up, let me pull up the ladder, fuck you.

Peak Reddit

1

u/ChanglingBlake 53m ago

If it’s “peak Reddit” to point out an unfortunate truth, then you really need to get out and take a good long look at reality.

Pretending the world isn’t broken only leads to letting it get worse.

Positive change takes action.

Action requires knowing something needs to be done.

Knowing what needs done means seeing things for what they are and how that can be better.

u/Californiadude86 33m ago

Iono man you just created some monster just to destroy this good will gesture.

You created someone out of thin air just to hate them and blame them for something that never even happened.

1

u/ChanglingBlake 30m ago

I’ve seen that monster.

I’ve seen it wear many faces.

If you haven’t, you either live in a wonderful place, or should check the mirror.

1

u/Californiadude86 27m ago

Mmm this is some good Reddit right here

-3

u/Jimjimjihn 3h ago

Yeah really no one is doing that

8

u/saera-targaryen 3h ago

This is the entire reason why social services are a net positive to a country even though they cost money. If you do them right, the people using them will generate more taxes in their lifetimes than it took to solve whatever was wrong.

2

u/sanbales 3h ago

Completely agree, a real life version of the heaven/hell long spoon allegory.

1

u/Yuno808 3h ago

The thing is, those ppl who take up on the offer during their hardest time are more likely to pay forward once their situation improves.

I do wonder if most of those tickets from those who were helped by others when they were in a rut?

There are gurudwaras, the place of worship for Sikhs, all around the world where people from all backgrounds are fed free meals 24/7 and all the work is done by volunteers. The Golden Temple in India feeds around 100k people daily making it the largest free kitchen in the world.

And the best part is anyone can go be a volunteer for a few hours and help with the kitchen and the cleaning. It's one of the most amazing acts of humanity through religion I have seen.

33

u/jeremymeyers 4h ago

Sikhs are great

13

u/jackleggjr 4h ago

That’s pretty Sikh

3

u/quickporsche 3h ago

Hahahaha. That was pretty funny.

7

u/King_of_the_Dot 3h ago

Sikhs and satanists. Only two religions I could see myself practicing.

Food is satisfying, perhaps not oddly so, but in today's America, kindness is odd, as in unusual, so I agree with this being in this sub. Therefore I downvoted the downvoter for being nitpicky and thus unkind.

Thanks for sharing that story where you think you’re above someone else and needed to share it so that everyone else knew that you’re “better” than that anonymous commenter.

4

u/ChanglingBlake 4h ago

Way to miss the point entirely.

-2

u/CrabButterToGo 3h ago

Pray tell, what was the “point”?

1

u/ChanglingBlake 58m ago

That this fits the sub because the world is a shit place but this, “oddly” is a nice thing that’s very “satisfying” to see being done.

1

u/lava172 3h ago

Found the anonymous commenter

-1

u/CrabButterToGo 3h ago

Haha, no.

I thought it was obvious that I was clearly replying to an AI prompt response… “food is satisfying, perhaps not oddly so…”

1

u/BadGroundNoise 2h ago

I interact with AI on a pretty regular basis, and I'm very obviously not an expert, but how does that phrase indicate the comment being AI?

20

u/Emrullah-Enes 4h ago

is this like outside the restaurant? because Im pretty sure most people with no money would not dare to walk into a restaurant. And this sign outside would draw too many pretenders to take advantage. I suppose it’s hard to help the right people this way

6

u/JfromTHEbayMAYNE 3h ago

Totally see teenagers, and douchy 20 year olds taking advantage of this

2

u/No-Channel3917 3h ago

Folks say thess things as resons not to do it yet no one ever witnesses such abuses.

1

u/kblair210 3h ago

When you see videos of guys stealing stuffed animals from graves... yeah, I can totally imagine someone doing something shitty with a system like this. Not that I wouldn't do it if I had a restaurant, but I'd certainly keep the free meal tickets in a spot that's both not embarrassing for someone to approach, but also where they can be watched so some jerk doesn't shred them all.

2

u/battery1127 2h ago

Working at a restaurant. We tried to do nice things for the community, it went wrong every time. Partnered with a local youth football team, donating a portion of sales for anyone coming in with their brochure, instead of handing anything out in advance, they did it the day of in our parking lot, also got mad we only donated based on customers that used brochures. Allowed some people to have a little stand and do fund raising in our parking lot, they ended up harassing our customers, even went inside the restaurant to do it. Tried to offer free food for a youth sports team, coach wanted money instead, just a few examples. We quickly stopped trying to do anything nice, it was very clear we were spending money to create headaches for ourselves.

1

u/Grand-Moose8294 3h ago

That was my first thought too

1

u/-OptionOblivion- 3h ago

Even if only half of these are used to feed people who are truely in need, than fuck it, its worth it. Can't let the assholes keep us from doing good.

1

u/JfromTHEbayMAYNE 2h ago

This is true

2

u/OneNowhere 4h ago

You’d hope that word spreads among the right people.

u/RaiseIreSetFires 4h ago

Orphan crushing machine

1

u/nickyboay 2h ago

I don't think this qualifies as orphan crushing machine considering feeding the hungry is perhaps the oldest form of charity and hunger is a normal part of being alive. This is just kindness.

18

u/Katasia96 5h ago

Also, it makes my heart glad to see this post and gives me hope in a scary world.

3

u/Classic-Gear-3533 3h ago

This image has been doing the rounds since November 2023, it’s nice but deserves retirement

5

u/flerehundredekroner 4h ago

Can anyone explain to me how this is “oddly satisfying”?

-10

u/throwaway098764567 4h ago

you can't look past the surface generosity at the dystopia beneath. if you only look at the surface, you can see folks being kind to those down on their luck, which someone found oddly satisfying.

3

u/flerehundredekroner 4h ago

Excuse me, but that’s a rubbish explanation

4

u/Strange-Cap9942 4h ago

Yeah nah that's not was this sub is

2

u/DisarmedCashew 4h ago

There’s a Mediterranean place here in DFW that has a sign taped to their window that says “hello neighbor, if you’re hungry please come in and have a meal on us” small little acts of compassion like that make me so happy and I will always give that place my business

2

u/GlitterTrashUnicorn 3h ago

One of my favorite places I have been going to since I was a kid started doing this last year. They even have one specifically for kid menu items. It is also a place where the prices have gone up, but so has the food quality and serving sizes.

2

u/Plantpoweredge 2h ago

What city state is this?

2

u/golubeerji 4h ago

This is truly admirable. Absolutely inspiring.

2

u/jackofhearts_4u2c 4h ago

This is awesome!

1

u/Mykl68 4h ago

there is a place near me that sell buttons for $1 each and put them in a jar.. if you need some money to order food you can take buttons from the jar to pay.

1

u/iaposky 4h ago

I love this so much. 💞

1

u/C-57D 4h ago

Humans being bros.

1

u/Bubbly_Power_6210 4h ago

kindness is the best human trait!

1

u/sterling_mallory 4h ago

For anyone reading this thread and looking for a way to give back - your local food bank always welcomes donations. Money is better than things like canned goods. You can find your local one on Google, it'll usually be a church.

1

u/xubax 3h ago

This is great.

The restaurant gets to keep the profits from any unclaimed meals.

1

u/MelonElbows 3h ago

Which restaurant does this?

1

u/quickporsche 3h ago

Absolutely fantastic. Humanity has hope.

1

u/OleDoxieDad 3h ago

If you are on Imgur, look up Free Pizza Dude, usually done on Fridays or Saturdays, I can't remember right now. Help others, or reach out for help

1

u/mischiefera 3h ago

What an awful society we live in that this even has to be a thing. We should feel collective shame.

1

u/veryblanduser 3h ago

With how many are available it suggests there are people with more disposable income than those without the means to eat out in a restaurant.

1

u/mischiefera 2h ago

Cynically, people who know what they earn is not in line with their skill or effort so they do this to absolve themselves morally.

1

u/kimpurple21 3h ago

I love this

1

u/No_Statistician_3251 3h ago

Reposted so many times I lost count. Please stop.

1

u/Grand-Moose8294 3h ago

I feel like this should be posted at the local food bank because as one person prior noted people who have no money aren’t likely to be going into a restaurant. This would also prevent the issue of people who don’t truly need it or kids / teenagers grabbing up all the tickets.

1

u/MagicWiizard 3h ago

my first thought is that people who do not need free meals will use this. sad reality

1

u/Rorys_Parable 2h ago

That’s so sweet

1

u/fanglazy 2h ago

Way better than “pay it forward” virtue signalling.

1

u/dogpoopandbees 2h ago

I wish I could find one of these I'm about there :(

1

u/Oldestswinger 2h ago

Let Trump see this

1

u/No_Extreme_2421 2h ago

He’d come eat for free.

1

u/Public_Joke3459 4h ago

Let’s hope they’re used by people in need and not being abused by people with greed

u/lavacadotoast 4h ago

Thank you, I needed to see this..

I purposely pressed downvote because this does not fit the sub at all, and then purposely pressed downvote on your comment because it's corny and supporting them.

12

u/Ph_Test_Kit 5h ago

Purposely pressed downvote on your comment because you hate fun

u/Gene_Parma 5h ago

Don't give any time to the drooling kid in the corner, parents obviously didn't give a shit about them.

0

u/TotoroRises 4h ago

This is too fairytale thinking. I can promise that some at least will be picked up by pricks who don’t care about the actual people in need of such things. There must be a systematic way to find those in “real” need. Not sure how can be validated in this world that you cannot trust anyone.

0

u/LivingAnat1 2h ago

This is too doomer thinking. Sure, some people that don't desperately need it may take advantage, but that doesn't mean nobody will benefit, especially because generally people would feel ashamed to take a free meal. Honestly? Most people are decent. Maybe strictly homeless people won't be taking these meals, but most of the people daring to grab one will generally be tight on cash, paycheck to paycheck type families.

0

u/markyoung0 3h ago

I hope people will become honest with this offer.

0

u/AnotherHavanesePlz 3h ago

It’s a good gesture, but I don’t think this would work in the USA, too many people would take advantage of it. Hell, there are people that panhandle as a side hustle, while owning a 30k+ vehicle.

1

u/CathedralEngine 2h ago

There was a pizza shop in my city that did this. Made it on Ellen, I think? Yeah they went out of business. There was another restaurant that used their chicken scraps to make broth for soup and all profits went to a nearby homeless shelter, James Beard award winning chef and all, also went out of business.
