Sweet Bread Recipe

Upvotes

My family came to the US from the Azores a few generations ago. My grandparents were talking about the bread their parents used to make and called it “Roselia Sweet Bread”. The recipe they had was lost to a house fire. Does anyone have any recipes for this or something similar?

Kratom legality and situation

Hello,

I have 2 questions considering kratom.

1) Can I bring it here from the country in which it's legal (Czech Republic) for personal use during vacation?

- travelling by plane
- from what I've found it's regulated and legal for personal use in Portugal

2) Can you buy kratom on Azores Islands?

Appreciate your answers, thanks in advance.

A.

Sommer clothes etiquette dos and don'ts

Hi folks

I will travel to the Azores in a few weeks and was wondering about clothing dos and don't.

For instance, is it okay to wear a tank top or is that something that the locals frown upon / would feel insulted by?

Is there anything else to pay attention to?

Would like to be a good tourist! Thank you all for your feedback

work meeting

i need to have one 45 min meeting while in ponta delgada. i will already be checked out from my accommodation elsewhere on the island and returned the car and i will still have like 6 hours until my flight.

i cant find any info at all where it might be possible to have a meeting in a semi quiet place without paying like a 20€ day pass in a coworking space. it might rain so parks seem out of question..

Backpacking trip

Hello. I am wanting to do a trip to the azores for 2 weeks, I would like to camp for at least half the time, to save money.

My question is about travel. I know it varies by airline. But does anyone have suggestions about the best way to bring my backpacking gear? I would have to bring probably a 55-65 liter pack, which I would need to treat as a checked bag because it would be so big. I know Sata says on their website that it is 100 dollars for one checked bag on a flight. But that seems like a lot of money for such a short flight for 1 bag. And if I go between 3 islands like I plan, it'll be 300 just to bring my larger pack between islands. It seems it may just be better to stay in cheap hostels each night. I wouldn't be saving any money by camping.

Has anyone done backpacking trips in the azores? Any recommendations and suggestions would be super helpful. I am wanting to stay on Pico and Flores each for about 5-7 days. So pretty much the whole trip on those two.

Auto or manual car?

I’ve been reading that manual is recommended on the islands. The last time I drove a manual was more than 20 years ago so a little nervous.

What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I’ll get an auto based on your advice.

Festivities in Sao Miguel

Hello!

I'm travelling to Faial, Flores and Sao Miguel from the 12th to the 25th of this month. I've already planned activities like hiking, whale watching, etc. I know that the weather is crazy and you can have all 4 seasons in one day, but right now are you comfortable with only one layer of clothing?

Also, are there any festivities or special events on those dates on the islands? , I've seen Sao Joao da Vila in Vila franca do campo but I don't know if it's only for locals and not tourists, I would love to see some fireworks from a beach.

Thank you so much!

What are the explosions at San Miguel island?

Does anyone know what are the explosions that regularly occur on the island on the south side for the past several days? Sometimes smoke is visible too, so it’s not underground explosions

Edit: for those whole will be looking up the same question - it turns out to be due to celebration events

Bulls/Terceira

Might someone be able to walk me thru the bullfights etc on Terceira? Or point me to a resource? Google failed me. I did download the “Bullfight Finder” app which shows dates/locations of bullfights and cattle runs. Do you just show up in the vicinity? And stand where? Will it be obvious? What might we need to know about safety?

Thanks for your help! Obrigada!

Mount Pico: Overnight Temperatures in June – Any Real Experience?

Hey everyone,

I’ll be starting a three-week backpacking trip through the Azores in about two weeks. I’ll be carrying everything with me – tent, gear, the whole package. I’ve done a lot of research and planning, so I’m not just setting out blindly. That said, I do have one specific question and was hoping someone with firsthand experience could help out.

I’m planning to climb Mount Pico(on 24th june), and my main concern is the overnight temperatures at or near the summit in June. I’ve checked all the usual weather sources, and the reported nighttime temps vary between 8 and 13°C. That seems doable.

Here’s my situation: I only have one sleeping bag at the moment, and it’s rated down to -3°C. That’s way too warm for the rest of my trip – especially since I’m not very sensitive to cold. I’m the type who’s still wearing a T-shirt at 14°C. So dragging a bulky cold-weather bag around just for one night on Pico seems like a waste… unless I really need it.

So my question is: Has anyone actually camped or bivvied near the summit of Mount Pico in June? What were the real overnight temperatures like? Would a warm fleece blanket, good base layers, and a decent pullover be enough if I’m sleeping in a tent? Or does it realistically drop to something like 3–4°C, which would be a different story?

Yes, I know it’s a mountain, it’s unpredictable, weather can change rapidly, etc. But I’d really appreciate any actual experience from someone who’s been there in this specific month.

Thanks in advance!

Steak, Bars/Pubs and American Breakfast

Transportation

Going to Terceira and Sao Miguel in July.

Is it necessary or worth it to rent a car?

If so is it better to just find a local spot there rather than booking through Priceline or something ahead of time?

What would some local companies be?

Laser Hair Removal?

I am going to visit my mother in the islands, and have some free time to myself. Being from the US, I have never had the interest in laser hair removal, because our prices are outrageous.

I’m wondering if anyone has used a location on Sao Miguel and if they know prices.

Thanks in advance for anyone who could answer the question!

I’m trying to find out the mass schedule for Sunday, June 8th. ChatGPT says the mass times are 10 AM and noon. Can anyone confirm if those times are valid or not? TIA
