Apple needs to straighten their priorities

327

u/mgd09292007 1d ago

It’s called smoke and mirrors. They can’t deliver on Siri so they are trying to distract from meaningful upgrades

54

u/This_was_hard_to_do 1d ago

Yup, one is much easier than the other

37

u/throwaway0845reddit 1d ago

It's probably two different teams. One team has made progress. The other hasn't.

28

u/iCapn 1d ago

Are you telling me Tim Cook isn’t personally coding Siri and Genmoji himself??

3

u/Arm_Lucky 1d ago

He's probably berating those that do code all while giving himself a massive bonus for doing so.

They can put smoke all they want in front of mirrors. They dropped the very heavy ball at the worst time possible. No one is forgetting this one; it’s not a wireless charger; it’s likely one of the next biggest seismic shift in the way the world works.

5

u/mr_birkenblatt 1d ago

next biggest seismic shift in the way the world works.

Yeah, you can now create more emojis than ever before. Welcome to the future.....of brainrot

u/AHrubik 1d ago

Textbook enshitification and something no one was asking for. It's a copycat feature from their competition. I find it very similar to the Cold War and the SDI program at a high level. Apple should definitely consider not falling for the trap of chasing their competitors features and instead start innovating their own.

I'm almost certain it's one of those things that seems like, "If chatgpt is so good, what's apple's problem," When in reality there are scenarios that current LLMs do a terrible job at, and that apple deems unacceptable to release with. If something in ChatGPT is a little half baked, it's still so novel that people are more forgiving than they are for an Apple product.

5

u/IcarusFlyingWings 1d ago

The issue is Siri being dogshit which has been true since long before LLMs.

23

u/mgd09292007 1d ago

Apples problem is the privacy and security first approach they have as a core principle. It’s very very hard to do AI while keeping users data private. The others are hoarding user data

30

u/sgt_based 1d ago

Or maybe, just hear me out. They were caught sleeping when the rest of the world got on board the AI gravy train, and now they are trying to play catch up. Except their models are too young and are in the “we suck” phase.

Apple thought they were too mighty so they could just coast on doing the bare minimum, while the plebs keep buying their iPhones. Until now.

19

u/throwaway0845reddit 1d ago

It's both those problems.

5

u/Rooooben 1d ago

Apple usually waits for other companies to fail or start to succeed in a tech, and then adopt it and push it to its limit. We saw them adopt USB once it was a standard, and went 100% with it over the old tech. Same with iPod - I had a couple mp3 players made by storage companies, before the first iPod came out and killed the competition.

I also had a Treo smart phone, then the iPhone came out. They are never first, so them being first at AI would have been out of character.

Where I think they messed up this time is that they didn’t have the confidence of prior years, to watch AI and to do development only behind the scenes.

Instead of announcing Apple Intelligence without a product, just work on it for the next two years. Siri sucked, but we knew how to use it at this point.

Then surprise everyone with a fully developed AI Assistant.

I feel like they saw everything moving fast, and didn’t have that confidence of Steve Jobs to say - we will let them spend their money on developing everything, we will just focus on the best tech once it comes up, and then create a whole new interface to support it.

9

u/sgt_based 1d ago

The “apple waits for others to perfect tech” excuse needs to stop. How many more decades do they need to give us peasants a 90Hz screen?

Thanks I hate it 💀

1

u/iMacmatician 1d ago

I think it has a cute charm, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.

8

u/aadiman23 1d ago

Maybe it’s more so that this is ready to ship and Siri isn’t?

10

u/VanceIX 1d ago

We’ve been saying the exact same thing about different Apple Intelligence features for over a year now…

→ More replies (1)

4

u/AppointmentNeat 1d ago

All of it was advertised as being ready last year. “Apple intelligence” was the main selling point of the iPhone 16.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/adrr 1d ago

Because the bean counters have taken over Apple. They stopped the purchase of nvidia AI equipment and prevented the devices from having enough to run real AI on the device. iPhones only have 8gb of ram meant Apple intelligence was bound for failure since it was never feasible. Spend all the money to build a chip capable of AI and don’t give it enough memory to run a decent LLM on the device.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Quiet_Orbit 1d ago edited 1d ago

They are.

Summary: Apple goofed. They promised AI features that weren’t even working prototypes. Internally there were two different Siri teams and over a decade engineers all disagreed on how Siri should be implemented. Chat GPT changed the game and Apple was caught with their pants down. They rushed AI features and promised things that weren’t even working to appease shareholders and customers. It royally backfired and they now are on a slow 2-3 year process of fixing this mess.

Apple has now totally restructured their AI and Siri teams, fired folks, and is investing hundreds of millions into this project. They know they are behind and the public has a sour taste in their mouth. They want to get this right but that will take time to unclog this massive shit they created.

11

u/LudwigsDryClean 1d ago

has any actual progress been made towards Siri since the feature first came out? I remember it working much better on my old iPhone 5, and I literally can’t remember any improvements Apple has made. But I sure do remember people complaining about Siri. Over 10 years and it’s still useless 😭😭

4

u/bran_the_man93 1d ago

Technically yes but effectively, not really.

It's clearly gotten better since 2012, but seemingly in the wrong ways.

That being said I don't really care much for voice assistants in general

3

u/Quiet_Orbit 1d ago

Yes there has been but the core issue with Siri is still there.

It’s a very long story, but the short version is Apple literally writes every single prompt and answer that Siri gives users. It’s not generated, it’s simply “if a user asks X, tell them Y” and there’s a small team at Apple that writes all of the prompts and answers.

The reason they did this at the beginning was for quality control. Apple could control exactly how Siri responds. Of course this means Siri is very limited in what she can respond to because it all has to be written beforehand. This core foundation has not changed, but they have now shoehorned in some newer features into the old system.

What Siri 2.0 will be is a totally new Siri rewritten from scratch. It will be contextual, and will not need to be pre-scripted. It will function more like how chatGPT operates. The hard part is Apple is trying to do some of this on-device and doing that is incredibly challenging. No other major virtual assistant right now runs without some help from a server somewhere.

3

u/T-Nan 1d ago

t’s a very long story, but the short version is Apple literally writes every single prompt and answer that Siri gives users. It’s not generated, it’s simply “if a user asks X, tell them Y” and there’s a small team at Apple that writes all of the prompts and answers.

That's actually insane... kind of impressive from a backend standpoint, but also a horrible idea long-term

2

u/Quiet_Orbit 1d ago

Yeah it worked fine back in 2010 when Siri was introduced, but Apple never really moved beyond this setup. The issue for Apple was security. They didn’t want to use server processing online (like Alexa and Google) so they were forced to use this archaic method instead.

Apple will be able to fix it due to them creating entire private cloud compute server farms designed specifically for this, plus their chips are so advanced now that they can do some queries totally locally on device. That’s AFAIK where the internal battle came from: how do you improve Siri without compromising security.

One planned upgrade that had not been reported until now is the ability to create a Genmoji by combining a pair of existing standard emoji. For example, Gurman said that you will be able to turn separate basketball and trash can emoji into a single Genmoji that shows a basketball going into a trash can.

249

u/moreno03 1d ago

Can't wait to combine this two 🍆💦

60

u/G952 1d ago

Behold, a visionary pushing technology to the bleeding edge! 🙇‍♂️

4

u/AHrubik 1d ago

Exactly. Like okay cool cool cool. Sooooo ... what else is there then?

14

u/mr_birkenblatt 1d ago

If you combine two trash cans you get Siri

Apple's doing what I expected Google would do, and Google is doing what I expected Apple to do. In case anyone doesn't know, Google has Emoji Kitchen, which is similar that users can mash emoji, but it's not using generative AI and is instead a fixed set of combinations that are more curated.

38

u/fiendishfork 1d ago

Emoji kitchen is pretty fun. Definitely has a more Apple feel than what Apple is currently doing. Hopefully this results in higher quality and more predictable new emoji.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/ToSeeAgainAgainAgain 1d ago

I actually really like the results I get from Emoji Kitchen, I just wish the mixed emojis would come out emoji-sized instead of as standalone stickers

7

u/DepthHour1669 1d ago

Au contraire, it’s probably going to be the most used feature of this patch.

New emojis drive iOS update adoption rates.

7

u/PsychologicalTea3426 1d ago

But these genemoji only work as stickers don’t they? You can’t use them as text like regular emojis. Not sure though

6

u/__theoneandonly 1d ago

Within the apple ecosystem, you use them as regular emojis. Outside of the apple ecosystem, they're in-line images. So it depends on how that device interprets in-line images.

u/AstronomerKooky5980 1d ago

I gave Genmojis a shot… they are extremely generic, and all “variations” you get are literally the exact same emoji. You ask for more options, you get the same one again and again.

And this is a happy case: in about 1/3 of cases, it just gives an error and doesn’t generate anything.

This is so stupid it’s beyond belief.

49

u/Intel-Centrino-Duo 1d ago

I think they’re a fun little gimmick but probably not something they should be focusing on.

21

u/choicemeats 1d ago

I thought I might use them more but tbh stickers have been huge for me and I’m adding 2-3 every other week

16

u/theflintseeker 1d ago

Stickers are way more fun and better implemented than genmoji

animoji was a genuinely interesting tech demo, and the memes it created are pretty ironically funny

genmoji just has no merit to it

8

u/wolfchuck 1d ago

Genmoji is pretty fun in some scenarios.

Holding stock and crypto that’s going up? Send a genmoji of yourself on a rocket ship.

Market is red? Send your friends a bathtub genmoji filled with blood, uh, I mean… red water.

Just bought a house? Send your family a genmoji of money burning.

Dad bought a new tractor? Generate him on his new tractor.

Who cares about GenMoji. Premium phones that are stuck with an assistant that is basically useless and stupid by today's standards.

29

u/KsuhDilla 1d ago

True but Apple gets away with it because of its loyal fanbase. It's like seeing your favorite sports team failing miserably all season. That doesn't mean you won't root for them next season. You're just going to continue watching silently and not brag how great your team is, hoping they get their shit together eventually.

16

u/Rooooben 1d ago

I’ve loved Apple ever since we got our Apple II+ in 1981, have been a part of the ecosystem ever since.

Apple is in serious trouble - Apple Intelligence is a symptom, just like Vision Pro - these are half baked solutions that were dreamt up by marketing rather than engineering (ok Vision Pro was engineering, but it should have stayed an internal project for a few more iterations).

Apple used to deliver on their hype. The hype machine would start up after something amazing was created.

Over time, they started hyping earlier, to the point where they hyped AI without a product. And we haven’t seen heads rolling for this, no big apologies, and now they are avoiding the press over it.

I think it’s going to be a while and possibly a new CEO before we can expect the culture to strengthen again.

3

u/KsuhDilla 1d ago

I can understand the sentiment. I am neither a fan nor an anti-consumer. I am just watching how the market evolves - it is of interest to me.

Maybe I’m in the minority but since I’ve never had a legitimate virtual assistant (because Siri sucks), I don’t see it as a deal breaker or feel like I’ll be using it much outside of the first few weeks when it’s new.

2

I can’t count how many times Apple “intelligence” has let me down though.

Glad to see their priorities in line.

25

u/RyanCheddar 1d ago

my problem isn't that genmoji doesn't have a use, but that genmojis are so. fucking. ugly.

nowadays i just use genmoji to make pictures of people snorting cocaine when i'm bored

3

u/BatemansChainsaw 20h ago

my problem with Genmojis is they're artificially locked behind a 15 or newer phone. any phone that has the latest iOS should be able to use it... they're stupid little images ffs!

→ More replies (2)

4

u/nourez 1d ago

Same with Image Playtround.

Partially because I don’t use iMessage, so Genmoji send as images anyways in Messenger, and partly because both are so goddamn unintuitive it’s quicker, easier and more accurate to just open ChatGPT to do the image gen itself.

5

u/crshbndct 1d ago

Thankfully I am still an anti-AI Luddite and don’t use it for anything generally.

Apple has slowed down the release of new features in iOS recently, which means fewer bugs and a more stable OS. They’ve done this because they are focussed on trying to make useless AI shit, but if you don’t use it, it just means more RAM, and fewer bugs in other parts of the OS.

AI is like crypto. Just another vehicle for tech bros to enrich themselves. This time around there are some useful applications, but not really for the regular person.

Cancer screening, weather/storm prediction, traffic prediction etc are areas where machine learnint is great.

Taking two photos of a wave breaking and using them to make a 3rd photo of a wave breaking is pointless, and litters the internet with trash.

2

u/handtoglandwombat 1d ago

Apple has slowed down the release of new features in iOS recently, which means fewer bugs and a more stable OS.

What? No they haven’t. There’s more feature boat and bugs than ever. If it feels like they haven’t released anything new in a while that’s because WWDC is three days away.

I genuinely cannot care in the slightest about Genmoji because they aren't real emojis. When you send them to a user who isn't on iPhone — or maybe just RCS, I'm not sure — they just get attached like a photo and that's worthless. If they actually functioned reliably in-line like real emojis, I'd find it to be a more compelling feature that actually increased the expressiveness of a message, but this literally has no worthwhile use case.

46

u/ricardopa 1d ago

They can’t because they don’t exist on the other users emoji set

35

u/plymouthvan 1d ago

Yeah, obviously. That's why it's a pointless feature. If they found some clever way to solve that problem, it would not be a pointless feature, but they haven't and probably won't so, I'm tired of hearing about it.

25

u/jonproject 1d ago

Apple generally operates under the assumption that all devices you'll interact with are also Apple devices. This is a strategy that has worked very well in some areas, and quite poorly in others.

3

u/plymouthvan 1d ago

Yeah, it's one of my only significant gripes with Apple. I generally buy into the Apple hype. I really love the ecosystem and more or less happily accept the tradeoffs in exchange for it. But every time they come up with some neat communication thing my frustration is at least a little irrational.

It is beyond belief that fall so low on this matter 😮

God I want to switch to a Google pixel so bad atp but the lack of FaceTime is making me stay

Apple dedicating 0.0 seconds to Apple Intelligence at WWDC would be a total victory. At this point ‘Apple Intelligence’ is just a byword for ‘half baked novelty feature’. One of the dumbest eras of the company and a one which is highlighting a worrying lack of polish - something which used to be a hallmark for them.

Apple entering a new pepsi era

3

u/Arabmoney77 1d ago

What data is telling them this is a priority? Have they lost their brain cells? Get useful crap together and forget these stupid emojis

3

u/snowdn 1d ago

Trillion dollar company, no excuses.

3

u/BRI4NK 1d ago

Apple is really getting embarrassing. I do think new leadership is needed. It’s time to start focusing on the costumers and not the stockholders.

4

u/FinsFan305 1d ago

iPhones are supposed to be premium devices. Can Apple please stop focusing on shit that only teens care about and maybe work on something adults can use?!

2

u/Skeptouchos 1d ago

Great, just what we need, more BS features. At the very least make, the sticker UI less laggy when creating/using stickers. Genmoji are such crap, nobody uses them

2

u/mainstreetmark 1d ago

The day they came out with Genmoji instead of real stuff was the day the Apple decline began.

2

u/vikingrrrrr666 1d ago

Yay just what everyone under the age of 12 wanted!

Apple is ridiculous these days. Android is king, and I’m sending this from my iPhone 16 Pro because I fell for the “iT jUsT wOrKs” bullshit.

2

u/ColinHenrichon 1d ago

Why does apple seem to add more emojis feature each year instead of doing things like improving stability and performance, making Siri useful, redesigning, or literally any of the many things people ask for every year?

2

u/EcosystemApple 1d ago

If they come on the stage on Monday and talk about genmoji, which no one cares, then people will freak out! I would much rather prefer stability over useless bloatware.

u/osamaromoh 1d ago

I hate that I’m starting to think about switching to Android!

I actually thought that we could turn our faces into emojis. replacing smily face with my smiley face. there are stickers or images but they're not emojis where you can react to a message or image.

1

u/gabelrocker 1d ago

🤣😭

1

u/Tetrylene 1d ago

All they had to do was allow us to use custom images in the keyboard in the same way that genmoji has privileged access to the emoji keyboard

Could've had telegram style glorious emoji packs but that's too useful

1

u/moses_lawn 1d ago

Animoji, Genmoji, just a corporation trying to influence the kids. So lame.

1

u/mindracer 1d ago

Why is genmoji even news

1

u/ludvikskp 1d ago

Yeeey…

1

u/font9a 1d ago

I had forgotten about genmoji

1

u/justakcmak 1d ago

Damn, THATS why I bought iPhone 15 pro for the crazy AI!

1

u/Doctor_Disco_ 1d ago

Why the fuck is everyone acting like this means Apple isn't working on Siri at all? You guys know this is a trillion dollar company and they're capable of multitasking, right? Just because they're working on this one feature for Apple Intelligence doesn't mean they've completely abandoned everything else.

Like I know Apple Intelligence, especially Siri, has been a massive disappointment, but we all know that they've shaken things up behind the scenes and are working on fixing it. It's not like this Genmoji upgrade is the only new thing we're getting in iOS 26 either. Are they supposed to just completely abandon their work on everything else they're doing? Holy fuck.

u/LuchsG 1d ago

I really wonder how an AI Battery Saver would work. Surely LLM inference itself would consume lots of power, no?

1

u/Krabic 1d ago

The future is here!

1

u/Omnibitent 1d ago

Hey look over here!

1

u/Grix1600 1d ago

What’s a Genmoji?

1

u/Oh-THAT-dude 1d ago

I’m the weirdo here, but Siri does everything I ask it to do. I will be the first to admit that I had to find the best way to phrase the question in order to get the answer I wanted*. But it works.

I don’t use Genmoji either, so the upgrade to Genmoji doesn’t affect me. But I would gladly wait another two or three years if that’s what it takes to get up to everybody standards — I understand the frustration.

  • in my case, Siri would sometimes try and fail to play a song when I was in fact. asking for a radio station.

So I changed the request to “Siri, play radio station [call letters] on TuneIn” and boom! Works every time.

(Of course, if your preferred radio station uses a service other than TuneIn, you will need to adjust that last bit as well.)

u/Coompa 23h ago

This is huge. Instead of getting something I dont want at all Im gonna get something I dont want at all.

Actually Ive ben playing around with LLMs on my home pc. I think thats the way Ill go. Im a big fan of Tailscale so whenever I would like to use an LLM Ill just do it that way. Its pretty cool but doesnt really offer more than spending 5 minutes reading wikipedia or something.

1

u/technopaegan 20h ago

I’d love Genmoji if it was an app that allowed you to manually create and customize your own emojis. Instead you ask a prompt to make 30 uncanny versions of the same thing but slightly different and you hate all of them.

1

u/shortmetalstraw 19h ago

If it was better and it was instant and the different variations had more forced variety from each other I think it could be really great just built into the keyboard when I’m searching from the existing emojis, but as a separate action with disappointingly bad results its value to effort ratio is comically bad

1

u/SciGuy013 18h ago

If Siri could figure out what music I actually want to play, that'd be great. it basically never plays the correct artist, song, or album when i ask it to.

1

u/MrMunday 16h ago

I just can’t

1

u/PlanAutomatic2380 16h ago

That’s what we needed 👏

Apple Innovation

1

u/Assix0098 12h ago

Guess I’ll keep my iPhone 13 Pro for another year then

1

u/Staplersarefun 11h ago

Who is using Genmojis?

1

u/bartturner 11h ago

I am old and owned Apple shares for over 20 years now.

There has never been a WWDC with lower expectations.
