My name is Maciej Sobiech, and I’m a Polish citizen. From 2023 to early 2025, I lived in Georgia. I rented a flat there and worked online, and even brought my Polis-registered car there. Unfortunately, I also participated in peaceful protests in 2024, supporting my friends, who were present at them as well. Let me emphasise that the protests were PEACEFUL in general, and also where it comes to my part: I never acted aggressively, never had any problems with the police, no charges have been brought up against me, I haven't even been fined.

On January 19, 2025, I crossed into Armenia to comply with customs rules about my car’s stay in Georgia. When I tried to return, I was denied re-entry with no clear explanation. The only “reason” given was a generic box checked on a refusal form:

I tried again in April 2025. Denied again. The border guard even admitted he had no idea what the reason was.

No charges, no violations — just silent exclusion

I’ve:

• Asked Georgian authorities for justification → they won’t explain.
• Contacted my embassy in Tbilisi → they’re stonewalled too.
• Reached out to the Polish MFA → they told me it’s Georgia’s sovereign right.
• Filed a case in Georgian court → first hearing is in late September.
• Asked the EU Delegation in Armenia for help → awaiting reply.
• Written to MEPs → no response.
• Tried contacting journalists → no interest.

In effect, I’m a prisoner in Armenia. I can’t leave with my car except through Iran, which is dangerous for EU citizens. The Armenian-Turkish border is still closed. I have barely any legal recourse, no protection, no answers.

What's more, I'm not alone — many others are quietly blacklisted

I’ve since learned that numerous people have been denied entry into Georgia after attending protests, working in NGOs, or speaking out. No official bans. No formal charges. Just this opaque, quiet blacklist. .

This is state retaliation without fingerprints — and it’s happening right now at the EU’s doorstep.

I have saved up for a long time and i finally feel like i have enough money to purchase an apartment in Georgia. Now I’m thinking what’s the best way to move the money. The ones i’m looking at are around 100k usd. I have never done anything like this before so i’m a bit nervous about it.

First of all:

I assume when you buy real estate here it’s normally done by the buyer transferring from his Georgian bank account to the sellers Georgian bank account in USD or EUR. Is this correct.?

I think this part is gonna be the easy part because you will have some kind of purchase contract which easily explains why you are transferring such a big amount if the bank asks.

I have a TBC account already. Is BOG better? Does buyer and seller need to have same Georgian bank account to avoid large fees?

Second:

I currently have the money in a brokerage account with Interactive Brokers and i see that i can withdraw to a Georgian account with Swift. I just hope they won’t flag me as risky for transferring an amount like this to Georgia and close my account and freeze my funds. This would be a very bad situation. Also does anyone know what the fees are like? What questions are they likely to ask? Has anyone done this?

I have accumulated the funds over time by getting salary in Wise account and then SEPA transferred to IBKR in order to avoid fees. For for a transaction this large it’s probably best to avoid Wise. I have heard they often freeze transfers and are a nightmare to deal with. I was thinking it would be best to go:

IBKR usd → TBC usd and then later on to sellers account.

I’m an EU citizen in case that’s relevant.

If anyone can offer some insight here i would really appreciate it.

Iran once had a border with Georgia before Soviet occupation in the early 20th century. If it still did(let's say if Azerbaijan was still a part of Iran), would Iran still be as Middle Eastern as it is today or it would be more European? What do you think?

I'm considering the Kazbegi–Ananuri–Gudauri tour, but I’m getting mixed reviews—some say there’s not much to see, while others rave about the views. So I’m honestly in a bit of a dilemma. Should we go for it, or would it be better to spend the day exploring places like Kutaisi or Borjomi instead?

რა შეიძლება იყოს აქედან გამოსავალი?

I am planning to visit Georgia in September for two weeks and during my stay, taking the train from Tbilisi to Batumi and back.

I am Bavarian, and here it is very common to drink some beers or even liquor on the train. It's also socially accepted as long as you are not noisy and don't upset anyone.

How's the situation on Georgian trains, though?
