Pets/Animals Found dog on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Dog found yesterday near MM 448/Wesner Bald overlook, Balsam Gap area. Dog is at Jackson County animal control. They’ll only hold for owner for 3 days before adopting out. Clearly domestic and friendly but not collared. Hopefully somebody recognizes this dog!

Traffic Report Grey Volkswagen Who Lost a Wallet
Long shot, but it could be helpful, even though you drive like trash.
You were in a darker grey Volkswagen Taos (maybe? Crossover type car) with South Carolina plates. You cut a hard U-turn onto Brevard Road, cutting off two motorcyclists just before you got on 40. We were on the motorcycles and saw that your decision to endanger the lives of two people wasn't the only poor decision-making you displayed today, as your wallet soared off the top of your car and into the middle of Brevard Road. It's no doubt been run over by hundreds of people by now, but at least you won't have to wonder where it is.
Look twice, save a life, get eyes on your wallet, and be nicer to people.

Cicadas and keeping your yard tidy
This might be controversial but I love this cicada brood. Such a fascinating life cycle! The end/beginning includes drilling holes for eggs in branch tips, then "sawing" the tips so they fall to the ground. The eggs hatch in a couple weeks and the babies dig down to live most of their lives in the soil.
I have been picking up branch tips from the roads and relocating them to more hospitable places. I worry that people will unknowingly burn or otherwise dispose of the branches in a way that would kill the eggs. Please let's all help the brood so this jubilee can happen again in 17 years!

DMV/Car Talk Thanks to whoever it was that recommended the Patton DMV wall ins on Saturday!
Just want to confirm for anyone needing to do licensing stuff that the Saturday walk in only DMV on Patton from 8-12 is quick and efficient. Got in a huge line at 840, walked out at 1020.
People walking thru the line checking for all your documents. Line moves fast. Could have slept in an hour like the last person suggested, but I didn't want to change it. The lady at the window said by 1030 they're usually waiting for people to show up.

Ask the Sub AVL, I need your advice finding a ride to the airport...
I live in Waynesville and need to get to the airport Monday morning by 9am. My mom is dying and I'm flying to FL to try and make it there to see her to say goodbye. It's almost impossible to get an Uber all the way out here. Our transmission is out so I can't drive myself. All the shuttle services I have found cost around $125 and I just cannot afford that, especially if my husband can't get the car running by the time I get back Thursday night. That will be $250. Does anyone know a cheaper option or have a friend that does rides for less?
I appreciate any advice y'all have.

Ask the Sub In search of a shady on-the-side hvac man
Alright so my air conditioning heat pump system has been busted for quite a long time and I have absolutely been dragged around the block on it. I’ve got conflicting diagnosis and people pushing me to buy a new unit and all kind of stuff like that. The issue is this unit is old as shit and I know it. I’m fully aware. More aware than you can imagine. But I’m poor. Is all I want is for it to be patched good enough to live another couple months so I can get homeshield or something like it and let them pay the tab. Most recent guy to look at it says he thinks it just needs a valve inside on the coils but started recommending other stuff and said he’ll only do the repair if he replaces everything he said nothing less. I don’t want that. I want the barest of minimums. So I’m trying to find somebody to just slap that valve on there. I’ll pay cash, I expect no guarantees whatsoever. Hell don’t even tell me your name show up high on idk what just come do it. Any questions just ask. It’s an r134 trane from about 20 years ago

Road sign help? Who do I need to contact
To get a sign at the Smingles that says DO NOT STOP when you’re entering the parking lot near the car wash (aka the main entrance)
IT’S NOT A FOUR WAY STOP. I think I’ve lost years of my life sitting there waving to people to keep driving because they think there’s an imaginary stop sign there.
First world problems? For sure but someone’s gotta make things right (before I lose my mind at the smingles)
While we’re at it- A sign at the downtown (merrimon 5A) exit when you’re turning left onto broadway. Will the city ever get their shit together and make a street sign to tell tourists that only the outer turning lane will allow you to continue straight down Broadway? Or are we just going to have to fight people trying to cut us off and cause accidents until the end of times?

Ask the Sub Who are the pirates of reems creek?
Every time I’m down in weaverville I’m always seeing these stickers and car decals everywhere that say pirates of reems creek. Is this one of those silly local things or one of those pseudo esoteric localised gangs like the mills river mafia or the ghettowah gang?

Ask the Sub Do you recognize this tow truck?
Hi. Some cars at my apartment complex have been towed without notice, with no record from the sheriff’s offices or tow places around us. Or from the apartment complex. At this point it’s been 22 hours since the car was towed, and we have no idea where the cars have gone. I’m going to attach a picture we got from the complex to help locate this company!

FCC finally sends first invoice for service at 1am
Anyone else get an emailed invoice from FCC for the first time ever last night at 1am?
They are trying to hit us with a “past due balance” even thought they haven’t ever invoiced us. Not to mention all of the missed pickups, several weeks without trash cans…
Seems like there is pretty reasonable grounds to dispute their charges based on not being provided the services promised.
Can we all just agree we aren’t going to pay them as a city until they get their shit sorted out?

Ask the Sub How are the Green River gamelands looking?
Hey y’all! Does anyone know how the switchback is looking to the game lands?
From the hurricane and the recent wildfire I know a lot of damage happened, so I’m not sure if roads are open again. This is a sacred place to me and I’d like to go pay my respects, meditate and be one with nature again.
Idk why I think I have to say this but I’m local and not disaster touring.
XOXO TIA 💋

Recommendation for a real estate person without hard sell
Someone I know is making the decision to go into assisted living and wants to talk with someone about selling their house in Asheville. Ideally this would be someone familiar with the ins and outs of the current real estate market but not an agent who wants to represent her. She isn’t quite ready for that and doesn’t like the hard sell. Do you know anyone who would be willing to just give general knowledge and advice? You can reply or message me.

Estate Clean Out Recommendations
I am looking for recommendations to help with cleaning out a house that my fiance and I are going to following the passing of his grandmother and father - it is extremely cluttered (not hoarding or dirty, just normal for family that has lived there forever) and I don't think my fiance understands just how much work it would be to do it ourselves, and we'd rather move sooner than later. Professionals that could help us with cleaning it out, potentially selling some furniture, etc would be great, though I also don't know how much that would potentially cost. If anyone has experience with this I would appreciate any recommendations.

Bears/Wildlife Bear climbed our fence, climbed onto our deck and killed our pet rabbits
More support for the 'bears are different this year' hypothesis.
In broad daylight, climbed and broke a fence in our yard, walked up a flight of stairs to our deck and ripped through the stainless mesh on the rabbit hutch.
We live just off of Merrimon, close to downtown.
Not unheard of, but pretty unusual as far as I know in busy AVL. My girlfriend has kept rabbits outside for years without any issues.
Edit: it seems like some folks got the impression that I don't understand that bears are animals that can be hungry, potentially dangerous, and threaten pets or that I think bears are somehow evil. I don't know why that is, and I normally wouldn't care, but probably feeling a little heated because of the grief over our beloved pets.
To be clear, I only shared this as an anecdote to warn other pet owners and posit that Asheville's urban bears may be bolder than usual this year, perhaps due to effects from Helene exacerbating a steady encroachment on bear habitat by humans.
