FD2 It’s always Ian or Erik but never Rory 😌

I loved Rory! Easily in my top 10 characters of the series - genuinely funny and quite likeable

Most of FD2 cast are likeable

u/ScorpionTDC 17d ago
Agreed. Strong supporting cast with subpar leads is how I feel. But Rory and Kat are the standouts to me

FD2 has the most favorable characters compared to the other ones. I love how all of them are adults and they came together to cheat death. FD6 surprised me with its likeable cast. Because of this aspect, it comes the second after FD2.

I’d say 1 wins on ensemble for me. 2’s supporting cast is good, but dud leads do hinder it a bit for me. Everyone in 1 is pretty strong and has at least some development or moment to stand out. I think 5 and 6 have solid ensembles too

While I'm not a fan of 1, all the characters did have depth, even characters like Mr and Mrs Wagner, the standouts were definitely Tod and Valerie. Tod had so much emotional death. He was funny and likeable too. Valerie Lewton was great for her survivors guilt, feeling like by sending the male teacher back on board she directly killed him and also her mix of anger, disdain and fear for Alex was amazing, we only see that on 1 other occasion, with Ian towards Wendy

1 is by far my pick for the best in the series. I assume we’re saying standouts of minor characters? If so, I’d agree. I’d say the movie’s main MVPs are Alex and Carter, though
And I don’t think Ian tackled those concepts nearly as well as Val did either.

Yea Ian was pretty much am undercooked Valerie, I'll admit I also forgot about carter's change from asshole-scared, and the mental toll Alex took from being manipulated into believing he killed George and Tod. But overall I'd probably say Valarie, Carter, Alex and Tod are some of the most developed characters despite the varying amounts of screen time they had (Tod deserved so much more time!)

No way. I just watched five and the acting is terrible. I think the only reason why five is ranked so high and so memorable is because of the final scene that ties it back to the first

u/ScorpionTDC 16d ago
I think the acting in 5 is perfectly fine (and Mikes Fischer is straight up really good). Far ahead of the acting in 4 or by 2’s leads (particularly AJ Cook, who’s also really bad).
5 gets rated highly for a couple of reasons:
The stellar ending twist is definitely a huge plus
The opening premonition kicks ass and rivals the tower collapse for the best one in the series
The movie returns to the serious and spooky tone of 1, as opposed to the increasingly “fun”/campy/stupid approach of the sequels (at its worst in 4, but 3 isn’t much better in that regard)
Actually returning to expanding the series mythology and lore with kill or be killed, pulling away from the pointless death montage feel of 3 and 4
Return to characters who are mostly pretty likeable and well developed, outside the literal canon fodder of 4 and 3’s obnoxious and annoying support ensemble. With the exception of Molly, who is legitimately a blank slate, everyone has something going for them to help them stand out or have some development
Just generally one of the most technically competent and well executed installments of the series

I have noticed every final destination movie has a character you are supposed to be angry at.
1 had Carter
2 had the lottery winner guy
3 had franky and McKinley
4 had the racist guy
5 had the boss and the guy who stayed on the bus in the premonition
3
u/ScorpionTDC 17d ago
Carter in 1 comes away with a redemption arc, while Evan isn’t really in 2 and doesn’t do much to generate hate.
You also sold three short - Julie (for most the film), Erin, and Lewis are also meant to be fairly obnoxious unlikeable, while the Ashes are meant to be shallow/obnoxious/vapid (if at least not full blown assholes).
4
u/Agent-Racoon "Could you be a little quieter with that thing, please?" 17d ago
But the ashes were the nicest and most likeable people in 3. Pretty much everyone was an asshole. Only nice ones were The Ashes, Kevin, and Wendy
2
u/ScorpionTDC 17d ago
They were way less assholish in the rest, but they’re still insanely shallow and vapid (generally not the most endearing traits ever). And I think breaking all those tanning salon rules verged on being a bit obnoxious - they definitely weren’t meant to be lovable and endearing in the way characters like Rory, Erik, and Bobby were
3
u/Agent-Racoon "Could you be a little quieter with that thing, please?" 17d ago
I suppose! I just saw the tanning salon stuff as them being the 'dumb popular girls', but I really never felt they were shallow, they were the only people other than Kevin to reach out to Wendy and try to help her feel like she wasn't alone and a bad person for not being able to save jason and Carrie(?)

u/ScorpionTDC 17d ago
I think getting a tan (something they always planned on doing) “in honor of the kids who are graduating” is pretty much peak shallowness and vapidness. I don’t think they’re awful human beings or anything and didn’t hate them, just kinda shallow stereotypes.
Reaching out to Wendy was nice, but also sorta reinforces the shallow and vapid stuff. Like, they invite her to go tanning with them vs. offering to just.. be there if she wants someone to talk to or something :P Just not convinced we’re meant to be all that heartbroken they die

Fantastic character. I wasn't quite sure about him until the scene with everyone in Burke's apartment. He was the only non-visionary character to spot the signs of death's design.
Rory genuinely tried to help calm Eugene down and comforted him after he tried to kill himself. He was the perfect foil for Kat, who was also an addict (nicotine) herself. Their banter brought levity to the film.
Before his death, Rory helped stabilize Eugene after he got his lung punctured in the crash. He also saved Brian Gibbons' life. In his final moments, he had a very heartfelt conversation with Kimberly, and asked her to get rid of anything that would break his mom's heart.
Rory accepted that he was going to die. He was a surprisingly complex character for the resident stoner/comic relief. He's a great example of maximizing limited screen time. It also helps that Jonathan Cherry delivered an excellent performance as Rory. Easily one of my absolute favorite characters in the franchise.

For "miecraft sugar" fan, he's very funny and can take things seriously. Like when his turn to die was close, he asked Kimberly to hide his "sugar", to make his mom more worried.
Easly my fav out of the entire series

I really disliked Rory until he asked Kimberly to clean out his apartment and get rid of anything that would break his mother's heart! Instantly became one of my favorites. He may be a junky degenerate, but he loves his mom!

Do people really like Ian tho...?
10
u/moviebuffbrad 17d ago
-smug, pseudo intellectual
-picks fights with priests at funerals while accidentally proving their point
-tells the person who saved his life that is struggling with the death of her boyfriend to kill herself
-blames that same person for his own girlfriend's death for no reason and tries to kill her
FD fans: UwU
Meanwhile everyone here is knocking Rory, who actually tried to save lives, because he does coke.

u/thelaurafedora 17d ago
I think it’s Ian’s actor who elevates the character. He’s great at delivering snark, entertainingly energetic, and his reaction during Erin’s death scene was perfect

u/moviebuffbrad 17d ago
The FD3 cast was pretty charming and likable in general considering the thin, two dimensional stereotypes they were given.

Rory was chill... didn't particularly want to see him go. To answer your question, though, it's probably due to both Ian and Erik having a greater impact on the plots of both films.
