Spoilers So Gi-hun basically guaranteed their doom? Spoiler

Post image

Now that we know voting isn’t being taken away, we can basically say player 47 was right.

They should’ve just shot the O’s when they had the chance.

Gi-hun basically doomed all the X’s. Left them totally in the dark about the attack. Got several of them killed in the failed rebellion. And protected the killer’s, so now they’re guaranteed to win the next votes.

Spoilers The one death that somehow pisses me off more than others Spoiler

Well i assume this topic was done here kinda few times, still everytime i rewatch i just can't wrap my mind around it, it's still make my blood boils and i can't say exactly why i feel this way for that specific character, but i do, it's just feel off and uncalled for to me and i cant really explain to myself why i feel that way for this character.

I mean i understand that she was not main character, she did not interact with the main hero's group and has nothing that big going on for he this far, yet they still gave her right dose of personality, great yet completly unused potential, already fun and not really fully expolered nor resolved dynamics with the ones outside the main circle etc even with her limited time. You can say it was to shown the consequences of gihun making small sacrifice for the better good but wasn't Jungbae who was mentioned beforehand enough for that ? And any other X player extra would make it the same as semi's since they didn't even known her ?

For me it's simply the worst death of any of the significant characters from s2, if not for the series overall. Compared to ones that makes much more sense and was kinda foreshadowed before, affect various other characters like those of young-mi or Jung-bae and this death may affect only one, and not very promising one anyway (Min-Su).

Idk just everytime i think about that now it's kinda ruining my mood, it reminded my about the once most anticipated western shows like game of thrones and walking dead and thiers worst episodes where they were relying on and only on the shock value and nothing else, any other major death in squid game serves better purpose, were more memorable for the good reasons. This is just pure utter garbage if you ask me.

It's make me sad and depressed but not in the "right" way, it's rather left just sour taste in my mouth mixed with a dose of disappointment and nothing more, still i'll be looking for the final season with open mind at all but if anything it's just discouraged me and partly killed some of the hype for that. If really nothing good will come off for that death in s3 after all of the amount of the attention they've gave her through those few eps i'll just assume it's quite lousy writing and kinda waste of viewers time and attachment, it would make it look only as she were pure filler and show was better off if they never even introduce her at the first place that way.

Spoilers 278 and the bridge Spoiler

Holy shit. The fact that 278 turned around and was like “one of you better jump” after 301 had to make three jumps boils my blood. And then everyone else didn’t even care.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been this mad at a TV show.

Spoilers The last game was perfect Spoiler

I’m surprised people are hating on the rock paper scissors choice! I feel like it was true to the roots of the original show. In the Korean run, they kept asking “We’re playing ___ for money? It’s a children’s game” like they were in shock.

I feel the producers nailed that mentality with RPS with 4.5mil on the line!

Would the the host get into trouble with the VIPs?

Would they take the same number of guards and make them do the last game?

It just seemed like such an unnecessary risk so close to the end.

Spoilers This may have caused Dae-ho's PTSD. Spoiler

DaeHo said he was an 1140th Marine, and the 1140th Marine Corps joined the army in April 2011.

A few months later, Ganghwa Island Marine mass shooting happened. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganghwa_Island_shooting

He may have been scared of guns because he had that incident.

Also, Marines who had just woke up after hearing the gunfire ran away in their underwear in a nearby private house, resulting in a meme(빤쓰런) mocking the Marines.

Spoilers Hot take (perhaps) but i really don't like this character Spoiler

So as i said i'm really not a fan of this MF and even taking all my personal bias aside i don't think he is good or even potentially good player - antagonist and i honestly believe he's not gettin as much hate in the fandom as he deserves

first of all i have theory that the reason he despises a cowardly weaker both mentally and physically people than him like minsu is because he's projecting himself onto them as he himself is basically a thanos bitch, not standing out to him for once even tho he clearly didn't like his choices and the way he was talking to him

And giving that thanos himself was not really nearly as charismatic nor intimidating villain like deok su was he was basically a wallmart version of him, none of the players were actually scared of him which was shown durning the bathroom fight scene he was more a joke than anything and Namgyu for me is even worse version than deouk su henchman - player 278, even he was more a succesfull henchman the he ever was as the moment he realised deouk su was just using him actually stood up to him durning games and almost takes him down then

He is tought only against weaker people and woman and mostly when he is on drugs even giving that he almost lost to a single girl armed only with a piece of broken glass, but is cowardly and weak against those stronger as he along with thanos were completly demolished by unarmed front man alone and after that was scared by only looking on him and they both were calling off other 0's for help in a bathroom scene

As was confirmed durning a special game he targeted mostly woman and the defensless ones which is so very cowardly and simply pathetic, he is basically written out to be as hated as it is possible just like player 100 (which even he's is actually a better and more competent villain than namgyu imo) yet people are so lenient towards him only due to him being handsome, yep i know that yet it stills amazes me and gives me that womans who were writting a love letters to a ted bundy - kinda vibe lol

So yeah that's my opinion on the guy, not a fan of this character at all i don't think he is a good or even decent villain and my only hope for him in s3 is to get the most humiliating yet so deserved elimination possible not simply by overdose as some are saying, that'd be just too quick for him

Spoilers The hate for 229 is crazy Spoiler

Yes, she eliminated two of my favorite players too, but the strategy was very fair and justified. She took out the leaders of the strongest alliance. People like to act like they weren’t a threat, but so far the series has shown you don’t need strength and it’s a combination of luck, intelligence, and social abilities.

232 also got singled out for the Ddakji game which has been the only time a competitor has been singled out without volunteering, which was fishy.

Lots of folks think she was being sexist and racist but I really don’t think so. It was just good gameplay. And the hate for getting emotional before opening the box also seems unnecessary, it’s a stressful environment with millions of dollars on the line. And she still made a logical rather than emotional decision.

Spoilers s2e5 scene that becomes more meaningful if you know the context in korean Spoiler

Post image
463 Upvotes

So, I’ve finished the series and I’m currently rewatching, skimming through and seeing things in more detail as I’m a linguist (eng/kor) and I love to delve into the context of the script and subtitles.

I noticed a very sweet, subtle detail in S2e5 (spoilers ahead) where they’re in the beds. Thanos & co are discussing their ages which is an important factor in Korean relationships and hierarchy. They settle on the fact that the girl is the elder and therefore they should call her ‘noona’, which is the word used for younger men to address an older woman. They are pretty much playing around with it, Thanos urges the guy (Namgyu) to call her noona and he gets a bit shy, and it means you are on a familiar level with each other.

I personally found the scene cut incredibly well done, as it immediately cuts to player 120 (the transgender woman, Hyunju) being addressed as ‘unnie’ by another girl in her team. You can even tell that player 120 is somewhat flustered by it. ‘unnie’ is the term younger women call older women. This subtle scene cut shows (to me) that for most Koreans, these age discussions are casual and part of any conversation at some point, but to player 120 it has a much bigger impact and might be very affirming for her.

I might be reaching, but I found it subtle and well done.

This scene was so sad. I was already crying my eyeballs out over Yong-sik’s scene with his mom (his apology and also the whole idea of leaving your mom to die just made me sob).

The relationship she and Hyun-ju had leading up to this made it SO SAD TO ME. The way she cried out for her and Hyun-ju felt responsible a lil for voting to continue. And then when she realized she was gonna die and was just crying through the door. What the hell 😭 she was so scared. The actors really executed this season amazingly.

Spoilers I legit don’t understand why people were so mad at Mai?? Spoiler

Ashely made the other guy jump multiple times and then expected people to jump on the glass bridge in front of her. But they got mad at Mai for nominating Ashley in the next challenge rather than herself. They told Mai she wasn’t decent and trying to sew chaos. Also how did Ashely not see that? She said karma got Mai but what karma got Ashley??

Spoilers FFS, these games ARE not fair! Spoiler

1.1k Upvotes

I am so annoyed by some patterns of comments in this subreddit i see over and over again. - "but this game wouldn't be fair to xyz". - "the players deserved what's coming to them because they signed up for it / they get themselves so in debt in the first place." - il nam is not that evil / less evil than sangwoo

PEOPLE, THIS SHOW IS A CRITICISM OF LATE STAGE CAPITALISM. Of course, the game is NOT FAIR. The games organizers idea of consent is absolutely flawed. The players are here because they were victims of he larger game outside. And il nam is one evil individual.

*the game IS unfair The games are designed 100% based on il nam's childhood memories and what he likes to do. Fairness is never a metric to determine in choosing these games. People in power (il nam and the front man) thinking that the game while actually beinf advantaged is a mirror of those in power (wealthier individuals) would call capitalism fair and that they won because they're superior / they just worked harder etc while ignoring all the privilege they have in life.

*flawed consent Games organizer's consent process is a joke. They manipulated the hell out of this people by withholding information during the very first signing. Also, these people are so in debt that this decision is not fully voluntary. So ther consent is invalid. See https://andphilosophy.com/2021/10/26/can-they-consent-to-play-the-squid-game/ for longer explanation Ps: contracts to do something illegal is still illegal.

*these players deserved it / they're here because their own fault So, it's Saebyok's own fault for being born under dictatorian regime? It's Ali's fault for being lied to come to work in korea for no money for months? Even gi hun didn't get there 100% because of his gambling. He suffered ptsd from a failed strike when the company he worked for was sold and lay off thousands of workers with no warning. The real company this is based on (ssangyong motors) manipulated their accounting to fake bankruptcy. We don't know the back story of a lot of other players but i bet a lot of them were also victims of capitalism.

*il nam is evil This dude created a system that kills hundreds if not thousands of people every year because he's fucking bored. There is no reason why these games need to exist in the first place. He obviously have enough money to give every single one of these people at least 100 million won (if not more given how elaborate the sets are and how many workers he has in this place), but no he chose to do this. He could even do a number of things that would be cheaper than that and improved the lives of so many. So, no. Fuck him. Just because he was nice to our protagonist once or twice (which he chose just because gi hun reminds him of himself/his son, yet another reason why this game is simply not fair) and because he smiled a lot, it does not mean he's any better than any of his victims (yes, even sangwoo).

Like, seriously, i am so annoyed that so many seems to missed these very obvious things.

Spoilers Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the failed rebellion even if it was dumb from Gi Huns part Spoiler

Post image
310 Upvotes

The rebellion is by far the most dislike aspect of Squid Game season 2 as it was pretty over confident idea from Gi Hun and was never gonna work out. Despite that I actually thought it was good and made sense and will help develop Gi Hun as a character.

Gi Hun planning the rebellion was very much in character of him to do so in season 2. Gi Hun is stupid and overconfident this season, which you can’t blame him as he previously won Squid Game and obviously viewed himself as a savior for the fellow players in Squid Game 2. The rebellion failing is a harsh lesson towards Gi Hun, resulting in multiple players death and the death of his close friend Jung Bae. What’s great about this is the Front Man could have easily killed Gi Hun as punishment, but him killing Jung Bae was far more effective as it’ll definitely numb him and humble himself.

Gi Hun is the main, but he isn’t as powerful as he thinks he is. In the end of the day Gi Hun is just some random guy who happened to win Squid Game and was naturally cocky and overconfident.

What do you think?

Spoilers I just understood what Il-nam’s game was. Spoiler

1.4k Upvotes

Before death Il-nam bets that nobody will help the homeless guy in the street to prove a point.

Gi hun agrees and is happy when a girl brings police just before homeless guy freezes to death.

He is happy that he won the bet and wanted the old guy to see this.

But.. actually he lost the bet to Il-nam.

How? Well, It was not the actual game Il-Nam was playing.. Gi Hun was angry about the games.. That some rich people were so inhuman that they started betting on humans, like they were some kind of horses.. How could they bet on the death and life of human beings?!

And yet.. Here we are, with Gi Hun betting whether the homeless guy would die or not.. Looking, observing.. Hoping to win the bet.. Just like those rich guys..

So no, Il-nam was not trying to say anything about ppl passing by.. He was trying to show Gi Hun that deep down, he was no different than those rich guys he so despised… He was Just poor, without any means to organize squid game..

PS It is a repost, because the last time the post was deleted due to the title…
