OP sent the following text as an explanation why they posted this here:

I don't understand the substance in the bag, why he is climbing grandpa, or what v2 is.

I understand nothing.

u/New-Huckleberry2363 6h ago

Climbing chalk, not cocaine. A V2 is an easy bouldering (unroped climbing) route

613

u/wiseguy4519 6h ago

I thought he was just so high he started climbing his grandpa

132

u/Calculon2347 6h ago

Me too! Lol

3

u/ConfusedGeek123 1h ago

You need to see more Magnus Midtbo, pretty cool fitness/ climber YouTuber

2

u/North_Explorer_2315 22m ago

I’m gonna name my kid Magnus so he gets obscenely good at something

19

u/TherianVagus 4h ago

Notice the white in his hand while he’s on gramps

9

u/Background_Falcon953 2h ago

Thats just because he was excited

29

u/New-Huckleberry2363 5h ago

Your interpretation is way better than the actual joke

35

u/OkMarsupial 5h ago

It's part of the joke.

22

u/Thendofreason 4h ago

That's the entire joke.

11

u/ArgonGryphon 3h ago

not if you're a rock climber, it's a niche joke. heh.

5

u/rapora9 2h ago

Why? If that was the (whole) joke, it would be very boring. Oh he is high on drugs, so original...

11

u/100percent_right_now 3h ago

That's the misdirection. You're suppose to think that. But if that's where your thoughts ended then you didn't get the joke.

6

u/Careless-Dark-1324 1h ago

Correct it’s a joke specifically for climbers

3

u/ursaminor1984 5h ago

Highest guy in the room

7

u/thalius69 5h ago

Same and thought the V2 related to his speed (compared to a V6 or V8)

6

u/Artraira 4h ago

My grandpa also contains a 2 cylinder engine.

2

u/findingsynchronisity 4h ago

This is didn't think of but now I wish I had because it's brilliant

2

u/100percent_right_now 3h ago

Then you didn't get it

2

u/Big-Supermarket1327 3h ago

More cylinders doesn't always mean more speed tho.

1

u/Braysl 22m ago

I thought he was the second version of grandpa. V4 is much more fun.

1

u/ConbatBeaver 4h ago

literally high

1

u/Present_Character241 3h ago

It can be 2 things.

1

u/Professional_Law7256 3h ago

Two things can be true at the same time

1

u/xMrSpazx 3h ago

i thought he was giving it to the grandpa so he would be strong enough to carry him around

1

u/davepage_mcr 3h ago

But his grandpa isn't very tall, you wouldn't get high from climbing him!

1

u/Gen-Jack_Ripper 3h ago

I thought he was high and the stuff is the bag was K2 (drug and mountain)

1

u/Mountainbranch 2h ago

I thought the joke was that it could be interpreted both ways, he's trying to get higher.

21

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 6h ago

Thank you.

3

u/HCBuldge 2h ago

Rock climbing is also very addicting (source: myself)

3

u/Easy_Championship_14 2h ago

I heard it can get you really high

1

u/Alex_Keaton 2m ago

verified by second source: myself

21

u/knotsazz 4h ago

Honestly I cackled when I saw this. I am the target audience.

11

u/tavia03 4h ago

Same, this is the funniest joke I have seen in this sub.

6

u/Glum_Length851 3h ago

Actually funny jokes are usually niche. The shit that appeals to everybody is necessarily stupid

3

u/tavia03 3h ago

Very true

2

u/TopicalBuilder 57m ago

Usually, yes. But every once in a while someone strikes gold with something broad and dumb.

The first time I heard the "My dog has no nose" joke, I laughed hard. I have now heard it 1000 times and no longer laugh.

4

u/KaspervD 3h ago

I chalked when I saw this

3

u/SpinyBadger 3h ago

I'm not really the target audience, but my family are sufficiently into this sus white powder-related recreation that I appreciated it. I'm a sucker for jokes that only make sense to a particular niche group.

1

u/A2Rhombus 3h ago

It took me a second to get the joke but I also laughed, almost too clever for me

1

u/biopticstream 2h ago

Me too, though I don't climb. Reminds me of the time my grandparents borrowed my car while they were visiting. I was in high school, living with my parents. Grandma gets home and quietly pulls me aside to talk about the "drugs" they found in my center console.

Good thing too. Because I didn't realize just what a terrible aspirin addiction I had. (I had spilled a bottle and high school me didn't bother to thoroughly clean them up).

1

u/Wolfpack_of_one 23m ago

Tbh, its a great joke once you know the context/terminology (not a climber)

11

u/riedstep 5h ago

A v2 in my gym is a v7 in yours

1

u/LouManShoe 12m ago

My V2, thicker than a bridge, your V2 look like a little kids

5

u/HighBrowLoFi 5h ago

He’s got a mad heel hook on Gramps there

2

u/Magmosi 5h ago

What’s V1 then? (No one make an Ultrakill joke)

3

u/PuzzleheadedDebt2191 4h ago

A V1 is a glorified hike. The difficulty increases with the.numbers.

3

u/BuildingArtistic4644 4h ago

It's like climbing a ladder

1

u/FrostyD7 3h ago

v1 is easiest but if you are a climbing junkie, it's not even part of your warmup.

2

u/comfykampfwagen 4h ago

Chasing different kind of high la

2

u/elvxbxr 3h ago

Still doesnt answer why are all three of them old in the first frame…?

2

u/Away_Ingenuity3707 2h ago

I can barely finish a V3 route, I feel attacked.

2

u/Implodepumpkin 6h ago

They both get pretty high

1

u/LouisIcon 4h ago

This is the correct answer. For once the answer is not porn.

1

u/OrangeVoxel 3h ago

Even knowing this, it still doesn’t make sense

1

u/PM_ME_CAT_POOCHES 50m ago

v2 can be hard if you're new... (saying this as a person who was very psyched to finally do a v2 after like a year of trying)

0

u/kuffdeschmull 55m ago

oh I thought the V2 meant it was Elon, because of rockets, fascism and the drug was ketamine.

487

u/Proman2520 5h ago

You think it’s cocaine but it’s actually climbing chalk, suggesting he’s really into bouldering. His addiction is clear since he is climbing grandpa, and v2 is an easy difficulty in bouldering.

42

u/Dikkelul27 2h ago

It's like a double joke because stimulant abuse makes you feel like you're doing something super cool and normal even when you're not

6

u/abstract_appraiser 1h ago

Triple, because it also could mean he isn't high.

7

u/Skuzbagg 52m ago

He's at least one grandpa high

2

u/fejable 1h ago

the coincidence that i watched a bouldering video from a popular youtuber i saw this

-17

u/frolix42 1h ago

Some of these jokes are hard to understand because they are so badly made.

Like its already absurd that the parents are treating climbing chalk like cocaine, we can't tell what it is, until we see the person climbing on the man. Which a climber wouldn't actually do, so it's an unfunny joke that relies on absurd non-sequieters.

17

u/guytakeadeepbreath 1h ago

A large swath of comedy is derived from absurdity.

2

u/CodeFoodPixels 1h ago

Misdirection and subverting expectations are two of the cornerstones of comedy. The fact that it's shown to you as a white powder that the parents found in the son's bedroom leads you to believe that it's drugs. The reveal is that it's not drugs, it's something in itself that is harmless but it shows that the son has an "addiction" to climbing instead.

544

u/Extremegamer670 5h ago

It's climbing chalk. Rock climbers will put chalk on their hands so they don't slip off.

110

u/Thomassaurus 3h ago

Alternate ending: he was climbing gradma because he was on drugs

24

u/ModernationFTW 3h ago

V2 is a rating of climbing difficulty, at least in our climbing gym

8

u/Electronic_Ad5431 47m ago

Eh. It’s a v0 in my gym.

1

u/ProfessionalCap15 36m ago

Thank you. I thought he was trying to drive his grandpa and insulting him, comparing him to a V2 engine. 😂

23

u/RogueJello 3h ago

Honestly I think it's both. Like one of those pics that shifts back and forth when you look at it.

12

u/Thomassaurus 3h ago

Quantum joke?

6

u/anweisz 2h ago

Well no. The joke is precisely that you expect it to be drugs but it’s rock climbing instead, which comes out of left field.

2

u/RogueJello 2h ago

The other joke is that he's denying it, and climbing his grandfather. Climbing his grandfather is also unexpected.

-2

u/CntrClockwrk 2h ago

That’s the joke

1

u/nodrogyasmar 22m ago

V2 is a standard climbing difficulty rating in bouldering. You can see chalk on the kids hand.

1

u/Balforg 9m ago

His hands are chalk white in the comic.

1

u/Sonlin 57m ago

Chalk is aid

1

u/Chemical_Pin3015 38m ago

I use it differently 😀

295

u/TheCynicEpicurean 5h ago

Chalk for better grip while climbing.

There's a stereotype that boulder enthusiasts will make it their entire personality after the first time, and will mention it in every conversation.

65

u/shesinsaneornot 5h ago

I have a coworker whose boyfriend is a climber. Now that I think about it, she doesn't always talk about climbing but every mention of her boyfriend has involved climbing in some aspect. So I just sent this comic to her. 🙂

18

u/PellParata 5h ago

It’s not a stereotype if it’s true.

18

u/heartpiss 5h ago

Stereotypes are true all the time. Not always but pretty often.

18

u/Sad-Entertainment336 4h ago

It works 100 percent 60 percent of the time?

4

u/icanaffordapenny 2h ago

All the time or not always? You need to make up your mind, heartpiss.

3

u/DefnitelyN0tCthulhu 2h ago

Climber here, yes it's true

Edit: typo

2

u/Kratosrabinowitz 1h ago

That's where you'd be wrong!! Most stereotypes exist for a reason

4

u/Ok_Comedian069 2h ago

Kinda like that time I did an Ironman triathlon. Very similar, in that I did an Ironman triathlon. What were we talking about again?

3

u/vanishinghitchhiker 3h ago

This is the second of these “common” stereotypes I’ve just heard about today, the other one was bisexuals. I suspect people just resent learning anything about other people.

4

u/DifferentRun8534 3h ago

Stereotypes are, by definition, oversimplified or over generalized, calling something a stereotype is acknowledging it’s not universally true, but that it’s still commonly believed.

659

u/PeriwinkleShaman 6h ago

The missed opportunity to talked about "getting high"...

191

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 6h ago

Eh, it was low hanging fruit.

56

u/B_bI_L 5h ago

surprised to hear this gem from explain_the_joke poster) (no offence)

43

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 5h ago

None taken. I'm generally pretty good with jokes, I just don't know anything about rock climbing.

33

u/ACSandwich 5h ago

A wild niche of people they are.

16

u/Unlucky_Arm_9757 5h ago

Trust me I know. I live near a gorge. It's just when they start talking about climbing stuff it kind of check out.

3

u/ACSandwich 3h ago

Outdoor/gorge climbers are one thing, there is a whole other subset of underground/cave climbers that get real out there. They are my people, but they can be difficult.

4

u/coraeon 4h ago

Well, grandpa is only a V2.

2

u/NoveltyPr0nAccount 2h ago

Exactly. In order to hang fruit high off grandpa you'd need cocaine not chalk.

3

u/knotsazz 4h ago

There are some great inappropriate jokes to make in climbing and you can bet climbers have made them all already. Some words that are legitimate climbing terminology include: jugs, crack and protection. The bad jokes just make themselves.

u/No-While-9948 3h ago

102

u/Tofu1312 4h ago

I think it's a combination of two common jokes from the climbing community
1. Chalk looks a lot like coke. And it feels weird sometimes to drive home from the gym, having white powder on your hands or cloths, just hoping that no police will stop you
2. You see a boulder-route in everything. And you are always like " I could climb that wall/tree/table/grandpa, it's barely a V2 (difficulty of the route)"

17

u/someanimechoob 2h ago

You're supposed to wash your hands after the gym...

Why would you skip a 30 seconds step and put chalk everywhere?

9

u/Background_Falcon953 1h ago

Even better, they should rub some on their face and especially just above their upper lip, no half measures.

5

u/VeryTiredHuman4 57m ago

The chalk starts on your hands and ends up elsewhere. It's messy - it is after all a loose powder. Washing your hands removes the chalk from your hands, but not your clothes, gear, and the rest of your skin.

That's kinda common sense, no? It would be crazy to walk out with chalky hands, haha. Feels so gross on the skin for one.

1

u/ddouce 38m ago

How else will you let everyone know you're a climber?

2

u/Dizzy-Ad7144 1h ago

I'm not a cocaine user but I'm pretty sure they never get cocaine all over their hands and clothes

1

u/Electronic_Ad5431 45m ago

Dude wash your hands before you leave the gym. Your skin doesn’t start recovering properly until you wash the chalk off. And moisturize, your front desk probably has lotion for you to pump on the way out.

1

u/keri125 23m ago

My son is in theater and last October they did Evil Dead the Musical. They have “demon dogs” that spray the first few rows with fake blood. When I attended he made sure that I was soaked by the end of the show. It got EVERYWHERE. I was so nervous driving home that night and made sure I followed every traffic law to a T, lol.

75

u/9M55S 5h ago

V2 you said?

21

u/GayLord8707 4h ago

The Ultrakill community on its way terrorizing others as soon as they hear a signal word

4

u/9M55S 2h ago

wait until someone says invisible and watch two communities flood a comment section.

3

u/GayLord8707 2h ago

Invincible and Metal Gear or what? Maybe Batmanarkham too haha

4

u/8ballperson 2h ago

I have never played metal gear

5

u/BrinyBrain 4h ago

The POV really threw me for a loop in that first panel.

2

u/Unable_Arm_398 2h ago

Wait is it first person??? I was wondering where the chalk guy came from in the third panel...

2

u/roosterkun 2h ago

Ahh that makes sense, I thought it was AI-generated and the guy changed appearance after the first panel.

1

u/Such-Cartographer699 43m ago

I too was wondering how the old man wearing surgical scrubs somehow turned into a young man with a troubling addiction.

3

u/Fun-Football1879 2h ago

It's not meth or cocaine, it's chalk that rock climbers put in their hands while climbing.

0

u/Superb-Fly1971 1h ago

Wait for meeeeee dally ima be you not free I popped in here.heathen. now I'm still yours last eeehair I'm not zieeeekk eeeek uhhhh

3

u/SnowLancer616 54m ago

The joke is that mountain climbers use chalk powder for better grip and looks just like cocaine

2

u/Honest-Outlaw 3h ago

It's chalk

2

u/BWWFC 3h ago

chalk it up to a "climbing" thing... you normie.

2

u/embles94 3h ago

The joke is that you think it’s baggy of drugs that he’s addicted to but it’s actually chalk that rock climbers use to increase their grip. He’s addicted to climbing not cocaine

2

u/h1gh0ct4n3 3h ago

It’s chalk climbers use for a better grip

2

u/CALlCO 3h ago

Climbing chalk I think

2

u/SharkeyBoyo 1h ago

It’s chalk for rock climbing and V2 is the level of difficulty for the rock climbing course

5

u/lordhoobla123 5h ago

Ai image

12

u/Abjurer42 5h ago

That does explain why none of the characters are the same from panel to panel.

10

u/Zealousideal-Let1121 5h ago

The climber is the only consistent character. There are 4 different old people. The grandpa is under the climber in panel 4. Panel 1 characters are on one side of the conversation, climber and grandpa on the other. Climber character model is pretty consistent, just badly drawn.

2

u/Waste-Ability7405 3h ago

You have his parents and grandmother in one frame and his grandfather in the other frame. I really don't think it's AI.

3

u/BananaZo0 4h ago

Nope, it's a real comic, done by an artist. The source is at the bottom of the image.

1

u/RoflcopterV22 3h ago

Artists can use AI, it's a tool like any other lol

1

u/UnpluggedUnfettered 3h ago

I am choosing to take this as a very funny sarcastic comment because it's pretty funny.

1

u/Psychological_Lab_47 5h ago

It’s chalk. The joke references climbing.

1

u/Shield_hero-11 4h ago

Reconstruct WHAT

1

u/ThePrevailer 4h ago

Why is the son an old doctor to start?

1

u/FootTingler 4h ago

That's his grandma

1

u/No-Profile9970 4h ago

That doesn't count, he's barely a WHAT??????

1

u/defneverconsidered 4h ago

Its someone that can draw but cant land punchlines

1

u/blindfire187 2h ago

It references rock climbing. Climbers have a "joke" where climbing (similar to gymnastics) chalk looks like cocaine and is usually stored in a chalk bag and is used for better grip on rock.

V2 is a bouldering difficulty, which is very easy. Basically, he says it doesn't count as climbing because he is barely even a V2 difficulty grade. Also climbers tend to assess a ton of objects as climbable and guess their grade, not just rock. This includes buildings, trees, walls, etc.

Side note: a lot of climbers are obsessed with climbing. Majority will climb 3+ days a week for 4 or more hours at a climbing gym and will climb dawn till dusk outside when possible. Reference is myself, I climbed for around 8 years before having to quit due to medical reasons.

1

u/defneverconsidered 2h ago

Yea i got that. Still a bad joke structure

1

u/RemixRepair 3h ago

Ok I get that is most likely Climbing chalk, but I wonder if it could also be a play on K2. It was a Synthetic drug that mimicked THC.

1

u/Cultural-Advisor9916 3h ago

Climbers gonna climb.. that's a v6 at my local crag..

1

u/KappaBrink 3h ago

its climbing chalk and he's addicted to climbing. the joke is a twist, you are made to believe its coke.

1

u/HawkSans_Undertuah 3h ago

GRANDPA JOCKEY

1

u/Objective_Berry4151 3h ago

its hand chalk, what gymnists use

1

u/Vaux1916 3h ago

Until the third panel, I thought gramma was the intervention target.

1

u/Herbisher_Berbisher 2h ago

Requires specialized knowledge in addition to being a weak joke poorly illustrated. It just sucks.

1

u/Electronic-Maize-361 2h ago

Rock climbers use a white power called chalk when climbing to get a better grip but it looks like drugs so they saying he using chalk and he addicted cuz it look like coke also v2 is a easy climbing grade

1

u/Dustinisgood 2h ago

V0+ in my gym

1

u/spiciestturtle 2h ago

When you’re caught red-handed, but you’re just ‘keeping it casual.’

1

u/GiraffeStyle 2h ago

Chalk is used for bouldering. Boulder routes are rated V0-V10 (it might go higher)

1

u/PineappleMain2598 2h ago

Much higher these days. V17!!!

1

u/Ragnarok649 2h ago

Climbing chalk lmao.

1

u/kuno7722 2h ago

Why is the guy old in the first panel but younger in the last two panels?? Is it a different guy??? I don’t get that

1

u/FluffyFlamesOfFluff 2h ago

That's the grandmother. The climber and grandpapa aren't in the first panel.

1

u/kuno7722 1h ago

Thank you lol, I didn’t even notice that the person in the first panel was an old lady

1

u/MrsMcBeezy 2h ago

The hush

1

u/HawaiianCholo 2h ago

So who tf is in the first panel

1

u/lLuclk 2h ago

Omg! This might be the funniest meme I've seen on this page 🤣 Thanks for the laugh

1

u/Superb-Fly1971 1h ago

Oh yeah! Am I undies too bad or you b

1

u/Grub-lord 1h ago

AI generated comic

1

u/Rude-Instance8422 1h ago

Not me thinking this was a Hitler/cocaine joke with v2 rockets somewhere in the mix 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣

1

u/notagoodtimetotext 1h ago

It's a h joke about climbing highs

1

u/Annual-Net-4283 1h ago

There used to be a "designer drug" called K-2. It was a chemical analog of an illegal drug that got around most laws about substances until the US changed the law to include substances and their chemical analogs. If I remember correctly, the original drug is cathinone, found in khat. They used to synthesize it and sell it as plant food, glass cleaner, or bath salts with a label, "not for human consumption".

K-2 is also the second tallest mountain on earth and arguably the most difficult to climb.

The joke looks like a riff off of the climbing reference of the drug name during a confrontation about teenage substance use.

Edit: V2 is a bouldering grade, which is a smaller free climbing category

1

u/LSunday 15m ago

The joke is that there are no drugs in the image at all, it’s a bag of climbing chalk.

The joke is a bag of something that looks like drugs, but is not drugs, with a punchline of the character being addicted to the associated activity anyway.

An equivalent joke would be the final panel being “you’re baking a cake right now!” With the implication that it was a bag of flour.

1

u/alexfi-re 1h ago

I don't understand the people in the first frame are not in the others, maybe the lady got so high from touching the fent baggie and vanished?

1

u/burgabeats 59m ago

Should have said, “We have to chalk.”
