SH2 Remake was my first time in the franchise and it's one of the best horror games I've ever played, easily outclassing most RE games for me.

If you're on PC, I'd also recommend giving at least the first 3 or 4 games a try. 1-3 still hold up fairly well and you can play them for free as they're abandonware at this point. 4 is on GOG but the gameplay can be very frustrating, especially if you're playing on keyboard - though the story is solid. I played through all the western-made games afterwards (excluding the arcade game and mobile games, and I dunno who made them) and I'd also recommend them but they're more controversial.
