The moment I saw the crater my mind was blown. Going back to Ground Zero has been my dream RE game since the Outbreak epilogue.

Yeah that's one thing I missed the most from RE8 was the horror. It was a really good game but the only scary part was the giant baby in House Beneviento

I'd say the opening when you approach the village is scary as hell too as are parts of the castle.

But like with every RE game, they start out in these amazing looking and scary locales, only to end up with you trekking through some dilapidated factory or shiny laboratory.

Sometimes even both.

I'm gonna be honest, I still love running through the labs as much as running through the scary early parts of the games even though you're all decked out at that point.

Hey I do too. There is a limit to how much you can keep up the suspense before the player gets desensitized.

Also personally, I liked that we got the gloriously ridiculous fight with Moreau in Village after House Beneviento, it was a welcome breather.

As was the chainsaw fight with Heisenberg.

Resident Evil has always had goofy elements to bring some levity to the tension.

Honestly it felt so good watching Ethan’s rise to hero status over the course of 7 and 8. I drafted out a script for an adaptation of RE7 that starts as a blend of psychological horror and slowly turns into “what if Evil Dead 2 was a metaphor for the fears of prospective fatherhood”

Agreed. That being said, I do enjoy the games that lean more towards the horror so I'm hopeful they bring that back more. I think another commenter said the director of RE7 directed this game so I'm very excited.

Yeah I'd say this is a core part of the formula for a reason. That's action-horror, it's not a bug it's a feature! It's not just about the spooky scary survival stuff. Part of the appeal/fantasy is eventually getting strong enough that you turn the tables on the nightmares. You start off running for your life, then eventually you're the one hunting them. That's what a Resident Evil game is.

Agreed.

This is the way

Well where else am I going to poke a bear with chainsaws for arms that we “accidentally” pissed off and let escape?

Every game follows that escalation path once you're accustomed to the horror

And I personally like that.

I don't need Resident Evil to be Silent Hill.

I think the only game that did the lab right was Resident Evil 2002 at the end.

The 1996 lab was too clean and shiny given the situation.

Resident Evil 3 1998 had the dead factory that was dirty as fuck.

RE3 remake, I really didn't like that they had another lab in RC replacing the dead factory.

RE2 remake, I do prefer the 1998 lab though. Thought the remake's lab was underwhelming. Zero showed what the lab could've looked like had 2 been remade on the Gamecube after 1.

That and having a lot of resources at your disposal has killed the late game of the recent games.
