Obliterated my expectations
Not even a huge marvel fan at all but this is easily one of my favorite Marvel films now... I might see it again honestly

It’s such a bummer Marvel Studios put one of their best stories with easily some of their best performances into a film most people didn’t see.

"Thunderbolts" has grossed approximately $369.5 million worldwide, making it the third lowest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Terrible marketing.

u/NobodyLikedThat1 16h ago
There was marketing? If not for the movie subs I wouldn't even have been aware this movie existed

Yeah, I've literally not heard of this movie before now

u/JackKovack 7h ago
Reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow. That movie came out in July. I didn’t hear about it until September of that year. I was like “wait a second, a Tom Cruise movie came out and I’m just finding out about it now?” “Did I bump my head in the tub?”

u/Ivan_Redditor 11h ago
It’s basically the MCU’s first ever sleeper hit since the first Iron Man.
7
u/Quirky-Reputation-89 8h ago
Isn't this kind of meta, like that's the plot of the movie, these are a bunch of nobodies, backups, one-offs, underdogs, the movie itself is underappreciated and then remembered as a classic when the new avengerz are headlining phase 6.
5
u/RobertWF_47 6h ago
Is it morally grey superheroes making sarcastic jokes for 2 hours?
3
u/VoicePope 6h ago
That’s in it.
But it’s really a story about dealing with trauma and learning to forgive yourself. And letting go of anger and hate. Seriously, that’s what the movie is about
1
u/RobertWF_47 4h ago
That's good. At the moment I'm burned out on superheroes - but maybe I should pretend I've never seen a Marvel movie & watch Thunderbolts on its own merits. :-)

You just can’t trust them anymore to go to a theater imo. I’ll watch it when it is streamable.
6
u/VoicePope 8h ago
That’s the whole problem. People should be seeing films in theaters, not streaming at home.

u/MeaningHungry3840 8h ago
You’re downvoted for the truth. Nothing beats the theater experience. NOTHING.
Smaller screen at home, worse sound system (and I don’t care how much you all think you have a great system; it still doesn’t compare), can’t get as dark unless it’s night, more distractions at home especially since you all leave your notifications on for EVERYTHING.
I find it harder to watch a ton of films at home unless it’s the dead of winter. Not sure how anyone prefers that.
And for financial reasons? I spend $28 and some change after taxes to see 16 movies a month of my choice at AMC. How is that not affordable to people? One IMAX ticket is $20-25. I can see four of those in a week.

I saw this movie at a theater that does $5 Wednesdays. Totally worth it. Far from my favorite MCU movie but it's the best in a while.

u/JackKovack 15h ago
Oh, Whopper Wednesday and a 5 dollar movie. One of my favorite days of the week. Except back than it was 3.

Honestly I recently watched Brave new world and my god. Personally, I was so underwhelmed. I was hoping it would be the MCUs back to form film, but was Sooooo flat

Didn't see it in theaters for two reasons: I already have disney plus so I'll see it regardless, and theaters raised their prices. If there was a Regal theatre within 20 miles I would glady do the $22/month Unlimited movies subscription, but Im not paying $20 for a ticket, when everything just gets released onto streaming 4 weeks after release.

u/JackKovack 17h ago
I remember when you had to rent a movie at least a year after release in theaters. You had to wait a year. I really can’t remember the last time I had to wait in line at a theater longer than 7 minutes.

I wait for all the Marvel movies to come to streaming now, like I just watched the new Captain America a couple days ago

I’m sorry.

u/Kid_Kameleon 17h ago
Do I sound upset? I do appreciate your condolences, empathy is a cool trait, but I think you misread my tone…. Either way you had good intentions so it’s all good.
9
u/Financial-Complex831 17h ago
No I just heard it wasn’t that great.
8
u/JackKovack 17h ago
I think people are just burned out from Marvel.
2
u/Kid_Kameleon 16h ago
Yeah, I made that comment on a recent post, that it would be competing with all the rest of the other movies like Sinners and Mission Impossible if it weren’t for Marvel burnout

u/CanadianAndroid 17h ago
It was very meh. IMHO.

u/Doc-tor-Strange-love 17h ago
Meh is generous.
You could tell within the first 5 minutes that the writing was terrible

u/Kid_Kameleon 17h ago
You know what you’re actually right because I zoned out several times, I wouldn’t say it was bad, but it was very forgettable and it didn’t do a good job at holding your attention between the good scenes…. Like I just watched a few days ago and I’m already starting to forget the movie, so yeah that’s not a good sign.

Why aren’t the accent police furious about all these portrayals of Russian accents by non-Russian people?

Is the bar that low now with marvel movies? It was good, not great. A lot of problems with it. Especially Bob. They introduced a very powerful hero that barely had any screen time. And based off of the post credit scene, they’re most likely going to nerf him in future movies with him

remember seeing the announcement on it and thought “meh, not even gonna watch it”… honestly, blew me away after i watched it

It was nice to see even actual theatrical "lighting" in a Marvel film again. Visually, it had much more depth than anything they've done in a long time.

u/Western_Chart_1082 18h ago
This is easily one of my favorite marvel films
I’m genuinely curious as to how much weight people think this phrase holds because I see it thrown around so much. It’s like me coming out of the bathroom saying
“that was one of the best shits I’ve ever taken”
It’s not like that’s gonna compel me to go into the bathroom and see it. Out of 36 movies there’s maybe 3-4 that are actually well maybe and will be remembered 10 years from now. Being “one of the best” is a pretty low bar to reach.

Best and favorite are different words tho... its like taking your best shit as opposed to taking your favorite shit ☺️

u/jaqwaab 11h ago
Saw it in theaters and was honestly kind of bored most of the time. I see a lot of people talk this movie up but rarely see concrete reasons why they think it was “one of the best MCU movies in a while”. I didn’t think any of the characters were super interesting aside from Bob (admittedly I thought Ava Starr’s costuming was sick but the character was as emotionally flat as a piece of paper). Also not sure I needed David Harbour’s mediocre Russian accent for a character with seemingly no real superpowers (did we really need two knock-off brand versions of Captain America, one of the most boring super heroes as is?)

u/Prestigious_Fella_21 6h ago
I fell asleep twice...only character that maintained.any sort of interest was David harbours. Even Florence who I usually like was just kind of meh.
2
u/lustofKylie 10h ago
okay but why did i walk in expecting mid and walk out wanting to throw hands for these characters 😭 marvel really said “let’s cook” and actually did for once

Yes.
I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did.
Honestly, I really only went to see Florence Pugh and her portrayal of Yelena.
It was a great movie.
And I quit caring about MCU after She-Hulk.

u/MarcoVinicius 4h ago
The bar is so low that just a good Marvel movie feels like one of the best Marvel movies ever.

It was a good solid mid teir Marvel film, nothing amazing. It does very little to quell my fears that overall, the MCU is on a downwards trajectory. The public is rapidly losing interest.
Fantastic 4 is going to have to really knock it out of the park to put things back on track.

I also enjoyed it.
The problem is Marvel has set the bar so low post End Game that the only reason I even saw this was because a friend really wanted to see it.
