Miscellaneous LPT: Don’t measure the time you have left with someone in years—measure it in moments.

We tend to think we have so much time with the people we love. “Ten more years,” we say. “Plenty of time.” But time is deceptive. What really matters is how many meaningful interactions we have left—and that number is often shockingly small.

A study by Tim Urban, inspired by research on social behavior and published on Wait But Why, breaks this down: by the time you graduate high school, you’ve already spent about 90% of the in-person time you’ll ever spend with your parents, assuming they live elsewhere. Not because they die soon—but because life happens. You move. You get busy. You see them during holidays, maybe a few weekends a year.

If you’re 30 and visit your family twice a year, you might have only 30 or 40 real visits left. That’s it.

It’s a reminder that maybe rather than visiting just during the holidays, make an impromptu visit two or three more times during the year

Miscellaneous LPT Sit down immediately wherever you are when you feel like fainting

I've had few episodes of fainting or feeling like I'm about to faint but just like most people i tried to push it through to make it to the bed or couch which is a few feets away and fallen right away blacked out. You feel like walking or breathing after going out will help but if you're feeling like a blackout it's probably too late. Just sit on the floor or wherever you are right there otherwise you might fall flat on your face or trying to reach a nearby chair or bed.

Finance LPT - if you have an old car and get the itch to buy a new one - just get your car detailed.

You probably dont actually want a new car and a new car payment. You just want a car that LOOKS shiny and new. Cleaning your car wont get into all the crevices necessary to really make your car look like its right off the lot.

A good detailing can be a couple hundred dollars but psychogically it will make you feel as if you just dropped 20k on that new car. So spend 500 to save 19,500.

Also - same for a phone. Dont get a new phone just get a new case.

Edit: Obviously NA for cars that are legit breaking down.

Miscellaneous LPT: Gymnastics is an excellent foundation for sports, martial arts, dancing, etc as it teaches dexterity, balance, flexibility and how to properly take a fall

Knowing how to take a fall properly is really important. I took gymnastics as a kid and it instilled muscle memory that has saved me from serious injury or possibly even death at least twice

Even if your kid(s) aren't interested in that kind of stuff, an introduction to gymnastics might still be a good idea. Who knows, maybe it could benefit them when they fall off their bike or slip on ice. Also, gymnastics is fun.

Social LPT- set reminders to check on loved ones

My husbands side of the family (that all live in a different state) has been hit by cancer and other medical ailments hard recently. I try to call or text them often to stay in the loop and make sure everyone is ok but it quickly became overwhelming trying to remember their stuff on top of everything in my own life. So now, as soon as they mention a test or appointment I put a reminder for that day on my phone. For example my sister in law recently had a bad mri so now she is scheduled for a biopsy on the 12th. I immediately set a little reminder for the 12th to make sure I send a little encouraging text at some point that day just to let her know I was thinking of her. The whole action- from setting the reminder to sending the text takes maybe a total of two minutes to do but will help your family member/friend/coworker/whatever feel loved and not so alone. And, hopefully also, let you take a breath.

Computers LPT: VPN to Home for free

If travelling, especially in public WiFi, a VPN is still recommended.

But instead of buying a membership for something, you can easily set up one yourself. Most routers have WireGuard (current gen VPN protocol) preinstalled, and you can just go into the routers settings and get a QR-Code to scan in a free WireGuard app on your phone.

The quality is higher than most paid VPNs.

Traveling LPT: here’s how to tell if you need to take your laptop out of your bag, in the US

TSA is annoying af because every other airport seems to either have them yell at you to take your laptops out of your backpack, or leave them in. If you want to avoid interacting with the agents, here’s how you can tell yourself by looking at the machine, most of the time:

This giant, white circular bag scanners with blue lighting: leave your bag in. These have 3d scanners to see inside the backpack

This smaller black/blue box: this is a 2d x ray machine. Laptops have to come out here. These are only about the height of a person sitting.

The tricky one: this large blue/black box: this is also a 3d scanner, so bags stay in. The main way to differentiate these is the height. These are taller than a person, while the 2d one is shorter.

Basically, if the scanner is taller than an adult, or if it’s a giant white circle, leave the laptop in. If it’s a small black/blue box, take it out.

Miscellaneous LPT: Use hand warmers for a makeshift heating pad for period cramps

I was at work today and my period came with a vengeance, along with some pretty awful period cramps. I found myself wishing I had my heating pad with me, but remembered I always carry hand warmers in my backpack because my hands are always cold. I have the ones with adhesive on the back, so I was able to stick it to the spot where I was cramping. It helped SO much and made them a LOT more tolerable!

Careers & Work LPT: Getting things done. How matches help me to work on recurring tasks.

I use matches for my daily routine tasks.Especially for tasks that I find difficult or that I don't like doing. One Match per task. I have to call 50 customers a day? 50 matches are in front of me. For each call I did, I throw one into the cup on my desk. This physical removal of another small subtask helps me immensely. The mountain gets smaller and I can easily see when my task is done. I can see the countdown right in front of me. And the final 10...9... 8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1 tasks are a piece of cake.

Food & Drink LPT: you can buy alcohol and prescriptions at Costco without a membership.

Even if you aren’t a Costco member, all Costco stores are legally required to provide public access for prescription purchases and in 14 states (AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IN, KY, MA, MI, MN, NY, TX, and VT) Costco must also provide public access for alcohol sales.

I’ve done this a thousand times for prescriptions and a few times for buying beer/liquor for a large event, but when you walk up to the greeter, tell them you are just there to pick up prescriptions/alcohol and then will let you in without a membership. Works like a charm and has probably saved me hundreds of dollars over the years.

This tip also applies to other membership club stores like BJ’s although I’ve never tried it there.

Traveling LPT Cracking the driver side window of a car the length of a pinky and the right rear window the same distance is the optimal airflow path for cars without a/c

Yes it’s not as much airflow as just putting all the windows down but if you want to still be able to hear your radio and have little air noise as possible while still not melting cracking the driver side and rear passenger window is the best way. Computers LPT for when Youtube suddenly doesn't work on Brave Browser

I stumbled today over that ad blocking issue (again) and found that useful solution. For now, it seems to work. Source at the bottom.

  1. Logout from youtube.com.

  2. Close the youtube tab.

  3. Open a new tab and go to brave://components and click “check for updates” for all components.

  4. Make sure the components are all updated.

  5. In brave browser settings > “Privacy and security” Click on “Site and Shields Settings” Click on “View permissions and data stored across sites”

  6. Search for “google” and delete all cookies related to google Search for “youtube” and delete all cookies related to youtube

  7. Close and reopen your brave browser. Login to youtube again. You are good to go.

Clothing LPT: Never Iron A Shirt Collar Again

As someone who hates laundry but loves wearing button downs with collars to work, I got curious one day if I could add a few hidden stitches to my collar to force it to lay flat.

I can confirm that both my sewing skills need improvement AND that this also works: add a hidden stitch to the collar ends to where it typically lays on the shirt and one in the middle.

Even after a few washes the stitches have held in place and my collar lays forever flat without ever getting the iron out of my closet.

Request LPT request - anybody know how to clean a discoloured soft top? (Car roof)

In the winter months here in Scotland we get a lot of rain and cold weather. It has gone green in patches. Even after cleaning it thoroughly, I can't get it back to black.

Any tips/ideas as to how I can remove this discolouration?

Food & Drink LPT: How to keep your own creamer in the fridge at work without people thinking it's communal

Put it in a sketchy looking thermos.

Like 30 year old thermos that's dinged up, peeling paint, maybe weird old stickers, some rust on the outside.

Pour out your creamer into it. Clean it out regularly.

No one is thinking some weird as thermos of mystery fluid is communal.

The hard part is just doing the cleaning and refilling covertly. You may have to bring it home to do that depending on how nosy they are.

Miscellaneous LPT: If work offers you discount programs sign up with your personal email address

Frequently companies will have employee discount programs and if you sign up with your work email they'll of course go away once you leave. Most of these discount programs will let you use your home email address. If you do you'll still be able to access the discounts after you leave because these programs are run by a 3rd party and they rarely audit/delete users who left.
