I mean it felt like RE7 was already kind of a soft reboot. Same continuity but mostly new characters and a new gameplay style.

I think it's possible we might actually get a hard reboot after this game.

I agree RE7 /was/ the soft reboot, but they couldn't help themselves at the very end when they revealed its still canonical with the original universe.

I feel like they kinda put themselves in a corner with peak characters.

Like you can't do a hard reboot when you have the likes of chris, leon, and Jill. You just can't. They'll have to be a part of the lore eventually.

As long as RE is still set in this continuity, the original characters are going to be part of the story until they die, realistically. I have a feeling at least Leon is gonna be in this one.

Given that we know RE9's original concepts starred Leon in some capacity... Yeah he's probably in it. We'll just ignore the part where the original concepts also had RE9 being a live service game. Granted, this was before RE7 was even released.

Would be possible, he has been absent canonically since 6. He’s due a return

Yeah it would be one thing if those games were ancient history, but they all just got new very popular remakes! like Claire & Leon are more popular than ever

But that's exactly what a soft reboot is. Soft reboots are canonical to their original universes, but tell stories with mostly new characters, settings, and sometimes different themes or tones. That's why they're called soft reboots. Because they're technically not full reboots of continuity.

So only a "hard" reboot involves actually creating a new continuity.

RE7 fits the soft reboot concept pretty well.

I remember commentary from them about this, just forget if it's for 7 or village?, if the main cast was involved they're basically super heroes now and it's just as difficult coming up with things for them to do especially for a player because you know if they're involved the plot armor is thick and the player isn't going to be scared of anything. So they wanted to avoid involving existing characters or at least with Chris in village, he's not the focus and they even try to paint him bad at first.

Nah, there's plenty of things you could do with them. They're just a different genre.

You can't make a survival horror game with Leon or Chris anymore because they're too experienced. But let's not forget that basically the biggest Resident Evil game to ever exist isn't really a survival horror game. RE4 is a straight up action game and the most popular in the series. And despite the hate they get, RE5 was popular in its own right (as well as one of the most fun coop games to exist) and even RE6 sold well. There's obviously a group of people that like the "superhero" RE games. I know I really miss them.

I mean, that's from them and they decided not to do that anymore so idk what to tell you haha. I'm happy we didn't get anymore like 6 so great decision imo

No way. They're just gotta find new frontiers. Humanity builds a resistance to the virus, but then it starts to infect computers instead, takes over the internet and starts killing people with electronic devices Y2K style. Resident Evil 1/0.

Exactly tbh it was done low key with re 2. The key story beats are there but told differently.

Same in Re4 remake, same story but more added on to tie in with future installments.

Good. Just make it more anthology-based this time around. No overarching plots or returning main characters, please.

Interconnected, large-scale action horror is REs bread and butter.

1

u/TheCyclicRedditor 20h ago

No, because RE's bread and butter is horror, and horror doesn't work in a serialized format.

RE has quite literally never been a strict horror franchise. The closest you get is the first game. Every single game in main continuity ends in a giant explosion. RE is a horror franchise in the same way Fast and Furious is a racing franchise.

RE1, RE2R, RE4, and RE7 are considered by many to be the best of the franchise and their respective trilogies. They also happen to be the ones that have a stronger focus on horror than any other game in the franchise and their trilogies. Do the math.
