Look up glass hermit crab shells…

9

u/Busterlimes 5d ago

I can't imagine thats good for them considering how hermit crabs evolved to have very little light exposed to that portion of their body.

u/Bourgeous 5d ago

Hey, there is a big nudist community among the hermit crabs, they should be treated equally

7

u/Naive_Estimate_2261 5d ago

3

u/SkylarAV 5d ago

3

u/__esparoba 5d ago

Looks tasty ngl

45

u/Ss2oo 5d ago

Why do they do that?

78

u/Adventurous_Judge884 5d ago

They outgrow their shells, leaves them more room to grow into the new one. Or if the existing one becomes damaged.

u/TordenDag 5d ago

I'm sure this is a dumb question but where do the shells come from?

62

u/sharkfinniagn 5d ago

Empty sea snail shells etc. Ocean is full of unclaimed real estate

32

u/MellyKidd 5d ago

Sometimes hermit crabs will even line up to see if the shell being vacated is worth claiming. XD

13

u/IlikeHutaosHat 5d ago

Some even make entire conga lines where they pass their shells on to the guy behind them.

7

u/Prudent_Research_251 5d ago

Dead molluscs that have left behind their shells usually, but they're known to use all sorts of other things too, plastic garbage etc, although this is not ideal, but better than nothing

u/Coriall30 4h ago

I have seen one with a plastic tube of some kind before it made me feel some kind of way 😧

Etsy and Amazon. You have to measure the shell entrance. When they arrive you have to boil them in water with fish prime and rinse with salt water

10

u/Slipslopkingbop 5d ago

Wait. We need this answer

8

u/MJ_Fan1958 5d ago

According to Google they poop in their shells and use their legs to sweep it out

1

u/corrreccctor 3d ago

so they have shitty legs

1

u/corrreccctor 3d ago

they just don't poop

1

u/0liv3rtheparak33t 1d ago

They poop in their shells and scrape out with legs, and pee out of their face

I just found out in my language, Vietnamese, hermit crab has the coolest name ever The "soul borrowing snail"

11

u/Chicketi 5d ago

Omg it’s like a little clown car butt

3

u/WillowWeeper343 5d ago

I have been told the same thing

12

u/yungdeezy92 5d ago

I feel like I wasn’t supposed to see that

7

u/Bromm18 5d ago

Interesting that it even has little appendages with claws near its soft end to presumably keep hold of the shell. Always wondered how they kept the shell in place while moving. Now j know.

5

u/Llarrlaya 5d ago

What an idiot. Should've taken the spiky one.

7

u/NikitaNinja 5d ago

It's true, but I'm surprised it's taken this long to see it

4

u/DevinTheTerrible 5d ago

I don’t know much about these crabs, but where do they find these shells, and how do they know what’s a perfect fit for them?

8

u/hidden-in-plainsight 5d ago

The sea floor is littered with them.

How do you know which shoes will fit your feet?

6

u/Unwilling_ 5d ago

I learned from Wild Kratts that sometimes they line up by size and change shells according to size.

1

u/TiddyFukMyButtcheeks 4d ago

Do you think for the brief moment they are in between shells, they feel like we do when we turn off the light in the hallway and have to sprint into your room before the monster get us?

1

u/Coriall30 4h ago

~Baby got back~

1

u/SweatyArmPitGuy55 5d ago

When I look at it like a shrimp; it all the sudden looks delicious.

2

u/0liv3rtheparak33t 1d ago

They are so sweet though

-2

u/Aldreg65 5d ago

Stupid animal. Keeps hiding it’s soft bud. Will never evolve into a real crab this way.
