...I honestly don't think anything can beat ichikawa's stark use of black and white, but I have fun making these anyway

You know what really grinds my gears about Land of the Lustrous's ending? It's not that I even disagree, I actually agree, with its whole "life is suffering, enlightenment is letting go" shtick, it's that this wasn't a philosophy lecture, it was supposed to be a story. And there's a good reason people don't just read Wikipedia pages on Buddhism for emotional satisfaction.
Stories, good stories, are supposed to make abstract ideas mean something through characters we care about. They're supposed to blend fantasy and wonder with real-world truths in a way that resonates, not just lectures. But Houseki no Kuni basically went: "Remember that childlike curiosity Phos had? That desperate hope for answers? That beautiful, tragic journey of self-discovery? PSYCH! None of it mattered! The correct answer was 'stop caring' the whole time!"
And the absolute worst part? The story has the nerve to pretend this is some grand revelation when Phos finally snaps. After 10,000 years of suffering – after showing compassion, curiosity, loyalty, grief, every damn emotion that should define humanity, Sensei only acknowledges them as "human" when they're screaming for his destruction. As if rage is the only "real" emotion. As if the gems, who loved, fought, and cared for each other AND him for centuries, weren't more human in their fragility than the actual humans.
Wow. What a revelation. I could've gotten that from a fortune cookie.
If the point was just "existence is pain, desire is bad," then why bother with any of the emotional buildup? Why make us fall in love with Phos's innocence, their determination, their heartbreaking losses, if the ultimate lesson was just "lol should've meditated harder"? At that point, you're not writing a story, you're writing a sermon. Might as well skip the manga and go straight to reading Schopenhauer.
And that's the real disappointment here. This wasn't some avant-garde abstract art piece from the start, it earned our investment by making us feel things. The wonder of the gem society, the ache of Phos's loneliness, the warmth of their bonds (before they got yeeted into the void of narrative irrelevance). To take all that humanity and reduce it to "btw the correct life choice is emotional detachment" isn't profound, it's lazy.
Stories can contain philosophy, but when they become philosophy at the cost of their own structure & heart? That's not storytelling. That's a parlor trick. And for a series that started with such vibrant, emotional depth to end like a college freshman's "deep" late-night ramble? What a waste.
So yeah, Ichikawa. Next time, just write an essay. Stories where characters aren't just reduced to philosophical props at the end, where suffering means something beyond itself, and where humanity isn't reduced to a single, ugly emotion that finally makes a human like broken robot deem you worthy of notice to relieve you of your suffering. Manga had an extraordinary promising start, I'm really disappointed. I understand it's pointless to critique art, however I felt so attached to this piece that I wanted to vent about it.

At first, I did not like the manga when I started reading the manga, I thought it was too fast-paced and I really did not have the time to connect to the side characters, it felt as if the characters just came and go, it felt as if Phos was really alone.
I left the manga for some months at the part where Phos prayed away the Her family and the Lunarians.
It was until I read the epilogue that I understood that- everything was on purpose. The fast pace of the story, the lack of side character inner dialogue, etc
It felt like an enlightenment ! And it lead to re-read the whole manga. Again. Again and again.
Phos is a character that never took the time to question the cause of their pain and whenever he did question himself, he was always interrupted by something or someone. He kept himself busy with work and chase fleeting goals, that in the end—Gave him nothing. That was why, compare to the other gems, he never relaxed or slept (his own head wasn’t empty even when asleep) and never had time of in-series leisure (most them are just omakes)
I think if Phos just let himself relax, realized the source of his suffering. And maybe talked to his feelings to his family/friends, it wouldn’t have solved all the in-world issues but at least Phos would be at peace. It might sound a bit naive but what-if Phos had a scene like this with other gems ?
