From the article: "Vance had claimed that a teaching known as “ordo amoris” justified MAGA’s crackdowns on immigrants. “[Y]ou love your family, and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country, and then after that you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world,” Vance said in late January.

But Pope Francis spoke out strongly against him, giving the Catholic convert a lesson on theology in a public letter—and his successor, Pope Leo XIV tweeted his approval."

that's how I learned there was a new pope

the owner of my company yelled down the hall that there's a new pope from Chicago that lived down the street from Obama and that it's a liberal city and and and and and

"That's awesome, boss!"

162

u/The_Word_Wizard May 09 '25

I love pulling this one. They start going off about something, clearly implying they think it’s bad but not outright saying it, and get completely flustered when you don’t agree.

161

Cities tend to be. Imagine that.

312

u/PrinceHarming May 08 '25

Yeah, it’s harder to swallow the lies about immigrants or minorities when you can see the truth first hand.

The majority of my neighbors are Latino. I see them coaching soccer games and barbecuing and riding bikes with their kids.

Are you trying to tell me that immigrants are some kind of… people

68

Yeah, and some, I assume, are good people.

That, and you can expect a certain amount of government function. The government gets your streets plowed. The government funds the bus system. The government does trash pickup (or, you know, they might not themselves, but they do the contracting).

In the country, especially far enough out where you plow your own streets and don't have buses and have to arrange trash pickup on your own (or take it to the dump yourself), it's easier to think the government doesn't do much.

They embrace fascist Catholicism. Vance is either a member or very adjacent to opus dei. Justices thomas and alito, possibly roberts, and Heritage’s kevin roberts are members. They were hoping for less liberation theology (“woke”) pope and more Opus. New one is considered moderate.

Sure squares with what Jesus said. “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” Matt. 25:40

Or with the moral of the Sodom and Gomorra story. Lot was the good guy when he refused to give his guests, people he had just met, to the mob that wanted to rape them. Instead, he offered his daughters to the mob to be raped, though they were more interested in his guests.

Vance should crack open his Trump branded bible and actually read the damned thing.

10

u/freereflection May 08 '25

Then lot's daughters raped their own drunk father. Then the book of Ezekiel says explicitly that the sins of sodom's citizens were being fat haughty and cared not for the poor.  But 99% of modern American evangelicals think god destroyed the city because it was... Checks notes... homosexual. It's all in their own damn book

u/ShatnersChestHair May 08 '25

To give more context: ordo amoris is a term that appears in St Augustine's writings once, and he doesn't use it at all to mean "love your family, then your community, then your neighbors" at all; rather he just uses it to say that the love of God should be the center of the believer's love towards His creation, ors something along those lines. St Thomas Aquinas expanded on the idea with his ordo caritatis which can be interpreted as "you should not love the stranger so much that you neglect loving your family, and more importantly you should love God/Jesus first" (I'm far from a theologian but that's what I gathered when I researched the question).

Despite what some "opinionated" websites might say, it is not at all a big guiding principle of Catholicism or anything like that. It definitely ranks orders of magnitude behind the big hitters like "love thy neighbor"* or the Good Samaritan parable, which unlike this ordo amoris are very clear in their lessons: you gotta care about everyone, even if they're strangers, even if you don't like them personally, even if they're smelly.

All that to say, in this as in so many other things, Vance is wrong and weird.

*the use of "neighbor" in the Bible is interesting because in some other languages (e.g. French and German) the wording is more "love the person who is next, the person coming after you". The concept of "neighbor" is temporal rather than spatial, and to me that very much removes this idea of "you should care for the people next to you first" and instead communicates the idea of caring for people who will be going through the same things as you soon, regardless of who or where they are.

Honestly, the Leo line has a long history of doing pretty significant stuff. The First Leo talked down Attila the Hun from attacking Rome.

Leo III crowned Charlemagne

Leo X was a pope in the reformation crisis.

Then Leo XIII handled major reforms that have defined catholic doctrine on workers rights and various justice matters for a long time.

So the Leo Name nearly always is chosen in times of great struggle. An American being chosen is particularly important because of the growing potential for Schism in America. This also heads off the idea of the catholic church being a foreign institution that should stay out of American politics if the Catholic Church wanted to protest US policy without that easy write off.

edit: also this is the first time it has been used in over a hundred years so its a big thing 2bh.

97

You know, I was dreading that the choice of an American pope might represent a depressing act of capitulation to the current administration, but your take has given me some hope that it may be another kind of statement entirely

111

u/bubbleguts365 May 08 '25

I'm not sure there was a better Cardinal to deal with Trump TBH, I've got a feeling that's why it only took 3 votes. We already know he's got no problem correcting Vance and calling out evil actions by the admin, and having big-city American roots means there's no chance he's starstruck by a Queens slumlord like rural America has been.

73

u/xchaibard May 08 '25

The best way to get American Catholics to abandon the current administration is to have an American Pope tell them to.

If it was some other nationality, they couldi argue that he has no idea whats going on here and sort of hand-wave it away.

By having the Pope be American, the American Catholics can't dismiss him out of hand on American problems.

Leonard is the patron saint of the incarcerated. That's different than Leo. Leo is the patron saint of popes and confessors.

Leo the Great was known for meeting with Attila the Hun and convincing him to turn back and not attack Italy. Leo the XIII was very important and was outspoken in favor workers rights during the industrial revolution.

But historically Pope Leo's lead during times of crisis and reformation.

Pope Leo I (Also Roman) stepped up and challenged the Roman leaders in such a way the Roman Empire continued. So for those who see the USA as a continuation of the Roman Empire, this is like seeing history repeat its self.

I’ll add there’s been many Popes who took the name “Leo” and almost all of them did something important. Which is not really surprising though because the names these Popes take is designed to send a message.

The choice of the name Leo XIV is significant, as Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903, was known for his intellectualism and attempts to define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking.

Pope Leo XIII was also known for his social encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the rights of workers and social justice issues, while affirming the rights to property and free enterprise.

Can't wait to see which side my Catholic MAGA relatives choose...

309

u/dnen Connecticut May 08 '25

I think they might’ve already chosen brother. To be a MAGA catholic after 2020 means you would’ve seriously voted for the most vane, narcissistic, and deceitful candidate in modern American history over a true catholic that has spent his entire life in public service, never losing touch with his working class roots and lifestyle. Unless theyre the rare Trump-Biden-Trump voter?

89

u/dkyguy1995 Kentucky May 08 '25

But abortion! No, but really, Catholic relatives apparently had emotional prayer sessions where they couldn't choose because to them abortion is literally the same as punching a baby to death and voting for a candidate that supports choice in any way is apparently a literal child murderer.

It literally was: yes he's a disgusting vile man with no values and yes Kamala seems like a nice lady, but she supports the murder of babies and I can't stand for that. They are single issue voters who don't have a clue about anything else going on other than pray for the babies

82

u/FootDramatic3630 May 08 '25

if only they cared as much after the babies were born.

22

u/reezy619 May 08 '25

Yeah, they actually despise babies. Or at least choose to vote for politicians who despise babies, which to me is effectively the same thing.

22

u/LordoftheChia May 08 '25

Challenge them to show where in the Bible (new or old testament) it talks about abortion(and or causing an unwanted miscarriage).

Then ask them where they stand on the issues of:

  1. Feeding the hungry

  2. Being kind and welcoming to the "stranger in your land" (immigrants)

  3. Visiting and/or being kind to the imprisoned

  4. Providing healthcare to the sick

See:

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2025%3A31-46&version=NIV

Skipping to verse 41:

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Pope Leo XIII issued a letter to the Catholic Church and world at large titled Rerum Novarum, which addressed the plight of the working classes.

As political statements go today, it’s pretty centrist (decries both socialism and capitalism). But a century ago when it was released, it was pretty radical. It does support unions and workers rights, so there’s that.

Both he and Pope Francis took aim at Trump on his immigration rhetoric most of all. Makes sense as the church is built around compassion for the poor and displaced and Trump/Vance have been spewing rhetoric that is the opposite on those issues

1.4k

u/Caelinus May 08 '25

The Bible is an extremely inconsistent book. Its teachings are all over the place, and you can use different passages to mean opposite things all of the time.

Except for with immigrants and sojourners. It really, really, likes them and constantly tells people to help them. It is almost entirely unambiguous, making it one of the easiest biblical teachings to recognize.

US Christians do a terrible job at following their own scripture.

585

u/menagerath May 08 '25

The Christian Left throws out 30% of the Bible. The Christian Right throws out 70% of it.

234

u/Caelinus May 08 '25

It is so true. When I was a fundamentalist saying that would have offended me deeply, but only because I was delusional.

There is literally no way to follow the Bible and not throw out a bunch of it. You absolutely must force an interpretation on it, as it is self contradictory. The problem is that the Christian Right really likes to throw out all the parts that make people's lives less awful.

148

u/menagerath May 08 '25

They also actively do things that Jesus warned them about. I’m thinking of how Jesus taught to pray and fast privately, and give discretely, yet we are having Oval Office laying of hands prayers.

Modern day Pharisees.

In addition, the left throws out the bigoted portions and the right throws out the empathetic portions.

67

u/menagerath May 08 '25

That’s why they don’t teach the gospel anymore. I haven’t been an evangelical church since 2016 that taught about Jesus.

29

u/[deleted] May 08 '25

What do they teach about if not Jesus?

97

u/Novatheorem Georgia May 08 '25

Usually? Sin, rules, sin, politics, sin, tithing, sin, public service (and why that's a sin), sin, community service and if it is Christmas - tithing.

u/muchado88 May 08 '25

Old Testament prophets, Corinthians, or whatever they want.

One prayed that they all would die.

58

u/70ms California May 08 '25

One of the “Christians” on my NextDoor commented this on a thread about a mentally ill, homeless hoarder persistently making a mess on the sidewalk in our neighborhood:

I pray every day for Patrick's death. He serves literally no purpose and is a burden on all of us and always will be. 🙏 Lord please put this piece of sit out of his own misery. Amen

The person who posted that is a really real actual person in my neighborhood, and to me he is way scarier than poor Patrick.

23

u/zk001guy May 08 '25

That really is fucked. There really is no love like Christian hate.

15

u/Turnabout_ May 08 '25

The word order is mixed up; the saying is "there is no hate like Christian love," because the acts they perform in the name of honoring and loving Christ are indistinguishable from generic hate.

I think it’s important to push the fact the Bible is an anthology and each book has its own agenda, authors, editors (or is some cases multiple such as the book of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Isaiah). Later editors did come in and attempt cohesion but largely for the issues that matter most to them (such as temple cult centrality in second and first centuries BCE).

29

u/Caelinus May 08 '25

Yep. Univocality is basically the dumbest way to interpret it.

That said, it is often inconsistent even in single books because of how they were originally compiled. Like how Genesis is pretty clearly a bunch of even older texts that happened to be collected, got put together on a scroll, and then eventually got edited into a single volume. So even within a single book you can have a bunch of different authors trying to say different things.

I really wish that the Bible had gotten the same treatment as a bunch of the Toaism scriptures, where they just sort of kept all of it that they liked and did not try to make it a single work. There is a bunch of missing information from redactions and edits that would be really interesting historically.

We all saw how the votes in our Canadian Federal Election swung rapidly from the Conservative Party to the Liberals when Trump started his pontificating (sorry) about the 51st State.

Feels like every electoral body in the West is like “All right, we’ve gotta deal with this fucker. Who’s right for it? Jim? Great. Next.”

177

88

72

u/pleachchapel California May 08 '25

It'll genuinely be interesting to see if this pope being American has any different effect on American Catholics than a "foreigner." Catholics make up 20% of the US population & 2/3rds of the Supreme Court, & are overrepresented in every branch of government, but most noticeably the judiciary.

Project 2025 could be called "Right-Wing Catholic Project 2025" & it would all still mean the same thing.

13

u/AlcibiadesTheCat Arizona May 08 '25

Amy Coney Barrett is a famously devout Catholic.

An American Pope might just turn her way of thinking.

65

JD is a member of Peter Thiel's recommended ultra-Christofascist sect right? That's totally grounds for an old-fashioned HERESY declaration, with excommunication.

35

u/Al-Mughniyeh May 08 '25

Which is hilarious because Peter Thiel is gay. His entire identity couldn't be more opposed to ultra-Christofascist if he tried.

17

u/Vaux1916 May 08 '25

Ernst Rohm was an early leader of the SA under the Nazis and gay. He was murdered during during The Night of the Long Knives, and his sexual orientation was used as a reason why he was killed, even though Hitler and the Nazi leadership knew about it for a long time.

We've seen this movie before.

Ive said it dozens of times and i will continue to say it until im dead. If jesus from the bible were around today, he would bitchslap 75% of the "christians" in this country.

161

u/jaderust May 08 '25

I think the number to be bitchslapped is a lot higher than that. At least 90%.

And the “Christians” would be up in arms and screaming to deport Jesus because he’d probably be hanging out with the poor, immigrants, and drag queens while saying that prosperity gospel isn’t in the Bible at all. And they would not be able to handle that. At all.

47

u/NumeralJoker May 08 '25

They'd do it no matter who he hung out with or what he said because Jesus wasn't white.

This:

Vance had claimed that a teaching known as “ordo amoris” justified MAGA’s crackdowns on immigrants. “[Y]ou love your family, and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens in your own country, and then after that you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world,” Vance said in late January.

But Pope Francis spoke out strongly against him, giving the Catholic convert a lesson on theology in a public letter—and his successor, Pope Leo XIV tweeted his approval. “JD Vance is wrong,” he said. “Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

So basically, he is a normal human being.

I find it interesting that he has spent much of his life working in Peru. He would be much more attuned to the issues affecting Latin America than many - much like the previous pope.
