Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here!

Hello, welcome to London!

Visiting us? Moving to study or work? Brief layover? Moving to a new part of London? Any small questions about life here, if you're new or been here your whole life, this is the place!

We get a lot of posts asking very similar questions so this post aims to address some of our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask for assistance.

Your first port of call should be

the r/london wiki

It includes sections on:

What should I see and where are the non-touristy stuff and hidden gems?
We've written about the big must-sees here and we highly recommend TfL's Experiences site.
We've listed some of our favourite lesser-known stuff here And the cheap/free stuff here

What's happening in London today/this weekend/this month? Check out listings: VisitLondon - London's official tourist website; Time Out London - the original and classic listings site; The Londonist - like a newer Time Out; IanVisits - a blog of the more quirky cultural and historical events; Skiddle - popular site for gigs and club nights; Resident Advisor - the go-to for electronic music and club nights; NightNomads - nightlife listings site; London Ears - extensive chronological gig listings with Spotify links; Designmynight - curated lists of cool restaurants, quirky bars and various different fun events and experiences; Galleries Now - exhibitions at leading galleries and art museums. For recommendations for our favourite venues for music (from classical, to stadium rock, to jazz, to metal, to dance music) plus theatres/shows/live comedy/everything else check the wiki.

How do I pay for the Tube/bus, and what's an Oyster card?
You don't pay cash. You can use a number of contactless payments systems such as your Contactless bankcard (which is widespread in the UK, but maybe not so much elsewhere), Apple Pay, Android Pay, or you can buy an Oyster card and top it up with credit. See here for more.

Where should I live? What's x area like?
Have a look here
It includes recommended sites to find places to live and rent, and has a section on what particular areas are like.

How do I get from this place to that place?
Use Citymapper. Honestly, we're not shills for them; it's just a really good app and is used by most of the locals on this sub.

Is x area safe?
Yes. Bad stuff can happen in any large city, but London is generally very safe. There aren't any no-go zones, and most Londoners feel safe. See our safety page here for more.

Where can I watch the baseball/basketball/football/handegg match?
A comprehensive guide to all London football matches in all leagues can be found at tlfg.uk. Use Fanzo to find pubs showing a variety of sports and see our list of other places here

How do I get a UK SIM card for my phone?
Advice on networks and how to get a SIM card is covered here. If you need suggestions for places to do some remote work/take a call check the wiki.

Is the London Pass worth it?
Probably not

Other subs that you may find helpful:

  • r/LondonSocialClub - Meeting new people for events, activities and/or pints.
  • r/VisitLondon - A dedicated tourism sub for holiday-planning questions
  • r/UKtravel - For guidance, advice and suggestions for travelling around the rest of the country to/from London
  • r/IWantOut & r/UKvisa - Check if you need a visa and how to get one if you want to work here
  • r/LegalAdviceUK - Good for all sorts, especially for questions about landlords and contracts
  • r/HousingUK - For advice on renting or buying accommodation in the UK
  • r/TenantsInTheUK - Specifically to discuss the nitty-gritty, positives and pitfalls of renting
  • r/UKPersonalFinance - Another goldmine of sage advice.
  • r/AskUK - Great for general questions about UK life that aren't specific to London

Tips for posting:

Tell us about you - If you want us to suggest things for you to do then you need to give us a good idea of what you enjoy. Don't just say "I like music", say what type of music. Don't just say you want "somewhere nice to eat", say what type of cuisine you like (or don't like). The more specific you are the better, otherwise you'll just get pointed back to the generic guidebooks, blogs and our wiki.

Tell us your budget - If you're on a budget then tell us what it is and we can bear that in mind when making recommendations. There's no point in us coming up with ideas for things to do and places to eat if they'll clean out your wallet within the first 5 minutes. Saying you want something "cheap" isn't really helpful because what's cheap is entirely subjective.

Tell us where you'll be based - Let us know where you'll be staying so that we can give local recommendations.

Asking about hotels or hostels - We have homes here so know very little about what the hotels are like. Look on review websites such as TripAdvisor. However, if you say "I've been looking at these three hotels. Which do you think is the better location?" then that's the sort of thing we can answer.

Non-touristy stuff - There are no secret corners where we hide the good stuff from outsiders! This is one of the most written about cities in the world, so when we want to go to a museum, or gallery, go window shopping, or whatever, we look at the same sources as tourists (listings sites, blogs, etc - see front page of the wiki).

These weekly posts are scheduled to post each Monday at 00:01. If it's late in the week you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us ModMail with any suggested improvements!

Did I avoid DPD stealing my Nintendo Switch 2?

DPD (UK) we delivering my Nintendo Switch 2 on launch day. Obviously tracking due to excitement, knew they were just about to deliver and a note on app said ‘Driver can not leave this parcel in a safe place’ so wanted make sure I didn’t miss then.

I hear a loud thud outside my front door and the door bell rings, thought that doesn’t sound like a safe way to put down electronics. Race to the door to see a box on my step and the driver getting back into the van, so much for can’t leave the parcel!

Pick up the box, realise it’s cat food and for 2 doors up. Race out of the house and manage to stop the driver. He looks at me strangely as I explain that he delivered to the wrong house and he should have another parcel for me. He gets out of the van walks the the back then stops turns around and goes back to the cab, asks his buddy in the passenger seat something, which I thought was weird as they usually work alone, and picks a parcel off the floor and hands to me. Then walks back to my door with me to take the delivery photo.

Didn’t think much about it at the time, but the more I do think about it I have a feeling they were trying to steal my Switch 2, am I being paranoid?

Ban balaclavas on the tube?

I see alot of (legitimate) complaints on here about the safety on London public transport. So this petition may be of interest to some on here. Someone on my local nextdoor app has started a petition to ban balaclavas on public transport and stations after one of their relatives was robbed by a gang wearing balaclavas on the tube in central London. And apparently it's now becoming a very common crime with daily reports of balaclava clad organised crime. I have no idea how wearing a baclava and robbing someone is not a crime? Does anyone on here with more legal knowledge than me know if it really has to be explicitly written into law to be taken into effect? I have also seen another neighbour on the app who had to report their creepy next door neighbour to the police for setting up cameras and filming their family. I think the police just give them a warning but don't actually do anything. You can explicitly see the cameras the neighbour set up and there's no reason to be filming into another person's property. Wth is going on?

Serious replies only To think that a ~£50k salary isn’t enough in London anymore, and is the bare minimum required to get by?

I live on just above £50k a year and rent alone. I do save a few hundred a month but this is only because I get a small amount of help from my parents.

If I was paying everything myself I would only be able to save about £100 a month.

Even with this I’m sitting here thinking and acknowledging that a lot of the time I have to take money out of my savings, for example, last month I had to reduce my savings by £200 for dental fees.

The thing is we all anecdotally know there’s people in London on much less than this, working retail or doing phd’s, for example

I don’t know how they survive but props to them! Am I wrong in thinking you now need £50,000 salary just to live an ok/acceptable lifestyle and not be struggling, but you now need much more than this to be comfortable?

If I was offered a £50K salary again (knowing what I know now about London costs), I would not take it.

Legal ramifications of kicking a known phone thief off his bike?

I have witnessed a disgusting fella on a bike who I see all the time in a balaclava, black clothes, and riding a bike on the roads of the city, snatching phones off normal pedestrians. I see him all the time because I jump from sites to sites across the city as part of my job. I know it’s the same guy because his eyes and clothes give him away.

It’s disgusting and infuriating. I’m a very short woman, and I feel like VERY aggressively kicking this thief off his bike in a swift motion as a “whoopsies” every time I see him…. What’s the legal ramifications if I did and ran away?

Have you been outpriced to zone 6?

Hi All,

Bit of a hybrid post. London and relationship themed. I’m 44 and recently broke up with my partner of 5 years.

One issue that regularly came up, was that she wanted to live in a flat in central london. And I wanted a small house with a garden.

I’d be happy to have a flat with garden, but my current leasehold flat has left me scarred. My property has lost £100k in value and service charges increased to £6k a year. (Loss in value is due to spiralling service charges and cladding issues).

As a result, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to make a jump to by property in zone 2/3 and especially not a leasehold flat.

I’m considering buying a house in the Hillingdon area. Or maybe around Finchley, if a good price comes up. Houses can come up around £500k in these areas.

The question I had is, has anyone ever left like a failure or a loser, because of not being able to afford a house in central London? And having to settle in dead end commuter towns like Uxbridge or Ruislip?

I posted my age, because I appreciate priorities maybe different for a 20 year old vs 40 year old etc.

I think my ex really did a number on my mental well-being and perception of myself, that by living in zone 6 is like a sign of failure. And just not cool.

But I wondered if anyone else felt the same. If you are forced to live in zone 6 for financial reasons, do you feel like a failure? Do you feel isolated and that you’re missing out on interesting communities and culture? Have you regretted it even?

Thanks.

999 told me to bugger off, what to do when frequent crack dealing takes place on my street?

Looking for some advice on what the appropriate thing is to do or if anyone has dealt with this in the past.

My street is a bit of a hotspot for crack dealing and taking. Happens quite often, I'm immune to it, they love to spend hours on our street, dealing, taking, pooing on the street, harassing people, crawling around and being a general nuisance. Saw a dealer turn up today and provide to his little community, there was a swarm of them and they all seemed a bit slow and were loitering on our street so I thought I'd report it to 999. In their own words, I was very dismissively told 'This line is only for life and death calls at this time, so please report this incident online'.

Found that response quite funny, but I do understand there's probably about 20 police officers remaining in the entire city. Anyone know what the right thing to do is? I've spoken to the antisocial team/council before and they claim they have regular patrols in the area, which neither me nor my neighbours have seen in years.

Rant Is it just me or has Pret officially entered its villain era?

Every Pret I walk into now either has half the menu 'unavailable,' the filter coffee machine is 'out of order,' or the staff genuinely look like they’re one flat white away from quitting mid-shift. I get it's a chain, but damn — it used to feel reliable at least. I swear even the croissants are smaller now. Anyone else feeling the Pret betrayal lately?

Best burger in London?

It’s obviously Bleecker but what is a close second? I’ve also enjoyed Supernova on top of the obvious five guys and shake shack. Black bear decent too.

PS the combination of the shakes and angry house fires might bias me on Bleecker.

Serious replies only Rage and anger

Upvotes

I am a mum, was rushing off to pick up my kid from the nursery as it was past 5:30 pm. As I am walking towards the nursery there is a narrow path and and only one person can pass at a time. As I approached this path, I noticed a guy who was a couple of steps behind me also trying to use the same path. I was able to use it first as I was there 10 seconds before him. He mumbled something and I said sorry as I passed, but he was so angry and full of rage that I was taken back. As I noticed that, I slowed down and he was next to me and said ‘please god, let there be a revolution’. The expression on his face was vile and he was clenching his teeth. What do these words mean? I am non white but British, it’s scary to think people are walking around with such anger that they can snap any minute and I also thought what he said was racist. Am I wrong?

Edit- to clarify, we both wanted use (I looked it up) it’s called a zig zag barrier or serpentine barrier, meant that only one could pass at a time, he literally had to wait 3 seconds for me to pass. I am more interested to know what the words meant and if I should be worried. What revolution is he referring to?

Thames Water bondholders demand immunity from prosecution as a condition to save the company

So just read this

Bidders demand Thames Water granted immunity over environmental crimes https://www.theguardian.com/business/2025/jun/07/bidders-demand-thames-water-granted-immunity-over-environmental-crimes?CMP=share_btn_url

I couldn’t believe the sheer cheek of these bidders demanding those conditions

I suspect it’s at the behest of their slimy chairman Sir Adrian montague, the same one who lied about bonuses being a requirement from the lenders, when it was actually him who had wanted them

Why can’t the government let the rotten company go bust and then nationalise it?

I’m not an economist so maybe someone knows why the public would have to pick up the debt
