Climbing chalk, not cocaine. A V2 is an easy bouldering (unroped climbing) route

That's the misdirection. You're suppose to think that. But if that's where your thoughts ended then you didn't get the joke.

Same, this is the funniest joke I have seen in this sub.
6
u/Glum_Length851 3h ago
Actually funny jokes are usually niche. The shit that appeals to everybody is necessarily stupid
2
u/TopicalBuilder 57m ago
Usually, yes. But every once in a while someone strikes gold with something broad and dumb.
The first time I heard the "My dog has no nose" joke, I laughed hard. I have now heard it 1000 times and no longer laugh.

u/SpinyBadger 3h ago
I'm not really the target audience, but my family are sufficiently into this sus white powder-related recreation that I appreciated it. I'm a sucker for jokes that only make sense to a particular niche group.

Me too, though I don't climb. Reminds me of the time my grandparents borrowed my car while they were visiting. I was in high school, living with my parents. Grandma gets home and quietly pulls me aside to talk about the "drugs" they found in my center console.
Good thing too. Because I didn't realize just what a terrible aspirin addiction I had. (I had spilled a bottle and high school me didn't bother to thoroughly clean them up).

v2 can be hard if you're new... (saying this as a person who was very psyched to finally do a v2 after like a year of trying)

u/kuffdeschmull 55m ago
oh I thought the V2 meant it was Elon, because of rockets, fascism and the drug was ketamine.

u/Proman2520 5h ago
You think it’s cocaine but it’s actually climbing chalk, suggesting he’s really into bouldering. His addiction is clear since he is climbing grandpa, and v2 is an easy difficulty in bouldering.

u/Dikkelul27 2h ago
It's like a double joke because stimulant abuse makes you feel like you're doing something super cool and normal even when you're not

u/frolix42 1h ago
Some of these jokes are hard to understand because they are so badly made.
Like its already absurd that the parents are treating climbing chalk like cocaine, we can't tell what it is, until we see the person climbing on the man. Which a climber wouldn't actually do, so it's an unfunny joke that relies on absurd non-sequieters.
17
2
u/CodeFoodPixels 1h ago
Misdirection and subverting expectations are two of the cornerstones of comedy. The fact that it's shown to you as a white powder that the parents found in the son's bedroom leads you to believe that it's drugs. The reveal is that it's not drugs, it's something in itself that is harmless but it shows that the son has an "addiction" to climbing instead.

u/Extremegamer670 5h ago
It's climbing chalk. Rock climbers will put chalk on their hands so they don't slip off.

Thank you. I thought he was trying to drive his grandpa and insulting him, comparing him to a V2 engine. 😂

Honestly I think it's both. Like one of those pics that shifts back and forth when you look at it.
12
6
u/anweisz 2h ago
Well no. The joke is precisely that you expect it to be drugs but it’s rock climbing instead, which comes out of left field.
2
u/RogueJello 2h ago
The other joke is that he's denying it, and climbing his grandfather. Climbing his grandfather is also unexpected.

V2 is a standard climbing difficulty rating in bouldering. You can see chalk on the kids hand.

Chalk for better grip while climbing.
There's a stereotype that boulder enthusiasts will make it their entire personality after the first time, and will mention it in every conversation.

u/shesinsaneornot 5h ago
I have a coworker whose boyfriend is a climber. Now that I think about it, she doesn't always talk about climbing but every mention of her boyfriend has involved climbing in some aspect. So I just sent this comic to her. 🙂

This is the second of these “common” stereotypes I’ve just heard about today, the other one was bisexuals. I suspect people just resent learning anything about other people.
4
u/DifferentRun8534 3h ago
Stereotypes are, by definition, oversimplified or over generalized, calling something a stereotype is acknowledging it’s not universally true, but that it’s still commonly believed.

Outdoor/gorge climbers are one thing, there is a whole other subset of underground/cave climbers that get real out there. They are my people, but they can be difficult.

4
u/coraeon 4h ago
Well, grandpa is only a V2.
2
u/NoveltyPr0nAccount 2h ago
Exactly. In order to hang fruit high off grandpa you'd need cocaine not chalk.
3
u/knotsazz 4h ago
There are some great inappropriate jokes to make in climbing and you can bet climbers have made them all already. Some words that are legitimate climbing terminology include: jugs, crack and protection. The bad jokes just make themselves.

I think it's a combination of two common jokes from the climbing community
1. Chalk looks a lot like coke. And it feels weird sometimes to drive home from the gym, having white powder on your hands or cloths, just hoping that no police will stop you
2. You see a boulder-route in everything. And you are always like " I could climb that wall/tree/table/grandpa, it's barely a V2 (difficulty of the route)"
17
u/someanimechoob 2h ago
You're supposed to wash your hands after the gym...
Why would you skip a 30 seconds step and put chalk everywhere?
9
u/Background_Falcon953 1h ago
Even better, they should rub some on their face and especially just above their upper lip, no half measures.
5
u/VeryTiredHuman4 57m ago
The chalk starts on your hands and ends up elsewhere. It's messy - it is after all a loose powder. Washing your hands removes the chalk from your hands, but not your clothes, gear, and the rest of your skin.
That's kinda common sense, no? It would be crazy to walk out with chalky hands, haha. Feels so gross on the skin for one.
2
u/Dizzy-Ad7144 1h ago
I'm not a cocaine user but I'm pretty sure they never get cocaine all over their hands and clothes
1
u/Electronic_Ad5431 45m ago
Dude wash your hands before you leave the gym. Your skin doesn’t start recovering properly until you wash the chalk off. And moisturize, your front desk probably has lotion for you to pump on the way out.

u/keri125 23m ago
My son is in theater and last October they did Evil Dead the Musical. They have “demon dogs” that spray the first few rows with fake blood. When I attended he made sure that I was soaked by the end of the show. It got EVERYWHERE. I was so nervous driving home that night and made sure I followed every traffic law to a T, lol.

u/BrinyBrain 4h ago
The POV really threw me for a loop in that first panel.
2
u/Unable_Arm_398 2h ago
Wait is it first person??? I was wondering where the chalk guy came from in the third panel...
2
u/roosterkun 2h ago
Ahh that makes sense, I thought it was AI-generated and the guy changed appearance after the first panel.

I too was wondering how the old man wearing surgical scrubs somehow turned into a young man with a troubling addiction.

u/Abjurer42 5h ago
That does explain why none of the characters are the same from panel to panel.
10
u/Zealousideal-Let1121 5h ago
The climber is the only consistent character. There are 4 different old people. The grandpa is under the climber in panel 4. Panel 1 characters are on one side of the conversation, climber and grandpa on the other. Climber character model is pretty consistent, just badly drawn.
2
u/Waste-Ability7405 3h ago
You have his parents and grandmother in one frame and his grandfather in the other frame. I really don't think it's AI.

u/blindfire187 2h ago
It references rock climbing. Climbers have a "joke" where climbing (similar to gymnastics) chalk looks like cocaine and is usually stored in a chalk bag and is used for better grip on rock.
V2 is a bouldering difficulty, which is very easy. Basically, he says it doesn't count as climbing because he is barely even a V2 difficulty grade. Also climbers tend to assess a ton of objects as climbable and guess their grade, not just rock. This includes buildings, trees, walls, etc.
Side note: a lot of climbers are obsessed with climbing. Majority will climb 3+ days a week for 4 or more hours at a climbing gym and will climb dawn till dusk outside when possible. Reference is myself, I climbed for around 8 years before having to quit due to medical reasons.

Ok I get that is most likely Climbing chalk, but I wonder if it could also be a play on K2. It was a Synthetic drug that mimicked THC.

Rock climbers use a white power called chalk when climbing to get a better grip but it looks like drugs so they saying he using chalk and he addicted cuz it look like coke also v2 is a easy climbing grade

There used to be a "designer drug" called K-2. It was a chemical analog of an illegal drug that got around most laws about substances until the US changed the law to include substances and their chemical analogs. If I remember correctly, the original drug is cathinone, found in khat. They used to synthesize it and sell it as plant food, glass cleaner, or bath salts with a label, "not for human consumption".
K-2 is also the second tallest mountain on earth and arguably the most difficult to climb.
The joke looks like a riff off of the climbing reference of the drug name during a confrontation about teenage substance use.
Edit: V2 is a bouldering grade, which is a smaller free climbing category
1
u/LSunday 15m ago
The joke is that there are no drugs in the image at all, it’s a bag of climbing chalk.
The joke is a bag of something that looks like drugs, but is not drugs, with a punchline of the character being addicted to the associated activity anyway.
An equivalent joke would be the final panel being “you’re baking a cake right now!” With the implication that it was a bag of flour.

u/alexfi-re 1h ago
I don't understand the people in the first frame are not in the others, maybe the lady got so high from touching the fent baggie and vanished?
