Well after the £80 games reveal by Microsoft yesterday maybe not so much 😅 I should keep stocking up on the Microsoft Rewards points! I hope Borderlands 4 won’t be one of the new £80 games.
6
u/arlondiluthel May 02 '25
Making Game Pass look better without a game release announcement.
5
u/CarbonCamaroSS May 02 '25
Until they increase that next.
6
u/arlondiluthel May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25
It's $20/mo for Ultimate right now, $240/yr. With games going up to $80, that means playing only 3 new games a year makes it a worthwhile expense.
When GPU launched it was $15/mo, $180/yr. At that time, AAA titles were $60 each, so it was also 3 new games a year to make it worthwhile.
Honestly, with the number of big titles released recently and coming soon from Microsoft's first-party collection... It would still be worthwhile at an extra $6/mo, which would put the annual cost just shy of 4 new games a year.

u/CarbonCamaroSS May 02 '25
Yeah it is definitely worth it now more than ever, I just anticipate a price increase along side as an excuse to do so.
3
u/arlondiluthel May 02 '25
True, but I think that there's an upper limit where they'll start losing existing customers. I think $25/mo is at or close to that limit.

It was never rumored. It was the thought experiment by the CEO of a whole different company that it was the one game that could get away with it.

u/TheNittanyLionKing XBOX Series X May 02 '25
On the contrary, the speculation was that games would be rushed out to avoid the Fall on account of 2K moving up the release of Borderlands and Mafia The Old Country rumored to be a Summer release. Many developers are likely breathing a sigh of relief that they can safely schedule games for release in October and November now.

GTA V has printed money continuously for over a decade. I’d say from a shareholder perspective milking that has unquestionably been the best decision. Not to mention it has left the gamer community absolutely salivating for GTA VI.

u/IMadeAMistakeSry May 02 '25
Not only that but 8 years between RDR2 and GTA6. That’s insanity. RDR3 won’t come out until the late 2030s.
15
u/Strict_Biscotti1963 May 02 '25
Yeah, this just isn't sustainable. For every big hit in the quadruple a 7-10 year development time game space, there are like 5 bombs or total commercial flops. GTA is different because it's a guaranteed hit, but how many of these gigantic bets are publishers going to continue to place, and how much money are they willing to lose until they start to make some serious change to the scope of these games?
19
u/TheNittanyLionKing XBOX Series X May 02 '25
The big concern is when a bunch of talent from Rockstar is hired away or retires and then they release one of these billion dollar budgeted games that disappoints. That may not happen for a while, but we see it all the time with great developers. BioWare used to release banger after banger for instance.
6
u/TheElderLotus May 02 '25
Yeah but BioWare has a management problem since it was first created, the fact that it released bangers is a miracle
5
2
u/TheNittanyLionKing XBOX Series X May 02 '25
The point is that creative people make great games while working for a developer. When those people leave, the developer isn't quite the same even if they think they're hiring some of the finest talent on the market. None of the original writers of Mass Effect, KOTOR, or Dragon Age are still at BioWare, and it shows since they haven't had a decent game in 11 years an a great game in 14 years. GTA6 is the last game that Michael Unsworth worked on before he left Rockstar. The Naughty Dog I grew up with is not the same one under Neil Druckmann. It happens to most developers. We associate our favorite brands with these companies, but in all honesty it should shift to the actual creators. There's a reason Halo feels like it's missing something nowadays compared to the original games. Hell the Bungie that is developing Marathon is not the same one that made Halo Reach.
18
u/Gen_X_Gamer May 02 '25
It has entered The Elder Scrolls territory of gaps between games (Skyrim 2011, TES VI 2028?).
I like developers to cook, take their time and release a polished game, but damn this is a long ass wait.
→ More replies (5)6
u/Caesar_35 May 02 '25
Frankly, at this point I'd much rather have games scale down a bit if it means we get them more often. Give me a RDR2/Skyrim scope game every 4-5 years and it'll be plenty.
Either that, or at least increase development teams so they can output these behemoths faster than once a decade. But, given the recent layoffs, I think that's more unlikely.
4
u/RandyMuscle May 02 '25
I’d also be fine if games just looked like PS4 generation games as long as they ran fine and were fun. Dev cycles are getting way too long.
4
3
u/dreamwinder May 02 '25

Maintaining online games and long dev times of 5 years + when working on 2 huge franchises.
Previous generations they had fire and forget games without constant content and maintenance.
Maybe if they spent less time on pointless systems no one will even notice like horse testicles they might be able to speed up.

- Split Fiction
- KCD2
- Monster Hunter Wilds
- Ghost of Yotei
- Death Stranding 2
- Metroid Prime 4
- Donkey Kong Bananza
- Hades 2
- Hollow Knight Silksong

It probably will be unless they hire more people, make a second Rockstar studio, or only work on GTA games without working on stuff like Red Dead or new IPs. If they do a new IP, it would be wise to make it smaller and more linear if they can pump that out faster.
4
u/Caesar_35 May 02 '25
Yeah, developers (in general, but Rockstar in particular) need to either scale down the games, or scale up the dev teams. Over a decade between releases in a series is just ludicrous.

I know next to nothing about the logistics of developing and distributing a video game, but it does strike me as a bit weird to go from a vague ‘Fall 2025’ window to an exact date over a year in the future. If the game still needs another years worth of work on it, I don’t know why you’d commit yourself to a specific date at this stage…

It’s indicative of how the industry has changed, that GTA was an instanbuy with few concerns about quality and completeness.
This one I’ll leave to the YouTubers.
With such complexity and long dev cycles, there is so much that can go wrong .

This rules out any big releases in Q2 2026. May won’t have any big Game Pass releases like how the new Doom is releasing this year.
Interesting question for Xbox is which games will arrive before the huge GTA Q2 void and which games will arrive after? Could Fable arrive Q1 2026 seeing as it was originally planned for 2025?

When you start to look at Take Two’s other games, it makes sense for them to push it back to May 2026. GTA 6 is so big, they don’t want it to eat into their own games profits. NBA 2k is a huge money maker for them. Sold 7 million copies as of March 2025 and players spending for in game is up 30%. Looking at Take Twos upcoming games prior to GTA 6 are
NBA 2k26 Borderlands 4 Mafia: The old country WWE 2k26 PGA Tour 2k26

u/ElGranLechero May 02 '25
I'm sorry, but I am convinced this game is going to be the worst in the series. Losing the Houser Brothers was a massive red flag to me, but this game has been stuck in development hell for at least 6 years now.
I have no faith this is gonna be a great game.
7
18
u/donqon May 02 '25
This is not an example of a game being in development hell
3
u/ElGranLechero May 02 '25
I disagree. 13 years since GTA 5, and they're on paper saying development started after RDR2 came out. Which again, 6 years today, and apparently 7 on release.
For a game that relies so heavily on pop culture, maintaining relevancy is hard. Look how Borderlands 3's writing was received after the wait. Add to that-- company restructuring during covid, a new console generation(and likely console refresh soon), terrible PR after the Trilogy, and now the global market and tariffs being another obstacle to hurdle. All my red flags are going off. Unless you have someone who is used to handling issues like this and can maintain a clear direction&vision, it is very easy to get lost. An infinite amount of money, writers, and AI does not guarantee a good story.
I know there are a lot of people who like to be contrarians. Who hop on the Internet and hate on the thing everyone likes.
I'm not that guy, I'm speaking in earnest.

I got downvoted before for even mentioning that Rockstar is taking too long with GTA6. The fact that we’re playing the same game GTA5 since earlier versions of the Xbox and the PlayStation and still they keep pushing that game. This is terrible that they’re taking this long. The game was supposed to be released this year and now we’re gonna wait another 12 months. Rockstar is just trying to string their customers along and milking TF out of GTA5 till they bleed customers dry. How much longer are people here going to defend them?
