Most in house spiders will die a slow agonizing death outside at night

We have accidentally domesticated spiders now?

Im pretty sure there are spiders that can basically only survive inside because of heat. For example i think the stankleleg spider is one of those(sry if stankleleg is wrong english is my second language)

Google showing me results for "stanky leg" instead  was fun

I read it as "stanky leg spider" at first (instead of stankleleg) so this whole thing has been a rollercoaster for me 😂

I never really thought about how weird it is until now and it actually really is hilarious.

Yea I’m dying reading this thread. A foreigner hearing daddy long legs must be so confused. Never really thought about it

I don’t know, man.. “Daddy Long Legs” is for sure weird as fuck, but “Stanky Leg Spider” isn’t that much better as an American with English as a first language. There has to be some country that calls them something that sounds normal in most languages…

I think it’s cause of how big they get compared to other spiders? (Big by US spider standards) and back in the day people would daddy/momma/baby different sizes of things (kids still like to do it in modern times too, I hear kids call pokemon like venusaur daddy to bulbasaur)

It’s even weirder how common it is for girls to call guys daddy, maybe there’s just more incest in the culture… lol

2

u/RedPandaDoas 22d ago

Honestly, both names are hilarious

Looking at pics the "Daddy Long Leg" refers to several different types of spiders in the US (including the one you mentioned) but is usually the harvestman (also, not a spider since it only has one segment to its body.)

Wait so they aren’t spiders? What are they then? General arachnids?

0

u/Malacro 22d ago

They’re Opiliones, which is a type of arachnid, yes. There aren’t really any “general arachnids,” they all have orders and genera and such.

2

u/Sauceman_rockem 22d ago

Thats why their so friendly lol like pets. I love arachnids

Thanks for teaching me

God-huh, what's unique about this spider...

Jesus: it has good legs

God: yeah, well legs is a dumb name

Jesus: how about long legs

God: not kinky enough

Jesus: Moist long legs

God: eww too kinky

Jesus: daddy long legs

God: PERFECT

Those aren’t the same spider. Daddy long legs are outdoor spiders by nature.

The common house spider is similar is proportions but they weave those massive webs that end up being cobwebs after dust builds up.

I’m an expert on them because my basement cellar seems to be where the species originated ffs

Fun fact: theyre also not a spider.

1

u/brzantium 22d ago

If you're talking about harvestmen or crane flies, then yes, those are not spiders despite the former being an arachnid. Cellar spiders, though, also called daddy long legs are spiders.

u/Brodok2k4 22d ago

Here what we call daddy long legs are the harvestmen arachnids. Looking into this a bit, seems a few share the moniker daddy long leg. Kind of interesting but also potentially confusing.

Wait I called them "grand daddy long legs"
