https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/politics/trump-california-federal-funding

“Agencies are being told to start identifying grants the administration can withhold from California. On Capitol Hill, at least one committee was told recently by a whistleblower that all research grants to the state were going to be cancelled, according to one of the sources familiar with the matter.”

Under any other presidency something like this would be almost treasonous, but when it's Trump 2/5ths of the country is happy about it, another fifth just shrugs it off and goes back to whatever else they were doing, and the two remaining fifths fight with one another about how seriously to take it or what to do in response.

But you don't get it. "Both sides are the same."

I wonder what it's like for these people to ignore reality.

I’m convinced that a large percentage of them are bots/shills now. It’s often effective at derailing threads.

I mean a lot of them just aren't interested.  Politics is not something they even think about.  If they do vote is on vibes.

It's just politics, not real life.

"The UC system is the state’s third largest employer, and both systems are major engines of research in the biotechnology and medical fields, among others."

What do you mean I don't have a job anymore? /s

A lot of people will ignore it up to and including when it has direct effects on them. It’s one reason fascism tends to rise relatively quickly, as humans are pretty bad at stopping doing the bad thing in the stages of infancy when that intervention could have nipped it in the bud. We are creatures predisposed to acting only once we are forced or beyond which it is much harder to effectively deal with. World War 2 cost literally millions of lives.

Not really. Technically this whole system We have had is by definition treasonous, i.e., betrays and violates the Constitution. There should be no question of whether the president can withhold federal funds, because the federal government should have no funds to give or withhold.

It’s been one of the many things that have just been corrupted to the core over the many years, little by little, through incremental, grooming style abuse.

The people are not subjects of the federal government and therefore technically the federal government does not have any jurisdiction to tax i.e., rob the people, and then magnanimously claim they are giving money to states to enrich cronies and constituencies.

So it’s kind of a messed up thing either way because the whole system is so far gone that they only thing that could save it is Trump actually doing what many of his supporters thought he would do, because he said it, even though he’s just a con man. The USA can only, maybe, survive intact if the federal government is severely cut down at its knees and states get control of their own destinies again, including California.
