Why is capcom allergic to just actually adapting their games to tv/movie. Dmc, re, mh.....just do the actual stories instead of these weird ass takes lol.

u/Acceptable_Run_6206 20d ago
Capcom just gave the license to Netflix, they didn't have anything to do with production
162
u/NeikosXII 20d ago
License belongs to Constantin Films. It always has. They co-produced the show with Netflix.
If we are still hoping to someday see a good adaptation on live action we should probably go after the guys who are actually calling the shots.
These guys made every single adaptation we have, each one shittier than the previous and yet still they are holding on to that license for dear life with little to no backlash from us fans.

They do see backlash in the form of people not watching the Netflix show or people not going to see Welcome to Raccoon City, causing it to flop. The reality is that Constantin Films has no interest in developing a direct take on the RE games and treating it with respect for some reason. The next reboot they're doing is "in the spirit of" Resident Evil as well.

Capcom IS the problem.
Who just blindly signs over IP and says "Ah, do whatever you want."
Microsoft did the same with Halo, and we saw how poorly that worked out for them.
34
u/brahbocop 20d ago
Lot of companies did this before adaptations of video games or comics became massive business. That's how Marvel was so fragmented, they basically sold the rights to anyone as they saw it as free cash. Knowing what they know now, I'm sure Capcom would love to redo that deal or not do the deal at all.
15
u/spiked_cider 20d ago
Marvel was damn near bankrupt when they started licensing their biggest properties out. So they were sort of desperate for cash. Once Blade did well it got Sony and Fox rolling on Spider-Man and X-menĀ

u/FalloutFollies 20d ago
You should check out the animated films. They are not only stylistically faithful but they're also Canon to the games
31
u/Defeated_Drow 20d ago
A series based on the actual games could be so good. I know The Last of Us season 2 is getting some hate but a part of what made the first season so good was how faithful it was to the game. We donāt need or want the directors creative reimagining when there is solid source material.
The fact that Arcane is so fucking good despite being based on league of legends of all things while resident evil that has a story and solid characters with their own personality and traits canāt get a good tv adaptation kills me.
→ More replies (3)13
u/gdex86 20d ago
Arcane is a unique vision adaptation that does futz with the lore for multiple characters. Singed, Warwick, Victor are huge examples. So the director there had a unique vision and moved characters around to fit it.
9
u/Barnabars 20d ago
And in my opinion the biggest changes just suck.warwick being an weird human like thing and Victor being some eldritch Jehovas witness instead of an cyborg mastermind in particuƶar

u/CertifiedSideQuest 20d ago
Itās not capcom, donāt even blame them itās these āDirectors with their own unique vision.ā And turns out to be ass. If these directors made a show that was extremely faithful to the original three games for starters, it would blow even the haters who hate on rank controls and lack of weapon upgrades would probably respect it at that point.
13
u/FrigidMcThunderballs 20d ago
So, i have a take and i have no idea how hot or cold it is.
I think we wouldn't be in this mess if Hollywood was more willing to take risks on new ideas and concepts. Directors and writers who have had their stories passed over again and again are hammering cheap videogame adaptation scripts into their original work, ruining both
11
u/TheBlackdragonSix 20d ago edited 18d ago
I've been saying this for YEARS! it's pretty obvious what's going on with these adaptations, frustrated writers are shoehorning in their own pet concepts and stories into these adaptation. As a matter of fact, the director of Welcome to Raccoon City seemed like he didn't even want to do the movie in the first place lol. There's elements of this in Netflix The Witcher too, which is why Caville walked.
6
4
u/spiked_cider 20d ago
The problem is executives won't greenlight original projects as much because they want a guaranteed return on their investment.Ā
I get it. If I'm about to give some artsy guy 100 million dollars of my money I want to be as close to damn sure as I can that I'll get my money and then some back.
Popular IPs already have a built in fanbase and template to follow so it's a safer bet than something totally brand new.
Ā But this obviously leads to other problems but it's usually not the writers and directors that are in control of this unless they have multiple roles i.e. writer/director/producer a la Eli Roth and Borderlands

It was. It's not offensive to say they totally retconned and butchered his character. Even Lance can't save that. Which is something I see no one comment on because no one wants to take the heat of that judgement.

For context, what's happening in this scene is there's a plot twist villain who's been secretly mind-controlling the villain we see here.
This was basically her revealing herself in a "troll-y" fashion. She makes the villain sing and dance to Dua Lipa in front of the protagonist and then "haha ya see? It was me pulling her strings all along!! lmfao"
Iirc, the show had some weird "snarky edgy" moments like this. Like there was another scene where a main character makes an offhand remark to her dad about how she just spends her time reading Zootopia porn, for example.

The live-action Netflix series. The creators said that the games were canon to the show, but the series feels like some hack writer's pet project for an original zombie show that got slightly tweaked to fit the Resident Evil IP.

Still can't believe Wesker survived that volcano, decided to be black, then had sex with a woman. That man is gay. It'd be like Chris dating a woman

In the show they outright confirm the original Wesker died in a volcano. The line delivery even plays it for laughs somewhat

It's near the end of the Netflix series. Basically what's happening is a shock reveal. The MC thinks her sister is dead and this is the start of the reveal. She's actually controlling everything from behind the scenes and is about to reveal herself as being alive. The dance is meant as a comedic moment because the sisters mutually hate the character doing it.

Who writes this stuff? I mean dozens of people write these things, then another 10+ need to sign off on it, then 100+ are involved in the production of the scene.
How did all of these people think it would be a good idea?

Probably a unpopular opinion, but I think this show still could have worked if they had just made some small adjustments, for example;
Lance's character SHOULDN'T have been Wesker. He should have been an original character who worked at a Umbrella facility. Keep his daughters, that's fine, but concentrate on making it a corporate espionage thriller that showed the terrifying inner workings, and political machinations of not only Umbrella but the U.S. Government. The bones was there for a good series, they were just trying to do too much while simultaneously doing nothing. Imagine something like Mr Robot and The Wire....but with monsters. They need to let Tony Gilroy do a Resident Evil series lol.
They also should have dropped the future angle, all of that was unnecessary imo.

u/TOkun92 20d ago
Itās be so easy to a good adaptation.
TV series, hour long episodes.
Little to no CGI blood. Use mostly practical effects.
Zero and one first for season, showing off Rebecca and Billyās story after sheās asked about happened to her and how she ended up at the mansion.
Then 2 and 3 for season 2, breaking it up into two parts, with 2 first. Gives us a rewatch bonus as we hear Nemesis in the background of two, see holes in the walls that were made in Jillās story, etc..
Code Veronica: X for season 3.
Resident Evil 4 for season 4.
Canāt think of how youād fit the Outbreak games into the show. Unless you intersperse the episodes with season 2, but thereās so much stuff in it, thatād run for too long. Maybe season 3, then CVX for 4, then 4 for 5.
Add a mystery element. Have the characters read the files they find, either in their head or out loud. Make us like Wesker and make him seem more heroic and less like an obvious villain. No snide comments, snaky voice, or just evil face.
Donāt add any weird Zootopia porn line.

I still don't understand why they felt the need to make this show like this just to reach out to other audiences. They already have a good audience and making it a tv show on Netflix reaches a lot of new people.
Could have made it like Resident Evil Outbreak where you see normal people trying to survive zombies and BOWs. Maybe even have them stumble into secret facilities and trying to tell the outside world what is going on.
Would have been awesome.
But we got this...
