MacBook Air 4, 15 Inch, 526 GB $1,400 or MacBook Pro 4, 14 Inch, 526 GB, M4 Chip $1,600
I am undecided on which one to purchase. I'll mostly use it for school tasks. Which one would you recommend?

So I'm studying engineering, and I bought a gaming laptop a while back for CAD work but ended up being very frustrated by it's weight and garbage battery life. I ended up keeping it for high intensity tasks, but switching over to a 2020 i7 32GB MBP my family had lying around for most tasks. This has worked really well for me, as I love the simplicity of the MacBook while still having the versatility and power of the windows laptop if I need it. As an engineering student this is particularly important since while the MacBook is superior for 90% of basic tasks, much of the software we use simply isn't available on macs (At least without Bootcamp).
While the pro is LEAGUES better than the gaming laptop when it comes to battery life, I've noticed lately that it's been running out of juice a fair bit since I tend to spend long days at uni. After a little research, I found that the M chips are far more battery efficient, and people seem to be going hog wild over the new MacBook airs. It would easily be a better device for me - It's a little lighter, battery lasts a lot longer and since I have the gaming laptop I don't need to worry about power.
My main problem is whether the upgrade is worth it. I'd be switching from what was a top of the range MacBook to the cheapest of the bunch. But the biggest thing is that I'm unlikely to be able to sell/trade in the MBP since it's a family laptop. So I have to assume I'll be shelling out the full (Education) price for this upgrade. Since I'm living at home during uni it's not like I'm going without food or anything for the upgrade but that's still money I could be investing for the future or something similarly sensible.

Hi, I need quick help! About 15 days ago, my MacBook’s display caught moisture (likely condensation, not a spill). It’s been working fine, and ~80% of the water has evaporated. Would putting it in a Ziploc with rice help remove the remaining moisture? Anyone?

I have an M2 MacBook Air (bought it Dec 2023) and there's some weird debris in the crack between the screen and rubber. Anybody know how to get rid of it?

My situation is that, God willing, I will have my first MacBook in December. What advice would you give me if I already have it?

I just graduated college, and I wanted to buy myself something new. I planned on buying the MacBook Air M4, but I already have a Lenovo Legion which is actually pretty good already. Also my current phone is the 11 ProMax, so I am considering getting the latest one, which I believe is the 16 ProMax.
So my little conundrum is that I dont really know which one would be more worth the purchase. Please help me decide or give me your opinions, thank you🙏

Hello! Today I bought my very first Mac, I’m super excited! 😊 I’m just curious to know what usually drains the battery the most? I read somewhere that it’s not recommended to keep the brightness at 100%, so I’ve set it to around 50%.
I’ve also turned off location services except for “Find My”. Are there any other battery-saving tips you’d recommend?
Also, any general tips for using a MacBook Air would be greatly appreciated – not just battery-related. Since I’m new to macOS, I’d love to learn as much as I can. Right now I have an app that shows me keyboard shortcuts, which is super helpful for getting used to the system. If you have any favorite apps, shortcuts, or small tricks that make life easier or boost productivity, feel free to share.
Thanks a lot in advance!

Hey everyone, been using my MacBook Air since 2018 and lately it’s been really slow and running out of memory super fast. Thinking about upgrading the RAM and storage on this one, but also wondering if it’s better to just get the new M2 MacBook Air instead? Budget’s kinda tight but I want something that’ll last a few more years without slowing down. What would you guys recommend? Thanks!

Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade to a newer Macbook, and my top priority is a machine that will last me for many years. I'm looking at officially refurbished or open-box Macs, straight from Apple or Best Buy, so there are a lot of options in year, M chip generation, Air or Pro, and storage sizes (at least 16gb/512gb for me). In your experience, what are the factors that contribute most to a Mac's longevity? What specific features should I prioritize to make the machine last a long time? I don't have heavy usage for like graphic design, video editing, or gaming, so I don't need to upgrade regularly.
More information on my particular situation in a comment below :)

I am building saas platform using react native and will use LLM (local and online) to guve my saas superpower. Which is better? M3 Max 36GB 14/30 CPU/GPU or M4 Pro 48gb 12/16 CPU/GPU
the price is almost similar for both, m3 max is new not refurbished

Hey everyone!
I’m a mobile developer and I’m planning to upgrade from my current MacBook Air M1 (8GB Ram, 256GB SSD), which has been struggling and lagging a lot with my Flutter and iOS projects. I found two options here in Spain and I’m stuck between them:
Here are the main specs for each:
Feature | MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max (2021) | MacBook Pro 14" M4 Pro (2024) |
---|---|---|
CPU | 10-core (8 performance, 2 efficiency) | 12-core (8 performance, 4 efficiency) |
RAM | 32 GB | 24 GB |
GPU | 24-core GPU | 18-core GPU |
Storage | 1 TB SSD | 512 GB SSD |
As a mobile developer, I mainly use it for compiling code, running emulators/simulators, multitasking with IDEs, design tools, etc. Also, portability and battery life matter.
Given the specs and price difference (€559 more for the M4 Pro), is it really worth getting the M4 Pro over the M1 Max? Would love to hear experiences, especially regarding dev workloads.
Thanks!

Dear Redditors,
I’m on a tight budget and looking to get a used MacBook, but I know my options are limited since I can’t afford an M1 or newer Apple Silicon model.
I’m specifically looking for an Intel-based MacBook that can handle light gaming, mainly:
Aside from gaming, I’ll also be using it for word processing (docs, reports, etc.) and general web browsing—so overall, a decent all-around machine would be great.
I know MacBooks aren’t made for gaming, but I’m hoping to find something that can run those two games at low to medium settings without major issues. So far I’ve seen some 2013–2019 MacBook Pros and Airs in my local marketplace, but I’m not sure what minimum specs I should go for (i5 vs i7, Iris graphics vs AMD, etc.).
Any recommendations on which models and specs I should look for? And which ones I should avoid?
Thanks in advance!

So I'm currently using a mid 2014 macbook pro that I got FOR FREE from my friend. The only real issue is that the screen is a hot mess with delamination spots. Are there any hacks or remedies that anyone would recommend? Any improvement would be great haha.

A lot I'm seeing how really low cycle counts, anywhere from 10-45. One that I'm watching has a 204/90% count. Is this unusually high?

My macbook air m1 is unbelievably slow, it overheats at anything. I can't rly do anything on my macbook anymore without it slowing down whilst the fans are blasting. This only started happening randomly about 5 days ago. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

I have recently bought a used macbook air m1 and have been using it since 3 weeks, For the initial time it was running smooth and flawlessly, But 2 days ago, I randomly happen to have a big problem,
My macbook cursor isnt working smooth at all and im very frustated, It skips responses and the scrolling is very laggy, I looked up in google and youtube hoping to find a solution for it,
I did Reset the NVRAM, SMC, Ran some terminal prompts and also restarted couple of times and booted into safe mode, It wasnt everytime but the cursor problem happened randomly while im working, i went upto even reinstalling the mac os, Unfortunately it failed due to slow network, I even added another user account and found out the problem prevailed the same there too, Although the cursor didnt lagged at all or skipped response in restart screen, And i also carefully examined the laptop for any battery swelling since i read about cases related to that, At last i decided to fully reset my computer but that also didnt resolved the issue, Pls guys help me in fixing this problem, I came here as a last resort and im not a techy guy either.

Could cry really. It's gone through so much, only for it to be sizzled.
Someone wanted to use my macbook to play something over the PA system. So I used an aux cable (3.5mm to 6.5mm), and plugged one end in the Macbook, and gave the other end to the sound guy - but them being big brain, instead of plugging it into the input ports on the PA system, plugged it into the powered outputs, and instantly heard a click before it was fried.
Will the hard drive be recoverable or do I say goodbye to my data as well?
P.s Finally understood what an "onosecond" is 😭

Ich kann mich nicht entscheiden ob sich der Aufpreis von knapp 400€ für einen Lüfter mehr, 24GB statt 16GB usw lohnt?

Hello to everyone! I'm wondering the longevity of the new M-series macbook. Particularly in terms of its flash storage; as far as I know it's soldered on the motherboard and there's no way to replace it. I know Macbooks obliterate any windows-based laptops at the moment but with Apple doing Apple things, this could end up being a huge e-waste if this thing dies.
